Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet headlines Los Alamitos Saturday card

The Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet for two year old fillies will top a Saturday card of racing from Los Alamitos. Take Charge Brandi enters the race with two very impressive wins in a row. First the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and then the Grade 3 Delta Princess at Delta Downs last time out. She figures to be one of the favorites in here and if she’s able to relax on the lead, she seems as they she’s figured the game out and could put up another big run. Her main competition could be Feathered. Feathered finished fourth behind Take Charge Brandi in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but was trying to close on a track that was very kind to speed early in the card. Feathered was also third in the Grade 1 Frizette and returned to Belmont to train up to the Starlet where she’ll fly in for the race. Mike Smith will take over the mount on Feathered for the first time.

The question for Take Charge Brandi seems to be whether or not anyone will go with her early on. Maybelline has some speed and is stretching out from a seven furlong stakes at Del Mar that saw her run second. Don’t Blame Me has shown speed on the main track and could be prominent early on as well. She took far back in her last start, a turf event, but her last three main track tries had her on the lead at the first two calls. The addition of Tyler Baze could also be telling as Tyler likes to get horses up on the lead.

The Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet is carded as the 8th race at Los Alamitos Race Course on Saturday afternoon and post time is 7:00pm EST for the race.

Another Saturday with huge fields at Gulfstream Park

Gulfstream Park began the winter/spring Championship Meet last week and the fields were overflowing. The South Florida track is back at it again this Saturday with big fields and four stakes events on the program. The Grade 3 Sugar Swirl drew only six runners but is an evenly matched affair. Merry Meadow is a Grade 3 winner and comes into this race off a big win sprinting last time out at Gulfstream Park West. She has never run at Gulfstream Park though and sometimes it’s a surface some horses don’t take well too and some thrive on. Ol Donyo could be one of those horses who thrives on the Gulfstream track as she’s 2 for 2 over it, including a stakes win. Ol Donyo is trained by South Florida kingpin Marty Wolfson and has a good record at the distance. She also picks up the services of Joel Rosario.

The other three $100,000 stakes events make up the final three races on the card, starting with the El Prado Stakes on the grass. Grade 2 winner Excaper drew the rail and one has to think that will mean he’s sending out to the lead. Mshawish figures to get some attention because of his top notch connections and the fact that he’s coming off a third place finish in a Grade 3 at Saratoga. An up and comer could be Midnight Cello who has had a strong 2014 and just missed in a stakes last time out at Gulfstream Park West.

Pants on Fire leads the charge in the Harlan’s Holiday Stakes as the millionaire takes on a talented cast including Liam’s Map. Liam’s Map has won two of his three career starts and both wins have been absolutely monster performances with huge speed figures. This race will be the acid test for him as he faces a classy field of graded stakes runners. Sassy Kitten will take a class drop and be one of the choices in the South Beach Stakes. She won a pair of stakes two and three starts back before running eighth in the Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland. The return to listed stakes action should benefit her in this spot. Tokyo Time was fifth as the favorite last time out in the Grade 3 Noble Damsel and she too should appreciate the class drop.

Saturday is Louisiana Champions Day at Fair Grounds

Fair Grounds is celebrating the Louisiana bred on Saturday with the annual Louisiana Champions Day card. Ten added money events will be run with the $150,000 Classic going off as race 4. Sunbean has been crushing his Louisiana-bred competition and figures to once again be a strong favorite. His main competition could be One King’s Men who won nicely first off the claim for Joe Sharp last time out. Heitai will lead the charge in the Champions Day Sprint. He’s been a win machine with 11 victories from 24 career starts, but he’s 3 for 8 at Fair Grounds so maybe it’s not his favorite surface with the very long stretch. Too Dim caught Heitai last time out and figures to be closing late. He loves Fair Grounds and is 5 for 7 over the course.

Vivian Da Bling will try state-bred action for the first time after faring well in open stakes company. She did get beat pretty badly last time though in the Delta Princess so the class drop should wake her back up. String King figures to get much of the attention in the Turf as he’s won 10 of 23 on the grass in his career. He likes the Fair Grounds course and should be prominent throughout the race. Our Quista has shown freaky ability in her six starts with three wins including a huge score in the El Raspberry Stakes last time out at Louisiana Downs.

The action from Fair Grounds gets underway at 1:00pm with three quarter horse stakes and twelve races in total.
