Losers report: Hoppertunity ran against Shared Belief and California Chrome in the San Antonio and predictably lost, but I think a lot of people were surprised that ‘Hopp’ lost to Shared Belief by eight lengths. Hopp better show more in his next start (probably the Santa Anita Handicap) or he’s out of the stable. It might not be coincidence the horse he beat in the Clark at Churchill Downs, Protonico, was eased in the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream this past weekend.
On a better note, Airfoil continues to battle in the Conditional allowance races on the Santa Anita circuit, just missing second in a N2x/$62,500 race going one mile on February 6th. Ideally I would like to see Airfoil in one turn-turn sprint races where his late kick might be put to better use.
What’s on tap:
Wisecracker, Far Right, Avenge, Yes for Success, Frosted, The Man, New Summit, Wabel and Bettys Bambino are all working well for their next starts, which should happen in the next two to three weeks. I am not sure if Frosted can win the Fountain of Youth stakes at Gulfstream, but I would consider the other horses pretty “live” in their next start.
Monsieur Power is interestingly spotted in a $50,000 claimer down the Santa Anita hillside turf course on February 12th (Race 8). This one ran really well sprinting on synthetic at Golden Gate on December 28th and I think this level could be a good spot for him.
P Club, who in his open company turf effort got blitzed by the stakes-nominated Metaboss, faces Cal-bred animals going 1 mile on the Santa Anita turf on February 13th (Race 5). These are the conditions when he ran second at a big price at Del Mar in November.
