Hearing the word Labor Day as a young racing fan meant the end of summer. Going back to school, no more days at the track with grandpa, and the tanned skin on my face and arms would soon fade away. –  I would look back over the sweet summer days with endless joy as they would culminate with a blowout to be held at River Downs. The Cradle Stakes was for up-and-coming two-year-olds. – It was the end of one chapter, and the beginning of another with my first local glimpse of what could be the following season.  The pungent aroma of cheap cigars, and the inky hands one could only get from reading the Daily Racing Form. – When Labor Day rolls around Monday, I’ll have a lifetime of fond memories tagging along with me to the races. – In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for theses red-hot runners. They have a good excuse, and could offer up a solid price at the windows.

Saratoga

8/24/16 – Race #3 – #4 – 6f on the dirt

#4 – Phocea – She broke last under Eric Cancel and came flying late in the lane. Her late punch was a real eye-opener and if she improves just a smidge off this effort she’ll be heading to the winner’s circle.

8/24/16 – Race #4 – #9 – 5 1/2f on the turf

#9 – Peace Points – The rider was forced to steady as soon as the gates broke, and Kendrick Carmouche was “ping-ponged” around quite a bit. – After gathering his bearings he darted in and out and swung five wide closing like a down-bound train. – This guy deserves a good hard look before you pull the trigger next out.

Saratoga

8/27/16 – Race #2 – #6 – 1 1/8 on the turf

#6 – Kabang – Jose Ortiz for Michael Trombetta they were off a beat slow leaving the starting gate. Once Ortiz caught up and had the field in sight he made a solid bid to finish up in 5th place. – Maybe a little better trip will be what the doctor ordered and you can look ahead for (10-1) or better.

8/27/16 – Race #5 – #6 – 1 3/8th’s on the turf

#6 – Deeply Undervalued – Irad Ortiz in the irons for Chad Brown and they broke outward leaving the starting gate and caused some bumping around. – Once Ortiz got his mount under control he made a strong late bid to finish a beaten favorite second. Maybe a little less ground, or just another shot a clear beginning. Either way, he’ll give them fits at Belmont or elsewhere next time out.

Belterra Park

8/28/16 – Race #1 – #5 – 6f on the dirt

#5 – Equulei – Geovany Garcia was aboard and had to check hard into the first turn. Once he had his filly back in gear, they made a sustained bid to show good promise next out.

8/28/16 – Race #7 – #2 – 1 mile on the turf

#2 – Run Groom Run – Alex Estrada picked up the mount and checked so hard into the first turn he stood straight up in the irons. – The rider tried many times to settle and was forced to check, wait for a gap, and once saw a glimmer of daylight was a day late and dollar short getting his cue for clear sailing. He was (12-1) on this day beaten in the shadow of the wire by a Calumet Farm runner. He’ll be double tough next time out at a square price.

Thoroughbred racing offered up super-hot action this weekend, and it’s just the start of things to come. – Saratoga offered up the (G-2) Amsterdam, the (G-2) Bowling Green, (G-1) Vanderbilt Stakes, and the much talked about (G-2)  Jim Dandy.  – As if this super powerful Saturday wasn’t enough, Monmouth Park rolled in a Sunday card battling all that Mother Nature could dish out. Neither rain or snow, or a sloppy sealed track could stop the action as they presented the  (G-2) Monmouth Cup, (G-3) Oceanport Stakes, the (G-3) Molly Pitcher, the (G-3) Matchmaker Stakes, and the crown jewel of the day with the (G-1) Haskell Invitational. – As we chat and discuss what could have been and brag a bit about our big score. Rest assured the racing season is far from over and the best is yet to come ! – In the meantime, you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for some runners who didn’t get the kindest trips. Just follow them right back, and a big payday could be just around the corner. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com !

Saratoga

7/28/16 – Race #6 – #9 – 1 mile on the turf

#9 – King of Spades = Florent Geroux was far  back with slow fractions. He came rolling lkate in the lane to catch the eyes of handicappers far and wide. Fresh off a maiden win and maybe a little more ground could be in his future. Either way, if he finds a way to stay in contact with the field he may be one to get some good payback.

Saratoga

7/30/16 – Race #1 – #3 – 5 1/2f on the turf

#3 – El Talento = Johnny V aboard this first timer for the Pletcher barn and was bumped at the gate break and stalked just off close to the leaders. Once the rider settled his mount he had to check off heels at the 3/16 th’s pole and  still managed a solid effort for third money.

7/30/16 – Race #5 – #4 – 1 1/8 on the inner turf

#4 -Deeply Valued = Irad Ortiz aboard this lightly raced son of Kitten’s Joy. This was an impressive win for the Chad Brown barn and deserves a playback as he’ll be moving up the ladder. Team Brown had this guy cranked up and Ortiz just sat back and enjoyed the ride.

7/30/16 – Race #9 – #1 – 6f on the dirt

#1 – Anchor Down = Jose Ortiz had the call for Todd Pletcher and was coming off a 49 day layoff and turning back from a string of mile of races to go six panels. Now he has two starts with two ITM finishes at this distance, but this race looked like they have something in mind later in the season. – He was bumped soundly at the start and just mailed it in from there. – I can’t wait to him return to the races as his works were strong coming in and a little bad luck dampened his day.

Monmouth

7/31/16 – Race #10 – #6 – 1 1/16 on the dirt

#6 – Birdatthewire = Victor Lebron had the call and hesitated strongly going into the starting gate. This was her second start off a brief layoff and all systems looked go. – Maybe she didn’t favor the track as it was her first effort over the slop. She exited a beaten favorite in the (G-1) Princess Rooney, and the drop in class had heavily backed at the windows. – Give her a fast strip and the outcome may be a whole new game.

7/31/16 – Race #12 – #2 – 1 1/8 on the dirt

#2 – Sunny Ridge = Nik Juarez had the call and his mount was 2/2 with wins over the course. He also owned two nice second place finishes on a soft track. – Go back and really watch the race closely. He may not have beaten the fast closing Exaggerator on his favorite type of track,  but he was behind a wall of horses at the top of the lane with no place to go. Once they squared away for the stretch the drive the tempo quickened and he had angle out and found late energy to finish a game third. – Maybe this level was a notch above his liking,  but play this one back with full confidence if he finds himself in a (G-2) or (G-3) effort. – Go back to the Delta Jackpot and you see him rolling late in the lane getting beat by Exaggerator.
