Del Mar – Breeders’ Cup

Race #5 – The BC Turf Sprint – 5f on the turf – 3:40 pm

BetPTC.com Analysis / #4- Lieutenant Dan / #1 – Glass Slippers / #2 – Emaraaty Ana

#4 Lieutenant Dan is a stalker who is 2 for 2 at Del Mar over the turf course  seeking his 3rd straight win. A bit of a home field advantage, and a rider switch to Giovanni Franco for Steven Miyadi. He is 3 for 3 at the distance, and gets a great post draw kicking off the All Turf Pick Four. #1 Glass Slippers was the winner of this race last year at KEE, and trainer Kevin Ryan and Tom Eaves team up again looking for the repeat. Strong late runner who gets the rail draw can be very dangerous if a red hot pace develops. #2 Emaraaty Ana hails from the Kevin Ryan yard as well and with Andrea Atenzi in the saddle. His last effort at Haydock was ultra impressive beating highly touted Starman last out. Look for a top effort as he seems to be on his game and will come rolling late in the lane.

Race #7 – The BC Filly and Mare Turf – 1 3/8 on the turf- 4:59 pm

BetPTC.com Analysis / #7 – War Like Goddess / #12 – Audarya / #6 – Love

#7 War Like Goddess is a stout closing filly for Bill Mott and Julien Leparoux. They are shooting for her for her fifth straight victory and she is 3 for 3 with ins at the distance. Her victory in the G1 Flower Bowl was impressive and always used a a great prep for this race in the past. Leparoux fits like a glove and has been in the irons every time but one.The one to beat with her strong late finish. #12 Audarya is returning as the winner of this event last year at KEE and is a late running gal looking for firm footing and will find it this weekend. Trainer J. W.  Fanshawe brings her to the gate and William Buick is in the saddle looking for a repeat from the outside post. #6 Love hails from the Aiden O’Brien yard with Ryan Moore as the pilot. She is 12 for 14 ITM lifetime and the perfect player to complete exotic wagers. She is a regally bred daughter of Galileo (IRE) and will be in the mix at the top of the lane.

Race #8 – The BC Sprint – 6f – 5:38 pm

BetPTC.com Analysis / #9 – Jackie’s Warrior / #9 – Dr. Schivel / #8 – Special Reserve

#9 Jackie’s Warrior seeks his 3rd straight win exiting G2 Gallant Bob at Parx, and has tactical speed which has him 2 wins at the distance. Steve Asmussen trains and Joel Rosario in the saddle. He should be in excellent position turning for home in the patient hands of Rosario. #9 Dr. Schivel is a horse for course going 3 for 3 over the course. Trained by Mark Glatt for Flavien Prat seeking his 6th straight win. Perfect stalker with a bullet work under his belt. #8 Special Reserve  2nd time off the layoff for Mike Maker and Irad Ortiz in the irons. His early speed will help his chances and Ortiz will have him in the right place looking for a gap at the top of the lane. Ortiz wins 22% with early speed runners.

Race #9 – The BC Mile – 1 mile on the turf – 6:20 pm

BetPTC.com Analysis / #3 – Space Blues / #14 – Ivar / #9 – Mother Earth

#3 Special Blues hails from the Charlie Appleby yard with William Buick in the irons. He exits a win in the G1 Prix de la Foret which has been a prep coming into this race. He is looking for three in a row, and the barn sends them ready to fire. #14 Ivar is a late runner from the Paulo Lobo barn and made a solid move in the G1 Keeneland Turf finishing 4th after getting bumped around going 5 wide. Joe Talamo in the saddle and 2nd off the layoff should have him fresh and ready to launch a late bid. #9 Mother Earth goes postward for Aiden O’Brien and Ryan Moore. She will come rolling with a big run at the top of the lane and could upset the apple cart nearing the wire.

Race #10 – The BC Distaff – 1 1/8 miles dirt – 7:00 pm

BetPTC.com Analysis / #2 – Royal Flag / #3 -Malathaat / #6 – Letruska

#2 Royal Flag comes in for Chad Brown and Joel Rosario. She is 5 for 5 ITM at the distance, and with all of the early speed it may set her up nicely. I’m looking for a mid pack stalking trip and poised to pounce around the far turn. Rosario wins 36% for Chad Brown. #3 Malathaat is a daughter of Curlin and only a head shy of being undefeated for Todd Pletcher and John Velasquez. She steps up to face older and Pletcher knows how to spot his runners well so she must be ready. She had a very nice win in the G1 Alabama and comes off a two month break with a bullet work to tighten down the screws. #6 Letruska is a speedy daughter of Super Saver for Fausto Gutierrez with Irad Ortiz in the irons. She seeks her 6th straight win and is making a 3rd off the layoff effort after scoring nicely in the G1 Spinster. There is plenty of speed in here and the bar wins 50% with graded stakes runners. She’ll be tough and loves the distance but I’m siding with runners who can stalk and close into solid fractions.

