Belmont Park

Race #4 – The G1 Vosburgh – 6f – 2:35 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #4 – Imperial Hint / #6 – Firenze Fire / #2 – American Power

#4 Imperial Hint comes to post for Luis Carvajal and Javier Castellano.  A few races back he ran a game effort in the Dubai Golden Shaheen and four months later romped home in the G1 Vanderbilt. He should attend the pace from the break and looks to take this race two years running. #6 Firenze Fire is 3rd off the shelf for Jason Servis who is winning 38% at the meet. Irad Ortiz retains the call and scores 29% teaming up with Servis. He’s a closer who loves the oval and Ortiz scores with 22% of his late runners. #2 American Fire is a son of Power Broker for Linda Rice and Jose Ortiz. He seeks his 4th straight win and gets the acid test moving up the class ladder. Minor awards are not out of the question.

Race #9 – The G3 Pilgrim – 1 1/16 on turf – 5:16 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #2 – No Word / #7 – Structor / #6 – Our Country

#2 No Word hails from the barn of Todd Pletcher with Jose Ortiz in the irons. This son of Silent Name (JPN) was ultra impressive in his maiden win after getting bumped and jostled about. Ortiz gave a picture perfect ride that day and his dam Listen A.P. has 8 starters, 7 winners, and 6 turf winners. #7 Structor is a Chad Brown trainee with Irad Ortiz in the saddle. They go to the winner’s circle 25% as a team this year. The barn must be respected as they win 25% with 2nd grass efforts. The major danger. #6 Our Country comes from the barn of George Weaver and Manny Franco is the reinsman. Always brings a strong closing kick and was a beaten favorite in the G3 With Anticipation after stumbling at the start. Weaver wins at a 25% clip with runners looking for payback.

Race #10 – The G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup – 1 1/4 – 5:49 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #2 – Code of Honor / #1 – Tacitus / #4 – Preservationist

#2 Code of Honor is a son of Noble Mission who is 7 for 8 ITM lifetime for Shug McGaughey. John Velasquez gets the call as they are 2nd off the layoff from a brief freshening. His victory in the G1 Travers was awesome and he is a closing type who should spot his place in this compact field of five. Johnny V has been having quite the year and winning this race in the Farish colors should cap off a great summer. #1 Tacitus is a son of Tapit for Bill Mott and Jose Ortiz. 3rd off, and a beaten favorite last out should have this gutsy colt ready to turn the tables on the top choice. #4 Preservationist is a speedy son of Arch who should provide a quick pace. He is 3 for 3 ITM over the Belmont surface and Junior Alvarado will be keen on the lead as the gates break. He is a major threat.  Short but quality field in the JCGC.

Parx Race #9 – The G3 Gallant Bob – 6f – 4:14 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #10 – Firenze Fire / #1 – Still Having Fun / #4 – Engage

#10 Firenze Fire comes to post for Jason Servis with Irad Ortiz in the saddle. This is the 2nd start off a brief layoff and takes a plunge down the class ladder. He was rolling late in the G1 H.A. Jerkins and bumped soundly getting forced wide. There is plenty of speed to set him up and trainer Jason Servis is winning at a 23% clip. #1 Still Having Fun is a son of Old Fashioned for Timothy Keefe. Joel Rosario in the irons making his 2nd start off the layoff move. He won the G2 Woody Stephens and got caught wide in the G1 H.A. Jerkins and should relish the turnback in distance. #4 Engage comes to post for Chad Brown and has the services of Jose Ortiz in the saddle. 3rd time off the shelf and has two solid preps coming into this race. He always fires and Ortiz fits him like a glove.

Race #10 – The G1 Cotillion – 1 1/16 – 4:55 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections /#2 – Monomoy Girl / #5 -Separation of Powers / #7 -Midnight Bisou

#2 – Monomoy Girl should be a heavy favorite in this event for the Brad Cox barn. She is looking for her 6th in a row and sports good early foot. Florent Geroux in the driver’s seat and he’s looking to keep her record a perfect six for six. She’s gonna be tough to beat. #5 Separation of Powers is a daughter of Candy Ride for the Chad Brown barn. Jose Ortiz has the call and she is a strong stalking closer. I see her getting a garden trip rating behind the speed and she’ll make a  run at the top of the lane. #7 Midnight Bisou comes in for trainer Steve Asmussen with Mike Smith aboard. She was a beaten favorite in the G1 Alabama and cuts back in distance today. Asmussen wins 25% on the beaten chalk angle and she is showing good morning works over the deep Oklahoma training track.

