BetPTC.com Selections / #4 – Santa Monica / #2 – Fools’ Gold / #1- Empress of the Nile

#4 Santa Monica is a daughter of Mastercraftsman (IRE) for trainer Chad Brown with Irad Ortiz in the saddle. This is her 2nd off the layoff where Brown wins 25% and is two for two ITM at the Spa. She is a stout closer and had to steady sharply last out. She regained her momentum and finished a game third. Look for a strong finish by Ortiz down the lane. #2 Fool’s Gold is a daughter of Medaglia d’ Oro for Chad Brown and Javier Castellano. She is 2 for 2 ITM at the  Spa and won the G3 Waya last out. Her solid late kick will fit in with well with the distance. Castellano wins 23% on the greensward. #1 Empress of the Nile is a daughter of Pioneer of the Nile for trainer Graham Motion and Irad Ortiz. Motion is 4 for 6 ITM the past couple weeks as she makes a 3rd off the layoff move capped with a 7 wide late rally win last out. She is 2 for 3 ITM at Saratoga and Ortiz in the irons is ultra attractive.

Race #11 – The G1 Woodward – 1 1/8 – 6:00 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #7 – Yoshida / #3 – Vino Rosso / #9 – Tom’s d’Etat

#7 Yoshida is a son of Heart’s Cry (JPN) for trainer Bill Mott and Joel Rosario in the driver’s seat. 2nd off shipping in from Churchill Downs and his last effort in the G1 Whitney was strong. He is 2 for 2 ITM at the Spa and runners coming through Kentucky have been doing well at the Spa. Rosario fits and Mott is dangerous every time he saddles. He won this race last year on his way to the Breeders’ Cup. #3 Vino Rosso is a son of Curlin for trainer Todd Pletcher and Johnny V. Blinkers off today and the barn wins 23% on this equipment move. They are coming off a short 25 day layoff and Pletcher has a maturing runner looking for a sharp effort. #9 Tom’s d’ Etat is a son of Smart Strike for trainer Al Stall and Irad Ortiz. He’s a horse for the course going a perfect three for three at the Spa. Ortiz should have him up close leading the train. Ortiz wins 24% with early runners and has a solid win in the Alydar Stakes.

Del Mar

Race #7 – The G2 John C. Mabee – 1 1/8 on the turf – 8:00 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #1 – Vasilika / #9 – Elysea’s World / #4 – Toinette

#1 Vasilika is a daughter of Skipshot for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. She reunites with Flavien Prat and makes her 2nd off the layoff move. She was a beaten favorite in the G2 Yellow Ribbon and stretches out to a preferred distance where she’ll stalk mid pack and pounce. #9 Elysea’s World is a daughter of Champs Elysees (GB) making her 2nd off effort for Richard Baltas. She’s a stone cold closer and the added ground should be welcome. She’ll be in high gear turning for home. #4 Toinette is a daughter of Scat Daddy for trainer Neil Drysdale and Rafael Bejarano. She is 1 for 1 at Del Mar and gets added distance. This is her 2nd start of the year and is 5 for 6 with wins on the green. She’ll be stalking the speed and make a big run around the far turn. Bejarano wins 19% with stalking type runners.

Race #9 – The G1 Del Mar Debutante – 7f – 9:00 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Bast / #7 – Inspiressa / #2 – Comical

#5 Bast is a two yr old daughter of Uncle Mo for trainer Bob Baffert winning 25% with Drayden Van Dyke in the driver’s seat. They add blinkers today and that yields a 35% win clip for the barn. She was off slow last out and came flying four wide in the lane closing stoutly. The blinkers should keep her focused and stretching out in distance should be a real bonus. The rider and trainer have been five for five the past two weeks and owns a sharp work to have her ready. #7 Inspiressa hails from the barn of Peter Eurton with Joe Talamo in the irons. This daughter of Commissioner wins 33% with his firsters and she did not disappoint. She was forced out in the G2 Sorrento with 1st Lasix and second time Lasix gets a 29% win clip for the barn. She takes her game to the next level and I’m looking for a big effort. #2 Comical comes from the Doug O’Neill barn with Norberto Arroyo. 3rd off the shelf and this speedy gal should be dangerous with a new rider today. She should have a garden trip just off the leader and take over the engine down the backstretch. O’Neill wins 17% with his sprinters.