Race #11- The BC Turf – 1 1/2 on the turf – 7:40 pm

BetPTC.com Analysis / #13 – Tarnawa / #11 – Gufo / #10 – Yibir

#13 Tarnawa was last year’s winner and did it impressively for Dermot Weld and Colin Keane. She was a game 2nd in the G1 Arc, and that race has played a major prep moving forward. I’m looking for a ride where you’ll see her make a sweeping move and inhale the field down the stretch. #11 Gufo is a late runner that can really find an extra gear if the pace is solid. Comes in for Christophe Clement and Joel Rosario, and they’re winning at a 24% clip as a team. Two races back in the  G1 Sword Dancer you saw a good prep, but his last start in the G1 Turf Classic he got run down in the final strides. Rosario fits well and will have him in rolling down the lane today. #10 Yibir was ultra impressive last out in the Jockey Club Invitational under Jamie Spencer. William Buick back in the saddle today for Charlie Appleby, and I’m looking for a square price on this son of Dubawi (IRE) as they launch a strong bid down the lane.

Race  #12 – The BC Classic – 1 1/4 – 8:40 pm

BetPTC.com Analysis / #4 – Essential Quality / #6 – Art Collector / #5 – Knicks Go

#4 Essential Quality hails from the Brad Cox barn and has the services of Luis Saez as they seek their 4th straight win. This son of Tapit looks the major danger and Saez has been in the saddle for all but  his maiden break at CD. His G1 Travers win was game and comes off a two month freshener with a bullet work to seal the deal. #6 Art Collector is a son of Bernardini for Bill Mott and Mike Smith in the driver’s seat. He should be forwardly placed under Smith as they seek their fourth straight win. Smith should have him close or just off depending on the tempo, and after shipping in from the Thomas Drury barn he’s been on a roll for Mott. Saez opts for Essential Quality but having Money Mike in the saddle is a plus. #5 Knicks Go tries 10 furlongs for the first time and will come out swinging for Brad Cox and Joel Rosario. He always sports good early foot and Rosario is a master at getting them to relax and carry their speed as he wins 25% with early runners.

He will be closing from far off the pace where Prat wins 27%.

Ortiz wins 20% with late running turf horses. #11 Ivar is 1 for 1 at KEE for Paulo Lobo and Joe Talamo. They exit a win in the G1 Shadwell Mile and can stalk just off the pace making the 3rd effort off a rest. #12 Uni hails from the Chad Brown barn with Joel Rosario in the saddle. Rosario wins 20% with early runners. #4 Horologist is trained by Bill Mott with Junior Alvarado in the saddle. 3rd off the layoff looking for two in a row. The rider and trainer team up to win 28% as a team.

BetPTC.com Selections / #2 – Magical / #3 – Tarnawa / #10 – Mogul

#2 Magical hails from the Aiden O’Brien yard with Ryan Moore in the irons. She ran on a deep track last out that’s not her preferred ground. Moore fits like a glove and she finished 2nd to Enable in 2018. Look for high gear around the final furlong. #3 Tarnawa is coming off a three in a row winning effort, and the distance fits her plans. She has a wicked late kick and very impressive. Dermot Weld and Christophe Soumillion team up together for a shot at the winner’s circle. #10 Mogul comes in from the Aiden O’Brien yard. They need solid ground and the weather is projected to be perfect in Kentucky, The distance looks to fit her perfectly.

Race #12 – The G1 BC Classic – 1 1/4 – 5:18 pm

BetPTC.com Selections / #10 – Maximum Security / #8 – Improbable / #3 – By My Standards

#10 Maximum Security hails from the Bob Baffert barn with Luis Saez in the saddle. He’s been hitting on all cylinders this year and was a beaten favorite last out. Ever since the 2019 Derby, this colt has done very little wrong. #8 Improbable comes in for Bob Baffert and Irad Ortiz. Ships in from SA where they win 31% with new arrivals. Add in the bullet work and he may be dangerous seeking his 4th straight win. #3 By My Standards goes to post for Bret Calhoun and Gabriel Saez. 2 months off the layoff with red hot works show promise. This son of Goldencents always brings his top game rolling off the pace.