Race #11 – The G1 Pennsylvania Derby – 1 1/8 – 5:45 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #8 – McKinzie / #10 – Bravazo / #7 – Mr. Freeze

#8 McKinzie is a son of Street Sense for trainer Bob Baffert. He is 4 for 4 ITM and exits the G2 San Felipe and been on the shelf for 6 months. He has some speedy works in California and Baffert wins 34% with his shippers. #10 Bravazo is a son of Awesome Again for D. Wayne Lukas. Luis Saez in the saddle and exits a solid trip in the G1 Travers, This is a 3rd off the shelf move and he owns some solid works over the deep Churchill oval. He’ll be rolling late in the lane. #7 Mr. Freeze comes from the barn of Dale Romans with Robby Albarado in the irons. This son of To Honor and Serve is 4 for 4 ITM and likes to launch a late bid. He’s been off for 49 days and shows some very nice morning works at CD. He should be a very good value play and his price may have you tossing him into your exotics.

Race #7 – The G1 Personal Ensign – 1 1/8 – 2:59 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #1 Abel Tasman / #6 Elate / #4 Wow Cat

#1 Abel Tasman is a daughter of Quality Road for trainer Bob Baffert. “Money Man” Mike Smith in the irons looking to duplicate their effort in last year’s G1 Coaching Club Oaks. There’s plenty of speed in the field and she has a strong late punch. She’s been on the shelf for two months and Baffert wins 24% with fresh legs coming back to the races. I’m looking for a big rally at the top of the lane. #6 Elate comes to post for Bill Mott. She is two for two ITM at the Spa and makes a 2nd off the layoff move shipping in from Del Mar. Jose Ortiz in the saddle as he looks to turn the tables on “Abel” from last year’s meeting. Her works have been solid over the deep Oklahoma training track. Ortiz will know just when to push the button. #4 Wow Cat is a daughter of Lookin At Lucky for trainer Chad Brown. This Chilean bred was bumped soundly leaving the starting gate last out as a beaten favorite in the G3 Shuvee. Overall, it was a perfect prep and John Velasquez will have her as a major player on the lead.

Race #10 – The G1 Sword Dancer – 1 1/2 on the turf – 4:49 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #10 Sadler’s Joy / #6 Bigger Picture / #4 Hi Happy

#10 Sadler’s Joy is a son of Kitten’s Joy for trainer Thom Albertrani. Javier Castellano in the saddle and is 4 for 5 ITM over the course. He made a strong late rally last out in the G2 Bowling Green and gets more distance today. Look for a sustained rally as he comes calling at the top of the stretch. #6 Bigger Picture comes to post for trainer Mike Maker. This is his third off the shelf move and has Irad Ortiz in the irons. He was 6 wide in the G2 Bowling Green and Ortiz is one of the best finishers in the game. Look for a big time effort today. #4 Hi Happy is a son of Pure Prize from the Todd Pletcher barn. John Velasquez in the saddle and was a beaten favorite in the G2 Bowling Green. All three selections exit this key race.  This was his first effort in a month and Pletcher wins 25% with beaten favorites. They look to turn the tables today.

Race #11 – The G1 Travers – 1 1/4 – 5:44 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #9 Good Magic / #5 Vino Rosso / #8 Mendelssohn

#9 Good Magic is a talented son of Curlin for the Chad Brown barn. Jose Ortiz in the driver’s seat and they are making their 2nd start off the layoff. He owns a bullet work in preparation as he is maturing into quite a special runner. He has a talented reinsman in the saddle and looks to be finding himself. Look for a very strong account of his talents today. #5 Vino Rosso comes in for the Todd Pletcher barn. He’s a son of Curlin and was a beaten favorite in the G2 Jim Dandy showing strong signs. Toss out the Triple Crown races and you’ll see a runner who is deceivingly good. If you get anywhere near double digit odds he’ll be tough not to use. Look for a solid effort against a very nice field. #8 Mendelssohn is a solid son of Scat Daddy for trainer Aiden O’Brien. Ryan Moore stays in the saddle and was a beaten favorite in the G2 Dwyer. He still gave a good account of himself and is capable of much more. O’Brien thinks enough of him to have him in this talented field and that’s good enough for me to use in exotics. I think we’ll see a rejuvenated runner ready to give an A + effort.