She has four solid works under her belt and Pletcher scores 25% coming back off a beaten favorite angle. She gets added distance and this race should fit her nicely. #3 Virginia Eloise is a daughter of Curlin for the Pletcher barn. BetPTC.com Selections / #9 Gunnevera / #1 Yoshida / #10 Seeking the Soul

#9 Gunnevera comes to post for trainer Antonio Sano with Edgard Zayas in the saddle. This son of Dialed In ran into a wall in the Dubai World Cup two races back and came in off a 5 month layoff to score easily in the perfect prep. He’s had some problems in the past but looks healthy and ready for a big coming out party. He’s 2 for 2 ITM at Saratoga and makes the 2nd off the layoff move. I’m looking for a mature and ready runner to strut his stuff. #1 Yoshida is a Japanese bred runner for trainer Bill Mott. Joel Rosario in the irons and comes off a good effort at Ascot two back in the Gr1 Queen Anne. One thing for sure. Mott would not have him entered if he had any doubts about his ability. Bill Mott is 40% making the turf to dirt switch and it would be best not to count him out just yet. #10 Seeking the Soul is a son of Perfect Soul for talented trainer Dallas Stewart. He was a beaten favorite at Indiana last out and that was his last start since the Pegasus Cup in January. He’s 2 for 2 ITM at Saratoga and owns some very nice works to show readiness.

#5 Dream Maker is a son of Tapit for trainer Mark Casse. Julien Leparoux is the reinsman and they score 23% as a team. His only effort was a stout move circling the field at Churchill. He gets an extra furlong to run and has a sharp workout over the track.

#1 Sombeyay hails from the Todd Pletcher barn with Javier Castellano in the irons. He’s had two eventful trips but his race in the Tremont was impressive. He stumbled at the start and came rolling late. He sports a bullet work over the deep Saratoga training course putting the final touch on his preparation.

#7 Bano Solo is a son of Goldenscents from the Steve Asmussen barn. His sire fires 16% first time winners and did not disappoint at Churchill. His workout pattern has been sharp and I’m looking for a top effort.

She rolled off two wins at Belmont and the German bred should be forwardly placed with a tactical rider calling the shots. She’ll give them all they want.

#2 Proctor’s Ledge has Jose Ortiz in the driver’s seat for trainer Brendan Walsh. A daughter of Ghostzapper who is 2 for 2 over the course and finished a solid place effort in the G1 Just A Game at Belmont. She loves the course and has some solid works under her belt.

BetPTC.com Selections = #5 – Honorable Duty / #6 – McCraken / #2 – Neolithic

#5 – Honorable Duty = Corey Lanerie in the irons as he is making his 2nd start off a brief layoff. His impressive win in the Lukas Classic shows he’s ready to get back to work and is 1/1 over the course. The distance should be no problem as he is 3/5 ITM going this far. #6 – McCraken = Brian Hernandez for Ian Wilkes and they are bringing this son of Ghostzapper off a 3-month layoff. His dismal effort in the G1 Travers showed he needed to have a little time down, and a brief summer freshening is just what the doctor ordered. He has a solid work tab and hasn’t seen Keeneland since he was a beaten favorite in the Bluegrass. Look for a whole new runner. #2 – Neolithic = Speedy son of Harlan’s Holiday has been off for 56 days since the G1 Woodward. Look for Robby Albarado to send right to the lead and steal this race for the Pletcher barn.

She’s been the picture of consistency in 2017 and is looking to make it 3-in-a-row after taking down the G3 Noble Damsel. She is 4/4 ITM over the Belmont sod and looking to make it four straight in 2017. This daughter of Air Chief Marshall is taking a big step in class but her recent efforts warrant a hard look at scoring at a price. #8 – Westit = Manny Franco aboard this daughter of Tapit as she ships in from France.  She has run on synthetic, turf, and faced the boys many times in France. If the ground has a little cut on Saturday I would give her a good look to complete your exotics.

BetPTC.com Selections = #3 – Miss Sky Warrior / #5 – Birdatthewire / #2 – Tejana

#3 – Miss Sky Warrior = Javier Castellano in the irons for Kelly Breen. She’s been away for 5 months since the Kentucky Oaks and her morning works show a filly ready to roll. She cuts back in distance and drops in class and this should make her a major danger. Castellano takes over for Paco Lopez and if her last bullet work is any indication she’ll be tough to handle. #5 – Birdatthewire = Manny Franco teams up with Thom Proctor. She’s coming off a two-month break and has been working very well. She adds distance and Franco did an excellent job in the G1 Ballerina last out finishing 4th. #2 – Tejana = Speedy daughter of Curlin has the services of one of the best speed riders in the country with Jose Ortiz. He’s been away from the races for 57 days and a perfect 2/2 at the distance. He should get a perfect close up stalking trip and when given the cue should make his presence felt. #4 – Control Group = Irad Ortiz in the saddle for Rudy Rodriguez and this son of Posse does every well against New York runners. This is a huge step in class, but the colt is looking for his 4th straight win and there seems no better time to test the waters. #7 – Testosterstone = John Velazquez in the irons for Gary Sciacca and this son of Birdstone has been racing outside of New York company for awhile. A perfect stalker who can be a major player at the top of the lane.