Race #7 – The BC Juvenile Turf – 1 mile turf – 3:10pm

BetPTC.com Selections / #6- Mustasaabeq / #9 Battleground /#2 – New Mandate

#6 Mustasaabeq goes postward for Todd Pletcher and Luis Saez who are winning 31% as a team in the last few months. He circled the field seeing every inch of the track with a wide closing effort to win the G2 Bourbon. He was 8 wide and had a super strong late kick. #8 Battleground comes in from the Aiden O’Brien yard with Ryan Moore in the driver’s seat. This son of War Front kicked out and circled the field quickly last out to win Gr2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage at Goodwood last out. Been off since July and that is his only drawback. The Euro trainers have done well in this race over the years. #2 New Mandate is a son of New Bay (GB) rolling off three straight wins. He stalked the pace last out for Ralph Beckett as Frankie Dettori looks for his 3rd win aboard this talented colt. Frankie always looks to shine like a new penny on the big money days.

An up close stalker who is going to very tough when they turn for home. #3 Dayoutoftheoffice is a perfect three for three and gets to try her hand at going two turns for the first time. Trainer Tim Hamm is new to the big scene, but a regular name on the cut below the top rung of conditioners. He brings them ready and you can bet dollars to donuts he’ll have her ready for a top effort. Junior Alvarado has the call. #7 Princess Noor is a perfect 3 for 3 Bob Baffert. Race #9 – The BC Juvenile Turf Fillies – 1 mile on the turf – 4:30 pm

BetPTC.com Selections / #10 – Campanelle / #4 – Plum Ali / #14 – Editor At Large

#10 Campanelle is a perfect three for three shipping in from Deauville off a win. She’s been in the state’s training since July and Wesley Ward is the conditioner. She whipped the boys last out in Gr1 company and returns to face the ladies. The added ground should be no problem as Frankie Dettori looks to take them from gate to wire. #4 Plum Ali is a closer for the Christophe Clement barn with Joel Rosario in the irons. Her perfect 3 for 3 record is on the line and owns a sharp work coming into the race.

Race #10 – The BC Juvenile – 1 1/16 – 5:15 pm

BetPTC.com Selections / #7 – Jackie’s Warrior / #5 – Essential Quality / #3 – Reinvestment Risk

#7 Jackie’s Warrior is a perfect 4 for 4 and owns a boatload of red hot speed. Steve Asmussen brings him to post with Joel Rosario in the saddle and looks to dictate the pace heading into the short stretch. There are some rabbits here who could pose a problem if he doesn’t make the front. Rosario wins 24% on speedy type runners. His win in the G1 Champagne is promising as this race has played a good prep in the past. Catch him if you can. #5 Essential Quality is a son of Tapit for Brad Cox and Luis Saez. His victory over the track in the G1 Breeders’ Futurity was very impressive and will be trying to wheel in the leaders in the far turn. His bullet work has me thinking good things can happen for the connections. #3 Reinvestment Risk has run 2nd twice against Jackie, and always seems to be playing second fiddle. If anything keeps the favorite from dictating the pace, this son of Upstart may have the best seat in the house turning for home for Chad Brown and Irad Ortiz.

What to look for in a replay and what to take notes on:
-Was the horse compromised in the race, troubled trip, wide, no pace to run at, caught in a duel?

-Do not forget to make notes that might make the horse look better, lone speed, big pace to run at, perfect trip, etc.

When watching the replays, you do not need to know who the horse will be running against in the future.  It just gives you more info on the horse that many won’t take the time to see. Also if the horse is running against other horses in the upcoming race you will see who is better based on the replay. Sometimes who beats who doesn’t tell the whole story, this is when you can hit that home run.

Monday Oct 21st is when the pre entries close and I would expect by Wednesday Oct 23rd you will be able to get a good idea of who is in. Now you can start figuring out the potential of each horse. I would avoid figuring out race shape but decide if the horse is a need-the-lead horse or a closer that needs pace to run at.

Monday Oct. 28th is when the post position draw is; I would expect by that evening you will be able to find what each race would look at. NOW start to figure out race shape.

Why prep now? The obvious reason, as mentioned, is get ahead of the rest and avoid so much work later. But even more importantly, avoid getting swayed but the media and all the hype. Let you be the judge first as to how talented you think the horse is and then listen to the others.