BetPTC.com Selections = #5 – Off Limits / #2 – Sassy Little Lila / #1 – Celestine

#5 – Off Limits = Joel Rosario for the Chad Brown barn and the race is filled with plenty of speed. This daughter of Mastercraftsman is a stone cold closer and with a salty pace expected he should benefit greatly. He is 2/3 ITM at Belmont and the barn is 13/26 the last 14 days. Look for a big run at the top of the lane. #2 – Sassy Little Lila = She has a blast of speed to be respected. A daughter of Artie Schiller and Julien Leparoux in the irons for Brad Cox. She faced the boys last out in the G1 4 Star Dave. – If she grabs the lead she could be a tough customer this day. #1 – Celestine = Irad Ortiz aboard for Clement and draws the rail with plenty of early foot. She is 3/4 ITM over the course and exits the G1 Just a Game. Plenty of tactical speed under a talented reinsman.

This son of Freud won impressively last out at Monmouth and has the services of Paco Lopez who wins with (25%) of early style runners. #1 – Tom’s Ready = 2nd start off the layoff for the Dallas Stewart barn and draws the rail with Joel Rosario in the irons. This son of More Than Ready is a solid closing type and going from a sprint to a route the barn wins (18%).

9/23/17

Race #10 – The G1 Cotillion – 1 1/16 – 4:55 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections = #9 – Abel Tasman / #10 – Salty / #5 – It Tiz Well

#9 – Abel Tasman = The Kentucky Oaks winner brings Bob Baffert and Mike Smith to post. The daughter of Quality Road is cutting back from 1 1/4 and is looking to make it 4-in-a-row. Her morning works are sparkling and the connections are always tough when the money is on the line. Look for a stoute closing effort and the “Money Man” to get rolling late in the lane. #10 – Salty = Tyler Gafflione for Mark Casse. She is 6/7 ITM lifetime and always comes calling late. Look for more of the same as this talented young rider can get to the winner’s circle with a little racing luck. – #5 – It Tiz Well = Drayden Van Dyke for Jerry Hollendorfer and this daughter of Arch is a solid pace player. She should be up close and stalking looking to move just at the right time.

Race #11 – The G1 Pennsylvania Derby – 1 1/8 – 5:45 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections = #4 – West Coast / #8 – Irish War Cry / #5 – Irap

#4 – West Coast = This son of Flatter is starting to show the signs of a real monster on the track. Bob Baffert and Smith team up looking for 5-in-a-row. After his impressive win in the G1 Travers, he has the full attention of handicappers. He cuts back from 1 1/4 and the trainer wins (35%) off a last race win. His race to lose. #8 – Irish War Cry = This son of Curlin should be forwardly placed under Fergal Lynch for Graham Motion. Ever since the Derby he is starting to look his old self but may be catching a tough guy in West Coast this day. He’ll bring his “A” game and that has to be considered before hitting the windows. #5 – Irap = Ever since winning the Ohio Derby he has gained respect. They are cutting back from 1 1/4 and the lesser distance may fit him well. Mario Gutierrez for Doug O’Neill and they are winning (20%) the past few months as a team. A perfect stalker who can be a major player at the top of the lane.

BetPTC.com Horses to Watch – 9/2/17

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

When the Travers results hit the history books you know the summer racing season is nearing the finish. The days of sun and fun are slowly creeping toward fall racing and the Breeders’ Cup. – When handicappers see Labor Day on the calendar, it’s time to start thinking Keeneland and Fall Stars weekend. But hold your horses! – There’s plenty of summer action in the plans and wagering opportunities await. While you’re making your plans to hit the track, keep these runners in mind. They may have something more to offer and reward you the next time they hit the track. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com!

Saratoga

8/15/17

Race #6 – Mdn Claiming – 1 mile on the turf

#5 – New Canaan = Jose Ortiz in the saddle for Linda Rice (23%), and they were dropping in class and going from 5 1/2f – 1 mile. She was sent off the odds-on chalk and was forced to check up sharply at the break. Sometimes a bad start can end the race before it begins, and this race needs to be kept in mind as a very good excuse.

Race #7 – The Yaddo Stakes – 1 1/16 on the turf

#7 – Ack Nasty = Joel Rosario in the saddle for Chad Brown. This gal was making her 2nd off the layoff (21%) and 5/6 ITM at the Spa. She stalked at the rear of the field and was blocked badly down the lane this day.

