Weekend Stakes Preview 5/29

Penn Mile headlines huge Saturday night at Penn National

The $500,000 Penn Mile headlines a huge night of racing at Penn National on Saturday night that gets underway at 6:05pm EST.  The four big races are carded as the first four races on the card, so the action will come early and often, with the Penn Mile carded as race 4.  Bobby’s Kitten is the 8/5 morning line favorite and is looking to rebound after a disastrous twelfth place finish in the Grade 1 Bluegrass Stakes.  Bobby’s Kitten will now return to the turf, a surface he has three wins in five career starts.  He’s been best when on the early lead, however he could have some serious early pace competitors.  Storming Inti likes to go to the front as well and last time out was on the engine before getting caught late in the Grade 2 American Turf on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs.  Alan Garcia will ride Storming Inti for trainer Chad Brown, who also trains Bobby’s Kitten.  So you have to think Brown will have one of his horses take back off the pace.  If the pace does get hot early on it could be Global View who benefits the most.  He’s coming off a spectacular win in the Grade 2 American Turf and he’s 3 for 4 in his career over the lawn.  Gary Stevens will be on board and he was on board for the win in the American Turf.

The headliner on the undercard is the $200,000 Mountainview Handicap for the older males on the main track.  Last Gunfighter is the morning-line favorite coming off his win in the Grade 2 Hawthorne Gold Cup last fall.  He hasn’t been seen since that November win, but has been working well in the mornings for trainer Chad Brown.  Taptowne drew right to the outside of Last Gunfighter and was just a very game second in the Texas Mile at Lone Star Park behind Grand Contender, who came back to win the Lone Star Park Handicap on Monday.  Golden Ticket often seems to run a big race but does seem to enjoy settling more for minor awards than the big money.

Twelve runners will go in the $150,000 Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup which is a five furlong turf sprint that features defending champion Tightend Touchdown.  Tightend Touchdown was sensational winning this race last year by five lengths and even was second in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.  The race even features last year’s Jenny Wade winner at Penn National, Sensible Lady.  The $100,000 Penn Oaks is on the grass at a mile and features another Chad Brown monster, this time in the form of Grade 2 winner Ready To Act.  Ready To Act won the Grade 2 Beaumont at Keeneland over the synthetic, but she does own two wins on the grass. Grade 1 American Oaks headlines huge Saturday Stakes double at Santa Anita

The $350,000 Grade 1 American Oaks will make it’s debut at Santa Anita on Saturday as the mile and one quarter race drew 8 rivals.  Nashoba’s Gold has been leading the charge in Southern California as she has consecutive wins in the Grade 3 Providencia and the Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap in her last two starts.  Her lone defeat in four starts was to Diversy Harbor, who is also entered in the American Oaks.  Both Nashoba’s Key and Diversy Harbor like to come rallying from off the pace and the pace in this race could be suspect.  Probably long shots Kissin Lucky Lips and Tiz The Key are the only two who have shown much early speed, so look for Diversy Harbor to possibly be closer up early on and maybe get first run on the come from behinders.  One of the key players rolling from off the pace could be Grade 1 winner Room Service.  Room Service dead heated for the win with Rosalind in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes last time out and is also a Grade 3 winner on the grass already in her career.

The Grade 2 Californian is the other stakes event on the card and is a prep for the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita.  Fury Kapkori comes into this race with three straight wins, including a huge five length score in the Grade 3 Precisionist Stakes last time out.  Bob Baffert will send out Sky Kingdom in the Californian who is coming off a 9 month layoff.  Sky Kingdom has a good record at Santa Anita and Baffert is strong off the long layoff, so this horse could be a contender at a price. Selections for the American Oaks

  1. Diversy Harbor
  2. Room Service
  3. Nashoba’s Gold

Friday night is Molson Pace Night at Western Fair

This year’s $150,000 Molson Pace will be run at Western Fair on Friday night and a great field of eight has assembled for the historic race.  Foiled Again, the ten year old super horse has drawn the seven hole for Yannick Gingras and will be looking for his 81st career win.  He’ll have to contend with PH Supercam who beat him last time they faced off, in the $567,000 Levy Final at Yonkers Raceway.  State Treasurer drew the rail position and ships in from Mohawk/Woodbine where he’s been dominating the preferred Male Paces in recent weeks.  Captive Audience has been behind State Treasurer in the last two open paces they squared off in, however he seems to be at his best with the early lead and if he can blast out early on the half mile track, he could be dangerous.

The Molson Pace card gets underway at Western Fair at 7:05pm EST and features twelve races.  The $150,000 Molson Pace is the 12th race on the card. Selections for the Molson Pace

  1. PH Supercam
  2. Foiled Again
  3. State Treasurer

Delauney returns to Churchill Downs in the Aristides

Delauney has been a Churchill Downs specialist over the years and will look for his 5th win at the track in Saturday’s $100,000 Aristides Stakes.  Delauney is 4 for 5 at Churchill including a win in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes last year.  He has just one win since then and at age 7, the question is can he get back to his top form.  Jake Mo is coming off a third place finish at Churchill Downs and was behind Departing in that race.  The Bret Calhoun trainee has been firing strong races in his last five starts since coming to the Calhoun barn.  Scatman won this race last year and went to the bench after that win.  He came back to run fourth in the Turf sprint at Churchill last time out and trainer Eddie Kenneally is good second off the layoff. Selections for the Aristides

  1. Delauney
  2. Scatman
  3. Mico Margarita
