She’s a stone cold closer and the added ground should be welcome. She’ll be in high gear turning for home. #4 Toinette is a daughter of Scat Daddy for trainer Neil Drysdale and Rafael Bejarano. She is 1 for 1 at Del Mar and gets added distance. This is her 2nd start of the year and is 5 for 6 with wins on the green. She’ll be stalking the speed and make a big run around the far turn. BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Bast / #7 – Inspiressa / #2 – Comical

#5 Bast is a two yr old daughter of Uncle Mo for trainer Bob Baffert winning 25% with Drayden Van Dyke in the driver’s seat. They add blinkers today and that yields a 35% win clip for the barn. She was off slow last out and came flying four wide in the lane closing stoutly. The blinkers should keep her focused and stretching out in distance should be a real bonus. The rider and trainer have been five for five the past two weeks and owns a sharp work to have her ready. #7 Inspiressa hails from the barn of Peter Eurton with Joe Talamo in the irons. This daughter of Commissioner wins 33% with his firsters and she did not disappoint. She was forced out in the G2 Sorrento with 1st Lasix and second time Lasix gets a 29% win clip for the barn. She takes her game to the next level and I’m looking for a big effort. #2 Comical comes from the Doug O’Neill barn with Norberto Arroyo. 3rd off the shelf and this speedy gal should be dangerous with a new rider today. She should have a garden trip just off the leader and take over the engine down the backstretch. O’Neill wins 17% with his sprinters.

BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – Pretty Gal / #7 – Cambodia / #4 – Juno

#6 – Pretty Gal = Mike Smith in the irons for Paulo Lobo. Smith wins (20%) with his turf runners and this daughter of Harlan’s Holiday is cutting back from 1 1/8 – 1 1/16. She drops in class from the G1 Gamely and could track from the back of the pack looking to make a sustained late rally. She is 6/10 ITM on the sod and is in the right hands today. #7 – Cambodia = Draden Van Dyke for Thom Proctor and they bring a daughter of War Front to post making her second off the layoff. She ships in from Parx and Proctor wins (21%) with a new face in the barn. She is 8/8 ITM on the green and can play the role of an up-close stalker. #4 – Juno = Gary Stevens is the pilot for Neil Drysdale and he wins (23%) on the weeds. She can dictate the pace and lose the field if left alone. She is 7/10 ITM on the greensward, and since getting Lasix three back she’s been knocking on the door.

Belmont Day Recap – Ed Meyer

Ed Meyer provides his recap of the stakes-filled Belmont card from June 11, 2016.

The (G-1) Acorn Stakes – One mile on the dirt

There was a solid group of six who went to post and the big chalk was the incredible Cathryn Sophia. All of these gals glimmer in their own right, but here is one you’ll want to keep on your watch list for future racing.

Go Maggie Go – This daughter of Ghostzapper has done very little wrong and comes to the races from the Dale Romans bran. This was her worst finish in her brief career (4th) and I’m looking forward to her races down the road. She has two 1 1/8 races under her belt and looks to be finding herself with every race. She responded well to the rider’s commands and looks like this race is just a stepping stone for bigger things to come.

The (G-1) Ogden Phipps Stakes – 1 1/16 on the dirt

Seven fillies and mares took to the track led by Curalina who was the public favorite this day.

Sheer Drama – This daughter of Burning Roma doesn’t have to take her track with her. She is consistent and shows tactical ability at all distances. She lunged at the start this day and was wide before trying to uncork a bid. – This race is a “toss out” and handicapper’s beware. This young lady is going to blossom into a real monster with a little racing luck.

The (G-1) Just a Game Stakes – One mile on the turf

A field of thirteen fillies and mares assembled and with a field this size you may have to go back and watch the replay three or four more times to get the correct read. Here are a couple of gals who will should be on the radar screen for handicappers down the line.

Faufiler – Drayden Van Dyke was aboard for Graham Motion, and both rider and trainer are well versed on the greensward. This daughter of Galileo is a stone cold closer. As long as there’s a solid pace she’ll come rolling from the clouds. In time I think we’ll see her a few strides closer to the pace setters, and that will make double dangerous to pick off runners late in the lane. She mainly has travelled a flat mile, but her breeding suggests she may enjoy added ground. After shipping across the pond from France, she appears to be getting better with every start.

Recepta – She has a late punch that could knock down the champ at any oval. John Velasquez was in the irons this day, and she did very little wrong except come up a bit short nearing the wire. She’s well traveled and merits respect anywhere she’ll run. Her best efforts may range from 1 mile – 1 1/8 on the turf. – Things look very bright for the future.

The (G-1) Metropolitan Handicap – One mile on the dirt

Frosted – Just like a well-aged wine I think this runner will only improve with time. The time figures from every publication are off the charts and he dismissed the “Dubai-Jinx” after getting beat at Meydan and putting on one of the best shows of his career. His late summer-fall campaign will be one to behold if all goes well, and right about when the Breeders’ Cup frenzy is at a fever pitch this will be one of the runners we’ll all be talking about.

The  (G-1) Manhattan Stakes – 1 1/4 on the inner turf

Nine runners went to post and the public made Flintshire from the Chad Brown barn the public choice at the windows.

