FLORIDA DERBY DAY 2019

BetPTC.com Selections / Weekend Stakes Preview / Ed Meyer

Gulfstream Park Race #8 – The G2 Gulfstream Oaks – 1 1/16 – 3:00 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Dunbar Road / #3 – Point of Honor / #5 – Champagne Anyone

#6 Dunbar Road is perfect for the Chad Brown barn with Irad Ortiz in the irons. She’s a daughter of Quality Road and snatched the lead strongly and never looked back. The one turn distance should allow Ortiz to stay outside and settle. I’m looking for another effort to keep her record intact and Ortiz rises to the occasion on big money days. #3 Point of Honor is a daughter of Curlin and is two for two for the George Weaver barn. Javier Castellano in the saddle and she exits an impressive win in the Suncoast at Tampa Bay. Look for the high percentage Castellano to come rolling around the far turn. She has four solid works at Palm Meadows and hasn’t done anything wrong. #5 Champagne Anyone is a daughter of Street Sense and Chris Landeros up for Ian Wilkes. This is her 3rd off the layoff where the barn wins 17% and adds blinkers today.

Race #13 – The G2 Pan American – 1 1/2 on the turf – 6:00 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #1 – Focus Group / #4 – Canessar / #2 – Melmich

#1 Focus Group has been away for five months for the Chad Brown barn and draws the rail with Irad Ortiz. This son of Kitten’s Joy is 2 for 2 ITM at the distance and drops down a notch from G1 company. Brown is winning 30% at the meet and his last effort has me looking for Ortiz to come flying late. #4 Canessar hails from the barn of Arnaud Delacour with Fergal Lynch in the saddle. He’s been off for two months and is 3 for 5 ITM going this far. He had a brutal trip last out and this closer may come rolling for a big piece of the pie. #2 Melmich is making a 3rd off the layoff move and came flying late in the G2 Mac Diamardia. Javier Castellano is attractive when thinking about your wagers and he makes very few mistakes when the money is on the line.

Race #14 – The G1 Florida Derby – 1 1/8 – 6:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #4 – Bourbon War / #3 – Harvey Wallbanger / #9 – Code of Honor

#4 Bourbon War comes in 3rd off a layoff and is lightly raced. I really liked his moves in the G2 FOY and Ortiz gets added distance which should play into his plans perfectly. Mark Hennig is the trainer and he may have a very nice runner who will be heading to Louisville after this race. #3 Harvey Wallbanger comes from the Kenny McPeek barn making his 2nd start of the year. He was very consistent at CD last year and his last work was a scorching bullet going 47 flat. B.J. Hernandez in the irons and rolls in 56 days later off a win in the G2 Holy Bull. Look for a long range launch at the top of the lane. #9 Code of Honor comes in off a win in the G2 FOY and should be a perfect stalker with the added ground. John Velasquez has the call and rolls in off three straight bullet works. Look for a top effort.

Race #9 – The G1 Dubai World Cup – 1 1/4 – 12:40 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #10 – Yoshida / #12 – Thunder Snow / #5 – Seeking the Soul

A field of thirteen going to post in the “Duel in the Desert,” and the entire card should offer solid betting value. #12 Thunder Snow is going to take a great deal of money but will have to overcome the outside post. He is 7 for 7 ITM at Meydan. #3 North America is looking for three straight after having a slow start last year at the break. #5 Seeking the Soul comes in for Dallas Stewart and Mike Smith. He has two hot works at Fair Grounds and the connections aren’t making the trip for nothing.

#10 Yoshida hails from the Bill Mott barn with Jose Ortiz in the saddle. He was a beaten favorite in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf. Making the surface switch has Mott winning 13% and if you toss out the two lifetime turf efforts he always comes calling. Ortiz is an excellent reinsman and they won18% as a team last year.

Race #12 – The G2 Davona Dale – 1 mile – 5:01 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #1 – Jaywalk / #3 – Another Time / #5 – Champagne Anyone

#1 Jaywalk has been away from the races for four months since the BC Juvenile Fillies. She is looking to strike at first asking and that would make her five in a row right off the bench. Joel Rosario travels in from California and he has been aboard her last two impressive outings. She cuts back in distance off her victory in the BC and she has plenty of solid works at Palm Meadows. She draws the rail and that spot has been winning at 21%. #3 Another Time ships in from Woodbine two back and picks up the services of Irad Ortiz. She ran a very game third effort at TBD even though it was a troubled trip. I think it takes a couple races to get acclimated back to the dirt and she happens to have a red hot reinsman calling the shots. Look for a strong closing punch. #5 Champagne Anyone is a daughter of Street Sense looking to ship in from CD out of the G3 Forward Gal. She has a good late kick and hails from the Ian Wilkes barn. Chris Landeros makes the trip and she will come rolling late in the lane.

