Weekend Recap 11/15

Gentlemen’s Bet gets put up via DQ in the DeFrancis Dash

Trouble Kid went gate to wire in the $350,000 DeFrancis Dash on Saturday but was disqualified after the stewards ruled he caused interference in the run down the backstretch. Sent off at odds of 5/2, Trouble Kid ( 3rd Selection) went right to the front as expected. He crowded his rivals near the half mile pole and while he cruised around the oval to a three quarter length win, that win was taken away. Trouble Kid was placed second behind Gentlemen’s Bet who originally finished second and was impacted by the interference. Race favorite Palace ( Top Selection) could only manage a third place finish.

Hot City Girl ( Top Selection) went wire to wire to take home the Safely Kept Stakes. Sent off as the huge 1/2 favorite, Hot City Girl was able to get an opening quarter in a very reasonable 23 seconds with only mild pressure. Cornelio Velasquez let Hot City Girl go at the top of the lane and she poured it on, winning by almost nine lengths in the end. Stroke Play rallied from the back of the pack to get up for second while Paulassilverlining ran third. Awesome Speed lived up to his name as he won a hard fought battle on the lead with pressure from favorite King Kranz ( Top Selection) early on. But Awesome Speed disposed of King Kranz in the final yards and held off a late charge from Never Gone South ( 2nd Selection) who got up for second.

El Kabeir ( 3rd Selection) was able to get up in the final yards to beat the longest shot on the board Roxbury N Ovation ( Top Selection) to win the City of Laurel Stakes. El Kabeir rallied from fifth early on to get up in the final jump and top a $45 exacta. Page McKenney turned in another big performance as he took home the Richard Small Stakes in impressive fashion. Sent off at odds of 4/5, Page McKenney ( Top Selection) stalked long shot Service For Ten early on and took command on the turn and pulled away to score by almost five lengths over Strong Stipulation who ran second. Lost Raven ( Top Selection) easily took home the win in the Smart Halo Stakes, besting Twirl Girl ( Longshot) by three lengths.

Mr. Maybe from last to first in the Red Smith

Mr. Maybe was last on the final turn, but first when it mattered as he turned in a huge move to win the $250,000 Red Smith Handicap. Sent off as the 2/1 favorite, Mr. Maybe and Irad Ortiz were last early on but only four lengths off early leader War Dancer as the pack of eight was tightly grouped. Ortiz and Mr. Maybe started their rally five wide at the top of the lane and blew past all their rivals in a flash and poured it on late to win by four and a quarter lengths. Kaigun ( 2nd Selection) rallied to get up into second just ahead of Holiday Star ( 3rd Selection) who was third.

Isabella Sings lit up the tote board as she went wire to wire in the $200,000 Mrs. Revere Stakes. Sent off at odds of 27/1, Isabella Sings and Paco Lopez spurted out to the early lead and opened up a two length lead down the backstretch going through a half mile in 48.07 seconds. They came into the stretch and Isabella Sings opened it up to two and a half lengths at the eighth pole. Fellow long shot Rainha Da Bateria burst out of the pack and flew late to make it close, but Isabella Sings held on by half a length to get the win and top a $1,799 exacta. Devine Aida ( 3rd Selection) closed late and finished up in third to complete a $19,029 trifecta.
