Friday Night Australian Racing – 3/24/2015

I am having some computer problems today, so I will be very brief but try to make a case for my selections:

Race 1B (Randwick) – 10:40 PM EDT – 5 and 1/2 Furlongs (Open 2yo).  Picks (8-9)

“Open” 2yo races tend to be of high quality and often an unraced runner can win, even against horses that have already beaten maidens.  #8 Concubine (9/2 ML) has a very interesting pedigree, being inbred heavily to Nijinsky and Northern Dancer and all of Northern Dancer’s ancestors.  That kind of breeding would be frowned upon in North America, but it is a “power move” in Australian breeding.  Many, many successful runners are inbred three or four times into the same horse in the first five generations of an Aussie pedigree.  Works say yes and Gai Waterhouse is arguably the best trainer of two-year old race horses in Australia.  #9 Meteora Miss (20/1 ML) put up a strong number in a stakes race and gets a class drop here.

Race 2B (Randwick) – 11:15 PM EDT – 6 Furlongs (3yo BM75 – similar to N1x allowance).  Picks (1-2-5-4)

#1 Sarajevo (3/1 ML) will be a very short price but has put up a speed figure in a prior race that crushes this field.  Comes in with two barrier trials and the redoubtable James McDonald takes the riding assignment.  #2 Confederate (20/1 ML) gets class relief after running into top sprinters Delectation and Bring Me The Maid in a Group 2.  #5 Better Not Blue and #4 Palazzo Pubblico are solid animals in a race where there does not appear to be a lot of quality.