Race #8 – Seek the Ante Stakes – 6 1/2f

#7 – Newport Breeze = Jose Ortiz in the irons for Peter Eurton. They were coming off a win at Del Mar moving up the class ladder. Ortiz had her moving around the far turn this day and looked to be running “green” as a youngster sometimes does. She was forced to settle for 2nd money this day and she’ll only benefit from this effort moving forward.

Saratoga

8/26/17

Race #10 – The G1 Sword Dancer – 1 1/2 on the turf

#5 – Money Multiplier = Javier Castellano aboard this son of Lookin At Lucky making his 2nd start of the season. He was 3/3 ITM at the Spa and probably on the same plan as last year heading into the Breeders’ Cup. He’ll most probably move to Belmont putting the finishing touches on his plans. This plan looks exactly like 2016 and could be a good time to be on the watch. He swung out 6 wide at the top of the lane and started to pick up ground getting bested at the finish. This race is a good sign of things to come.

Race #11 – G1 Travers – 1 1/4

#11 – Gunnevera = Edgard Zayas aboard for Antonio Sano. This son of Dialed In was making his second off a break from the Triple Crown run. He scored easily in a $100k stake at GP and owns a bullet work coming into this race. He was bumped hard at the start and rebounded nicely looking the major danger. The freshening and maturing may be coming at the right time for a fall campaign. He looked very good this day but caught a tiger named West Coast.

Race #13 – Mdn Claiming – 1 1/16 on the turf

#2 – Admirals Cove = Manny Franco in the driver’s seat for David Donk. This son of Hat Trick has been off for 3 months and dropping down in class (20%). – He stumbled badly at the start and finished with a good late kick showing promise for his next effort.

TRAVERS DAY 2017

Saratoga

Race #6 – The G1 Personal Ensign – 1 1/8 – 2:23 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #2 – Songbird / #3 – Going for Broke / #4 – Forever Unbridled

#2 – Songbird = Daughter of Medaglia d’ Oro is 2/2 at the Spa and an impressive 14/14 ITM. Mike Smith aboard for Jerry Hollendorfer and she is making her 3rd start off the layoff (22%) and left California off a very sharp work going 47.1. She cuts back in distance and is 2/2 ITM going 9f. Smith travels in to ride this majestic gal and she can set the pace or lay right behind the leader. If she brings her “A” game she’ll be tough to stop. #3 – Going for Broke = This daughter of Blame is a stone cold closer with one of the strongest finishing riders with Irad Ortiz. She is 3/3 ITM at Saratoga coming from the Chad Brown barn. She’s run second to Songbird and knows how to get rolling late in the lane. The barn wins (32%) going from a sprint to a route, and last out she ran 7f closing late. #4 – Forever Unbridled = She exits a G2 win at CD and is 5/5 ITM going this distance. She’s been away for 2 months from the races and owns a bullet work coming into this affair as she was a 3rd place runner last year.

Race #7 – G1 Ballerina Stakes – 7f – 2:59 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #3 – Paulassilverlining / #4 – By the Moon / #6 – Distinta

#3 – Paulassilverlining = This daughter of Ghostzapper is looking for her 5th straight. She is 3/5 ITM at the Spa and 5/6 ITM going the distance. This is her 2nd off the layoff where Brown wins (22%) and (27%) off the last race win. She has a perfect stalking style and Jose Ortiz is having a super year (23%). She is maturing nicely and has the style that fits the race. #4 – By the Moon = She is a daughter of Indian Charlie and has the services of Rajiv Maragh. He is a very strong finishing rider and her stalking trip can be accentuated with a good late punch. She is 5/5 ITM at Saratoga and has some good works and an excellent sprint race to build upon. #6 – Distinta = John Velasquez in the irons for Todd Pletcher (33%) and she comes in from GP. Her races have been solid but she’ll be making a step up the class ladder.