Race #13 – The G2 Fountain of Youth – 1 1/16 – 5:32 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Signalman / #8 – Global Campaign / #7 – Hidden Scroll

#6 Signalman comes from the barn of Ken McPeek with B.J. Hernandez in the driver’s seat. He is 5 for 5 ITM lifetime and won the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club at CD. He looked promising at two and his three year old season looks promising. He has a strong late punch and his works at GP have shown promise. #8 Global Campaign is a perfect two for two and hails from the Stanley Hough barn. He is a perfect stalking sort and his races have really shown a sign of good things to come. His works at Palm Meadows have been sparkling and I’m looking for a big effort. #7 Hidden Scroll is a lightly raced colt who is an impressive one for one. This son of Hard Spun drew off to win by 14 and Joel Rosario is aboard for a good reason. Trainer Bill Mott has been on a roll winning at a super 20% so far this meet as his runner looks to duplicate his last explosive win.

Race #14 – The G2 Mac Diarmida – 1 3/6 on the turf – 6:06 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #11 – Channel Maker / #9 – Kulin Rock / #5 – Vettori Kin

#11 Channel Maker hails from the impressive Bill Mott barn. He is making his 2nd start off the layoff and has the services of Joel Rosario. He can be a versatile stalker, and drawing the outside post may allow him time to get into position. #9 Kulin Rock has Jose Ortiz aboard for trainer Mike Maker. This son of Lonhro is 3 for 5 ITM over the GP green and Ortiz picks up the mount after a $50k starter claiming race loss. He should make a good late run and Ortiz moves him right into the game. #5 Vettori Kin ships in from Woodbine facing some very tough company. He is 5 for 11 ITM on the sod and trainer Ken McPeek can bring them ready in a hurry. B.J. Hernandez in the saddle and a big effort would not surprise at all. He is the deep closing sort and look for his silks at the top of the lane.

Race #9 – The G3 Forward Gal – 7f – 4:07 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #4 – Feedback / #7 – Bye Bye J / #1 – Champagne Anyone

#4 Feedback is a daughter of Violence and she won impressively by eight lengths under Irad Ortiz. She did this well within herself and gets added distance which should offer no problem. She’s been away from the races for 5 months and has a regular work tab. Chad Brown is the conditioner and he is winning 21% and 28% with layoff runners coming back to the races. #7 Bye Bye J is a Ronald Spatz trainee and John Velasquez in the irons. She is a perfect 2 for 2 at GP and 2 for with wins. The only race she lost was facing the boys and been away for 56 days. Her dam Red Pine has 4 starts and 4 wins. #1 Champagne Anyone is a son of Street Sense with Chris Landeros in the saddle. She exits the G2 Golden Rod and ships in from CD after two months on the shelf.

Race #10 – The G3 Swale – 7f – 4:40 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #3 – Topper T / #5 – Call Paul / #9 – Zenden

#3 Topper T is a son of Bellamy Road for the red hot Bill Mott barn winning 28%. He is been off for two months shipping in from CD. He’s faced much tougher and should show very good early speed under Javier Castellano. #5 Call Paul is a speedy son of Friesen Fire for the red hot Jason Servis barn winning 43%. The move back to 7f should fit his liking as he won a stakes at Parx last out going the same distance. He should be a perfect stalking trip and pounce at the top of the lane. #9 Zenden is a colt by Fed Biz and is a perfect two for two lifetime. He’s been away for 56 days and his two wins have come over the GP surface.

Race #11 – The G2 Holy Bull – 1 1/16 – 5:13 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #8 – Maximus Mischief / #1 Garter and Tie / #6 – Mihos

#8 Maximus Mischief is a son of Into Mischief who is a perfect three for three winning the G2 Remsen. He grabbed the lead going 9f and cuts back to 8.5f. He has been off for two months and his works have been sharp. #1 Garter and Tie has Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle making his third off the layoff. He is 6 for 7 ITM over the GP strip. The rail post is winning at 27% and may be the place to be. #6 Mihos is a son of Cairo Prince and is making his third off the layoff. Ever since adding Lasix he’s been double tough. John Velasquez picks up the mount for James Jerkins and should be a major player when they turn for home.
