Race #8 – The G1 Test – 7f – 5:06 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Royal Charlotte / #2 – Bellafina / #3 – Covfefe

#5 Royal Charlotte is a daughter of Cairo Prince for Chad Brown who is winning 21% with Javier Castellano in the irons. She’s a perfect 4 for 4 and gets added ground with a field loaded with speed. She is stepping up, and Castellano stalked and powered right past in the G3 Victory Ride last out. The faster they go the better she’ll like it. #2 Bellafina is a daughter of Quality Road with Flavien Prat coming in from the left coast. She’s been off 3 months and backs up to a distance where she’s a perfect 2 for 2. Her early foot should allow her to be right on the engine and Prat wins 25% with early speedrunners. #3 Covfefe comes in for trainer Brad Cox and Joel Rosario in the saddle. They ship in from CD as a beaten favorite and Cox wins 31% looking for payback. Rosario is an excellent reinsman and should send right from the gate break. She has a solid work at CD and that should have her ready to strut her stuff.

Race #9 – The G1 Whitney – 1 1/8 – 5:46 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #8 – Preservationist / #6 – McKinzie / #4 – Thunder Snow

#8 Preservationist is a son of Arch for James Jerkins and Junior Alvarado. This is his 3rd off the layoff where the barn wins 17% as they seek his 4th straight win. Cuts back in distance and his form cycle is hard to argue. Alvarado fits like a glove and should be laying just off the speed. #6 McKinzie is a son of Street Sense for Bob Baffert and Mike Smith. Been off 56 days and was blocked and forced to steady in the G1 Met. A perfect stalker with solid works coming in from Del Mar. He was a beaten favorite last out and Baffert comes back to win 24% on this move. #4 Thunder Snow hails from the barn of Saeed bin Suroor with Christophe Soumillon in the irons. He’s a hard knocker who’s been off 56 days. He always gives a strong effort but falls a bit short. He worked 7f at Belmont to prepare and will come calling late in the lane. If he wins it would not be any surprise in this solid field.

Mountaineer

Race #8 – The G3 West Virginia Derby – 1 1/8 – 5:35 pm EDT

#9 Mr. Money is a son of Goldencents and winner of the G3 Indiana Derby as he seeks his 4th straight win for Bret Calhoun. Gabriel Saez in the irons and worked a bullet off his last win. He should be a major pace player and be hard to handle for a track that plays kindly to speed. #8 Math Wizard was rolling late in the G3 Indiana Derby. Florent Geroux picks up the assignment making the 3rd off the layoff move. His bullet work coming out of the Indiana Derby is a strong sign. He will come running late and Geroux will push the button just at the right time. #1 Chess Chief comes in for trainer Dallas Stewart and Miguel Mena. 3rd off the layoff and was rolling for a minor award in the G3 Indiana Derby. Love his work over the deep CD oval and plays the role of a longe range closer. If the pace falls apart he’ll be a major player.

BetPTC.com Selections / #3 – Stonesintheroad / #4 – Forgotten Hero / #2 – Maiden Beauty

#3 Stonesintheroad is a daughter of Bustin Stones. Rajiv Maragh stays aboard looking for this 3rd straight about this talented filly. Trainer Jeremiah Englehardt wis off to the races winning 17% and 26% with last race winners. #4 Forgotten Hero is a speedy gal by Mission Impazible. Mike Luzzi in the irons for John Toscano. She’s going to be forwardly placed but if someone give her the press she’ll get the acid test moving forward. Her last effort was all that and trip to the winner’s circle and Luzzi wins 13% with speed ball runners. #2 Maiden Beauty can layoff the pace and make a bid. She is on the turn back from a mile and I like the idea of mixing her surroundings up a bit. BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Quip / #7 – Copper Town / #3 – Breaking Lucky

#5 Quip is a son of Distorted Humor from the Rodolphe Brisset barn. Keep an eye on this lad as he’s worked with some of the biggest names in racing. Jose Ortiz in the driver’s seat and has been off for 9 months since the Preakness. His works at Payson have been solid and the barn is 44% ITM off long range layoffs. He faced the tough guys last year and cuts back in distance preparing for his spring campaign. #7 Copper Town is owned by Win Star Farm and China Horse Club International for Todd Pletcher. Javier Castellano in the irons and he’s been rolling at a 22% clip to the winner’s circle. I think they’re still trying to find the true meaning of this colt and makes a 2nd off the layoff move since a troubled trip in the gate as a beaten favorite. #3 Breaking Lucky has Luis Saez in the irons for George Weaver. Another runner still trying to find himself and that’s what makes spring at GP attractive. Look for a midpack break second time out this year.

#2 – Hollywood Star = Robby Albarado in the saddle for Dale Romans. 2-yr-old son of Malibu Moon and won his Mdn start at CD and came back to run a game effort in the G2 Saratoga Special. His numbers are strong and exits off a sparkling work at CD. I’m thinking there may some distance questions down the road but the 1 1/16 in definitely in his scope. #1 – Ten City =Jack Gilligan aboard for Kenny McPeek and the trainer was quoted as saying “this may be one of the most talented runners he has trained.” – His last effort at Ellis was surprising as a beaten chalk who goes from 7f to 1 1/16. Should get a good stalking trip close to the rail. #7 – Flameaway = Julien Leparoux in the irons for Mark Casse. The barn has faced some tough Euro-turf runners. This son of Scat Daddy is 2/2, and the distance should not be a problem. I went back and watched his last replay and it may be better than the results may tell. I like his chances today.

Her dam Ideal has 4 starts with 4 turf winners and is making her 3rd off the layoff move and adding distance. The race goes through this filly if you want the winner. #5 – Starship Jubilee = 2nd off the layoff move and cuts back in distance from 1 3/8. This is a son of Kitten’s Joy and gets Lasix shipping in from Group 1 company in Germany. He is 8/13 ITM on turf and faced some very tough Euro turfers. BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – Deauville / #8 – Mondialiste / #1 – World Appeal

#6 – Deauville = Jamie Spencer for Aidan O’Brien. They bring a son of Galileo exiting the Arlington Million as a beaten favorite. Spencer takes over for Ryan Moore and they cut back from 1 1/4 – 1 mile and a shot at a qualifying spot for the Breeders’ Cup. He’s run well on this side of the pond and lesser distance could play into his plans. #8 – Mondialiste = Jose Ortiz in the irons for David O’Meara. 1/1 at Woodbine and the Lasix sure helped his causes in the past. He is 9/16 ITM at the distance and been off since York in late August. #1 – World Appeal = John Velasquez for Mark Casse and exits a strong win in the G1 FourStarDave.