BetPTC.com Graded Stakes Preview – 7/7/18

BetPTC.com Graded Stakes Preview / Ed Meyer

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Mendelssohn / #7 – Firenze Fire / #3 – Rugbyman

Race #6 – G3 Dwyer – 1 mile – 4:36 pm EDT

#6 Mendelssohn is a son of Scat Daddy looking to get back on track in a big way. He’s looking to rebound off a dismal Kentucky Derby effort, and Aidan O’Brien retains the services of nine time Breeders’ Cup winning rider Ryan Moore. I’ll toss out the Derby for a bevy of reasons, and most importantly he caught a monster by the name of Justify. He broke his maiden in Ireland going a mile and has faced every possible surface. He gets 2nd Lasix and should make a big move getting back on track.

#7 Firenze Fire looks to bounce back from the Derby blues as well. Irad Ortiz in the saddle for Jason Servis and won the G1 Champagne last year going a mile. He likes the distance and is 2 for 3 ITM going this far, and we can expect a big closing move fresh off a 2 month layoff.

#3 Rugbyman has Jose Ortiz for Graham Motion in the driver’s seat. A lightly raced colt who broke his maiden by 14 over the track. He looked super running a closing effort in the Easy Goer and adds blinkers today.

Race #8 – G1 Belmont Oaks – 1 1/4 on the turf – 5:46 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 Toinette / #10 Mighty Scarlett / #8 Thewayiam

#5 Toinette has Flavien Prat in the saddle for Neil Drysdale. Prat wins 23% on the turf and she’s a perfect 3 for 3 on the sod. She is a daughter of Scat Daddy and will come calling late in the lane. She’s been off for two months and has four works over the Belmont turf around the dogs. Look for a mighty run against a talented field.

#10 Mighty Scarlett comes to post for Chad Brown with Jose Ortiz in the irons. She’s a daughter of Scat Daddy and is 3 for 3 ITM on the green. She had a building block effort in the G3 Wonder Again, and Ortiz wins 19% over the greensward. When he rides for Chad Brown they win 21% and this lightly raced filly is ready to start her summer campaign.

#8 Thewayiam goes to post for trainer Graham Motion with John Velasquez in the driver’s seat. She’s 8 for 10 ITM on the grass and exits a fast closing effort in the Penn Oaks getting beat as the chalk. Look for a rebound effort worthy of sealing the deal as she’ll come rolling in the final quarter mile under Johnny V.

Race #10 – The G1 Belmont Derby – 1 1/4 on the turf – 6:50 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #7 Catholic Boy / #8 Hawkish / #4 Hunting Horn

#7 Catholic Boy has Javier Castellano in the saddle aboard this son of More than Ready. He is 3 for 4 ITM on the grass and locked horns with some of the big boys. Trainer Jonathon Thomas wins 38% with graded stakes and comes in 2nd off a layoff. He won at first asking off a 3 month layoff and is looking for continued improvement rolling late in the lane.

#8 Hawkish is a son of Artie Schiller who won the G2 Penn Mile. He begins his summer campaign with Manny Franco in the saddle for James Toner. He owns a sharp work around the dogs over the Belmont weeds. Franco will uncork a rally when he gives the cue.

#4 Hunting Horn has Ryan Moore in irons for Aidan O’Brien. They bring a son of Camelot to post who won the Group 3 Hampton Court at Royal Ascot. He gets first Lasix and Ryan Moore comes to the big city to take down a nice score with a repeat effort.

The last big weekend is in the books and the countdown to the Breeders’ Cup has officially started. At the time of this post, there are less than 21 days. Now is the time to keep on top of your reading and combing over race replays. – In the meantime, here are some runners that may come right back and build your bankroll. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com!

Race #5 – Starter Allowance – 1 1/16 on the turf – #2 – King of Spades

#2 -King of Spades = Son of Street Cry who is 3/5 ITM at Belmont and cutting back from 1 1/4 to 1 1/16. He was dropping in class and had the services of Joel Rosario in the saddle. He was bumped soundly at the start and was pinched back. He got back on task and managed to finish 5th this day. – A cleaner trip has him right in the mix.

Race #8 – The G1 Champagne – 1 mile on the dirt – #4 – Enticed

#4 – Enticed = Son of Medaglia d’ Oro coming in off a strong maiden win. Kiaran McLaughlin trainee who ran green but still got the win at first asking. He owned a bullet work coming into the race and a solid work tab keeping all systems ready. He did an excellent job of tracking the pace but was shuffled into the 6 path at the top of the lane. It doesn’t take much to get a two-year-old off task and he put together a solid run finishing 3rd this day.