Flintshire (GB) – This world traveler from the Chad Brown barn had the services of one of the best turf riders in the game with Javier Castellano. – Her passport is stamped in Hong Kong, France, Dubai, and the United States. He missed by a 1/4 length in the 2014 edition of the Breeders’ Cup Turf, and this son of Dansili looked like he has yet to find his best gear. – One thing is for certain, every time he takes to the track he will be one of the tough guys to contend with, and if this race is any indication I can’t wait until we see him back on the weeds.

The (G-1) Belmont Stakes – 1 1/2 – The Test of Champions

As the media missed an opportunity to see Nyquist return for some payback from his Preakness loss, and the rumors swirled around Kent Desormeaux for personal problems. The fans we’re treated to a full field of thirteen runners and in the end  one incredible finish for the Triple Crown.

Destin – This son of Giant’s Causeway has the look of maturing colt at the right time. Add in some well deserved rest and a plan for the later part of the year and we’ll have one tough cookie going to post. – Take nothing away from the fast closing effort of the winner Creator who received a well timed ride from the ultra-talented Irad Ortiz Jr. – Looking ahead, I see a runner with tactical ability who will be feared as a front end presence or stalking just off the hot pace. He should probably find his best races in 1 1/16 – 1 1/8 events. His tactical style fits like a glove and this kind of ability plays well on any oval. By the time Breeders’ Cup is in full view, he’ll be one of the major players on everyone’s tickets.

BetPTC.com – Horses to Watch – 10/12/15

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

At the time of this entry there are 18 days and six hours until Breeders’ Cup. You can probably guess this handicapper is targeting selections to be filtered down as we draw closer. – The sweltering heat of summer has been replaced with the cool autumn air. As the wind gently blows through the trees, you start to notice the slightest foliage color changes from brilliant green to gold, brown, and deep red. The fall racing season is upon, and there is no better time to be a handicapper. – Be sure to take a closer look at the runners listed below, as they may hold the key to the winner’s circle next time they are entered. – Best of luck !

Belterra Park – 10/8/15 – Race #7 – #1 – 5 1/2f on the dirt

#1 – Stetson Gal = John McKee was in the irons for Tom Drury who was winning at a white-hot 61% for the meet.  His filly broke a little slow and hustled quickly along the rail to get into perfect striking position. – After chatting with Mr. Drury, he felt she needed a cleaner start and she’ll benefit greatly next time out. His plans were to run her at Turfway Park on the poly track, and this is one you won’t want to miss.

Belterra Park – 10/8/15 – Race #7 – #7 – 5 1/2f on the dirt

#7 – Chatter = Geovany Garcia was aboard for the Jeff Greenhill barn. She drifted out at the start costing her precious ground as they were sprinting 5 1/2. – Once she got her feet under her, a sustained rally was produced to run down Miss So So. – She didn’t look settled, and weaved in and out down the lane as the leader switched off the rail to the center of the track. – Call this a “key race” to watch as two runners who finished just off the winner ran a perfect race. – Look for this gal at Mahoning Valley, or Turfway Park. Team Greenhill spots runners where they need to be, and he does quite well on the travel.

Belterra Park – 10/10/15 – Race #5 – #5 – 8f on the dirt

#5 – Good Time Rambles = Azael Deleon was the pilot and his mount went right to his knees at the start compromising his chances at showing his best ability. At the 3/8th’s pole he started a powerful rally to come up a bit short right at the wire. – A cleaner start should have this runner in a good position turning for home.

Keeneland – 10/7/15 – Race #7 -#10 – 6 /12f on the dirt

#10 – Carina Mia = Julien Leparoux was aboard for Bill Mott on this first time starter. She broke alertly and set the pace going three deep from the #10 post. Once she opened clear, she dropped over to the rail and saved ground. She fought gamely down the lane, but the salty fractions may have taken a little out of the tank to get bested nearing the wire. – She did everything right and just didn’t get her picture taken. Mott will have her ready as the second time out should have her ready to roll.

Keeneland – 10/10/15 – Race #9 – #3 – (G-1) 1 1/8th on the turf

#3 – Miss Temple City = Drayden Van Dyke was aboard for Graham Motion, and this team can be awfully tough when they come together on the turf. Van Dyke is quietly becoming one of the best turf riders in the country. She settled out nicely and did everything right until his mount was forced to steady when the real running began at the 3/16th’s pole. – Give him clear sailing and he’ll give a better account of himself down the lane.

Belmont Park – 10/10/15 – Race #1 – #6 – 6 1/2f on the dirt

#6 – Mister Popsicle = “Jersey” Joe Bravo up for David Jacobson. Bravo’s mount broke awkwardly at the start, and chased the pace setters while going four wide at the 1/4 pole. – I think any smoother trip could move him right into the winner’s circle next time out.

Belmont Park – 10/10/15 – Race #5 – #5 – 1 1/16 on the turf

#5 – Summer Candy = Elvis Trujillo aboard this first timer for the Christophe Clement barn. He was bumped at the start, and forced to take up briefly. As he was trying to settle his mount he was forced to go four wide and offered up a late kick that showed interest down the lane. He finished 6th on this day, but good things are coming very soon for this colt.