BetPTC.com

Race #8 – The G1 Allen Jerkins Stakes – 7f – 3:35 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #7 – Coal Front / #9 – American Anthem / #1 – Practical Joke

#7 – Coal Front = Son of Stay Thirsty is a perfect 3/3 and looks to add another for the Todd Pletcher barn. He moved up in class off a maiden win in the G2 Amsterdam and was very game when the real running began. Lightly raced and has few things to pick apart. He’s pretty good right now, and we’ll know if he’s ready for that next level after Saturday. #9 – American Anthem = Bob Baffert trainee has been a tough customer and he is 2/2 at the distance. Ever since the SA Derby, he has matured into a very nice colt. He’s rolled off 2 straight going 7f and Mike Smith is his pilot. Baffert is 2/2 ITM at the Spa and wins (29%) off a graded win. #1 – Practical Joke = 2/2 with wins at the Spa and had a troubled trip in the Haskell. Joel Rosario for Chad Brown and they make a cut back in distance from 1 1/8 – 7f where the barn wins (35%). Ever since the Kentucky Derby, he is training well and running strong. The rail is a plus and the trainer knows how to bring them ready.

Race #9 – The G1 Forego – 7f – 4:12 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #10 – Drefong / #6 – Mind Your Biscuits / #2 – Ross

#10 – Drefong = A son of Gio Ponti comes to post for the Bob Baffert barn. Mike “Money-Man” Smith was in the saddle when he ducked into the gap and lost his rider. This is his 2nd start of the 2017 season and the plan looks to return to the left coast for the Breeders’ Cup with a win. He is a monster sprinter and won going 7 panels in the Kings Bishop at the Spa. Smith is a great judge of pace and he looks to be the one to beat as they come back to notch a trip to the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar. #6 – Mind Your Biscuits = He came back off a win in the Gr.2 Golden Shaheen at Meydan and rolled in the G2 Belmont Sprint. He is maturing into a big boy and his races are showing a new dimension every trip. He’s been off for 49 days and Chad Brown will have him cranked up as he is ITM (50%) with rested runners. #2 – Ross = A bit of a wild card who is here for a reason. Andrasch Starke aboard for trainer Peter Schiergen from Germany. He exits off a 6 1/2f win at Deauville only 19 days ago and has run in group company on synthetic and turf. I’m going to use him to complete my exotics, and a price may accompany him to the starting gate.

Race #10 – G1 Sword Dancer – 1 1/2 on the turf – 4:49 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #5 – Money Multiplier / #4 – Hunter O’Riley / #2 – Bigger Picture

#5 – Money Multiplier = Javier Castellano for Chad Brown (20%). This son of Lookin At Lucky is making his 2nd start of the year and a very nice win in the G2 Monmouth. He enjoys the Spa going 3/3 ITM and last year got caught up in traffic and was forced to take up in this race last year. He should be stalking mid-pack and moving before they hit the top of the lane. #4 – Hunter O’Riley = Won the G2 Bowling Green as our pick last out to light up the board. I think there’s more in the tank and he’ll come rolling like a down bound train in the stretch. Florent Geroux stays aboard and is a come from the clouds type who would benefit from some early pace. #2 – Bigger Picture = Jose Ortiz for Mike Maker and they are making a 3rd off the layoff move (25%). He is 2/3 ITM at the Spa and is a very strong closer. Ortiz is having a great year and he wins (21%) with turf runners. They have a solid post draw and the rider knows the greensward as well as anyone.

Race #11 – The G1 Travers – 1 1/4 – 5:44 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #2 – Tapwrit / #3 – West Coast / #9 – McCraken

#2 – Tapwrit = Earlier this year he peaked too soon and his best race was the Tampa Bay Derby. He never really got a break until he went on the shelf after the Derby and had three weeks to the Belmont where he bested the field by two lengths. Once Todd Pletcher figured out this son of Tapit, he’s had a two-month break from his victory in the Belmont. He owns some solid works and the rider/trainer are 6/7 ITM the past two weeks. He looks ready and all reports are good. #3 – West Coast = Baffert / Smith team up with a son of Flatter. He is looking for his 4th straight win and was an easy winner of the Los Al Derby. They never raced him as a two -yr-old and he is getting better by the race. You can bet dollars to donuts Smith will have him in the hunt at the top of the lane. #9 – McCraken = He looked like a winner in the G1 Haskell getting nailed on the wire. His only bad race was the Derby and he is 7/8 ITM lifetime. – B.J. Hernandez in the irons once again for Ian Wilkes and do not leave this guy off your ticket. He’ll chase the leaders and make a big move about the 5/16th’s pole hitting high gear. I like his stride, and the rider is underrated. He’ll be looking for some payback after the Haskell and this is a perfect place to show his ability.