Race #9 – The G3 Hill Prince – 1 1/8 on the turf – #6 – Bricks and Mortar

#6 – Bricks and Mortar = Chad Brown trainee and a son of Giant’s Causeway. He was 2/2 at Belmont with wins and was a beaten favorite in the G3 Saranac at Saratoga. His late punch has been his calling card and Joel Rosario was in the saddle. – He was in tight after the break and forced to take up and steady. He made a good late run for the show dough and will be heard from next out with a little cleaner start.

Race #11 – Allowance – 1 1/16 on the turf – #4 – Minsky Moment

#4 – Minsky Moment = Chad Brown runner with Irad Ortiz in the saddle. This son of Flatter has been heavily bet the last 5 of 6 starts and has yet to run on the turf. His breeding suggests he should relish the sod and Ortiz win 18% on the greensward. He was bottled up around the far turn and was forced to tap on the brakes a few times. He tipped off the rail and made a strong late kick weaving in and out of traffic.

Race #5 – The G2 Woodford – 5 1/2f on the turf – #1 – Conquest Panthera

#1 – Conquest Panthera = Robby Albarado in the saddle for Mark Casse. They were dropping in class and cutting back from 1 mile to 5 1/2f. This son of Kitten’s Joy has faced some tough runners and the sprint this day was coming off his 3rd off the layoff – 17%. He broke slowly from the gate and saved ground the entire trip. Albarado tipped off the rail and made a strong late challenge finishing a very game 4th place.

Race #7 – The G1 First Lady – 1 mile on the turf – #3 – Dona Bruja

#3 – Dona Bruja = Declan Cannon in the irons for Ignacio Correas. She exited the 1 3/16 G1 Beverly D and was a beaten favorite that day. Ever since coming in from Argentina she has looked better with every effort. She is 11/11 ITM on the turf and was turning back to a flat mile. – She kicked going 6 wide and made a strong late run. Maybe a little more ground would be to her liking and if she gets the right distance she will come rolling late in the lane.

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

When the Travers results hit the history books you know the summer racing season is nearing the finish. The days of sun and fun are slowly creeping toward fall racing and the Breeders’ Cup. – When handicappers see Labor Day on the calendar, it’s time to start thinking Keeneland and Fall Stars weekend. But hold your horses! – There’s plenty of summer action in the plans and wagering opportunities await. While you’re making your plans to hit the track, keep these runners in mind. They may have something more to offer and reward you the next time they hit the track. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com!

Race #6 – Mdn Claiming – 1 mile on the turf

#5 – New Canaan = Jose Ortiz in the saddle for Linda Rice (23%), and they were dropping in class and going from 5 1/2f – 1 mile. She was sent off the odds-on chalk and was forced to check up sharply at the break. Sometimes a bad start can end the race before it begins, and this race needs to be kept in mind as a very good excuse.

Race #7 – The Yaddo Stakes – 1 1/16 on the turf

#7 – Ack Nasty = Joel Rosario in the saddle for Chad Brown. This gal was making her 2nd off the layoff (21%) and 5/6 ITM at the Spa. She stalked at the rear of the field and was blocked badly down the lane this day.

Race #8 – Seek the Ante Stakes – 6 1/2f

#7 – Newport Breeze = Jose Ortiz in the irons for Peter Eurton. They were coming off a win at Del Mar moving up the class ladder. Ortiz had her moving around the far turn this day and looked to be running “green” as a youngster sometimes does. She was forced to settle for 2nd money this day and she’ll only benefit from this effort moving forward.

Race #10 – The G1 Sword Dancer – 1 1/2 on the turf

#5 – Money Multiplier = Javier Castellano aboard this son of Lookin At Lucky making his 2nd start of the season. He was 3/3 ITM at the Spa and probably on the same plan as last year heading into the Breeders’ Cup. He’ll most probably move to Belmont putting the finishing touches on his plans. This plan looks exactly like 2016 and could be a good time to be on the watch. He swung out 6 wide at the top of the lane and started to pick up ground getting bested at the finish. This race is a good sign of things to come.

Race #11 – G1 Travers – 1 1/4

#11 – Gunnevera = Edgard Zayas aboard for Antonio Sano. This son of Dialed In was making his second off a break from the Triple Crown run. He scored easily in a $100k stake at GP and owns a bullet work coming into this race. He was bumped hard at the start and rebounded nicely looking the major danger. The freshening and maturing may be coming at the right time for a fall campaign. He looked very good this day but caught a tiger named West Coast.

Race #13 – Mdn Claiming – 1 1/16 on the turf

#2 – Admirals Cove = Manny Franco in the driver’s seat for David Donk. This son of Hat Trick has been off for 3 months and dropping down in class (20%). – He stumbled badly at the start and finished with a good late kick showing promise for his next effort.