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

The wagering world had bankroll action on the G1 Alabama and G1 Pacific Classic. Elate scored in the 137th edition under the guidance of Jose Ortiz for Bill Mott. The G1 Pacific Classic set up as the “battle of the stablemates” as Collected set a reasonable pace besting Arrogate down the lane.  Last weekend was hardly the crown jewel of summer as Saratoga offers up the 148th running of the Travers / The Mid-Summer Derby this Saturday. – We still have a few days until post time, and here are some runners who you’ll need to keep on your radar screen. They may come right back and reward their loyal backers next time on the track. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com!

Race #5 – Mdn Sp Wt – 6f – #6 – Variant Perception

#6 – Variant Perception = This was a 1st-time starter by Curlin for the Chad Brown barn. His dam Mystery Trip has 5 winners from 5 starters and came in off some good works. – He broke in the air prior to the start and brushed leaving the starting gate.  Brown will have him ready for the races next up and wins at a solid clip 2nd trip out.

Race #6 – Alw $85,000 – 1 1/8 on the main – #5 – Hookup

#5 – Hookup = Manny Franco in the saddle and this son of Union Rags has been away from the races for 8 months. – He was knocked around the start and was taken out of stride. After being forced into another, Franco picked up the action and made a solid bid finishing up to be third this day.

Race #9 – G1 Alabama Stakes – 1 1/4 on the main – #1 – New Money Honey

#1 – New Money Honey = This was her first time on the dirt and has been a turf monster. She was looking three-in-a-row and her 3rd off the shelf. – Javier Castellano in the irons and Chad Brown the conditioner (33%). She was in tracking mode and forced to steady and tap on the breaks at the 1/4 pole weakening down the lane.

Race #5 – Mdn Sp Wt – 1 1/16 on the turf – #5 – Lemoona

#5 – Lemoona = Two-yr-old filly by Lemon Drop Kid, and she has the breeding that suggests she’ll relish the turf. – She was sandwiched and slammed leaving the starting gate. Junior Alvarado did a great job-saving ground and was forced to sweep 5 wide at the 1/4 pole making a late bid for 2nd money.

Race  #9 – $100,000 Summer Colony – 1 1/8 on the main – #4 – Romantic Vision

#4 – Romantic Vision = Javier Castellano in the saddle for Rusty Arnold. She’s been away from the races for 60 days since Churchill Downs and had a couple of works over the deep Oklahoma training track. This was not her day at all as she stumbled badly at the start, took up and bumped. After all this action she never regained her momentum and called it a day. Look for her to return at this level of the upper stratosphere of the allowance ranks.

A little bit of racing luck and she’ll be getting a trip to the winner’s circle.

Itsinthepost ships in from California for Jeff Mullins. Tyler Baze fits this gelding taking down two straight G2 events at Keeneland and Santa Anita. The field shows plenty of early foot, and this stalker should be right off the leaders ready to pounce. Beach Patrol makes his 3rd start off a layoff and should be a major pace presence. This son of Lemon Drop Kid has a case of “seconditis” rolling off four straight place finishes. Florent Geroux aboard for Chad Brown makes him very dangerous. Oscar Nominated is a son of Kitten’s Joy and sports a very nice late turn of foot. Kendrick Carmouche gets the nod and he’ll be in the mix at the top of the lane. Lucky Lindy gets the acid test making a huge jump in class; but not to fret. He’s honest and exits off a win going 5/5 ITM on the turf.

Unchained Melody is a daughter of Smart Strike for the Brian Lynch barn. She is 2/3 ITM and her last trip over the Belmont surface may be a sign of things to come. She sports the best last race Beyer figure and could be maturing at the right time. Lockdown exits the Kentucky Oaks for Bill Mott and earned a 3rd place finish on a sloppy / sealed track. She loves New York and her effort in the G2 Gazelle is better than it looks. Solid works have her ready for a strong summer campaign. Vexatious is a daughter of Giant’s Causeway who exits the Kentucky Oaks. She made a solid move and hung down the lane. She always gets a piece of the pie and faced the boys earlier in the year at Fair Grounds. Moana is a daughter of Uncle Mo. She has the look of a late bloomer and may not have taken to the sloppy track in the G2 Black Eyed Susan. She should relish the fast going expected in the weather report for Belmont.

She’s been facing some tough fillies and will come calling late in the lane. Kinsley Kisses is a daughter of Congrats who is 2/2 at GP and exits the 100k Sugar Maple at Charlestown in the slop. She enjoys the distance and has Tyler Gafflione in the driver’s seat for Todd Pletcher winning at a (37%) clip. Dearest is a solid filly who is 6/6 ITM at GP. She sports a bullet work off that win and seeks to become the 3rd filly in seven runnings to win the race. Inflexibility makes her 3rd off the shelf effort and was a beaten favorite in the Woodbine Oaks facing Holy Helena. Castellano and Chad Brown team up as she looks to roll from off the pace. This son of English Channel has been running on the turf and gets his second chance over the tapeta surface.
