Saratoga

Race #8 – The G2 Ballston Spa – 1 1/16 on the turf – 3:35 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #3 – Secret Message / #8 – Starship Jubilee / #2 – Fifty Five

#3 Secret Message is a daughter of Hat Trick (JPN) making her second trip off the layoff while dropping down a notch in class. She gets a rider change to Jose Ortiz who is winning 23% at the Spa. His dam Westside Singer has 2 starters, 2 winners, 1 stakes winner, and 2 turf winners to her credit. She’s a closing type and owns a bullet work while cutting back to a perfect distance. #8 Starship Jubilee ships in from Woodbine off a 56 day layoff. She is bred to relish the greensward and her works are solid. Jose Lezcano in the saddle and trainer Kevin Attard wins 18% with graded stakes. The forecast calls for sunny and dry conditions and she hasn’t seen a firm turf since January at GP. A stalker who should be just off Scottish Jig getting a garden trip. Two back she was a beaten favorite to Secret Message and they know each other well. #2 Fifty Five comes from the barn of Chad Brown with Javier Castellano winning 26% together. She is 18 for 19 ITM on the turf and the New York bred can get motoring late in the lane. Look for her at the quarter pole skimming the hedge.

Race #9 – The G1 Personal Ensign – 1 1/8 – 4:12 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #4 – Elate / #1 – Midnight Bison / #5 – Wow Cat

#4 Elate comes in for trainer Bill Mott and Jose Ortiz who are winning at 33% as a team. She is 3 for 3 ITM at the Spa and makes her 3rd off the shelf cutting back in distance. After winning the Fleur De Lis at CD she has stepped up her game. She’s been knocking heads with Midnight Bisou and has been finishing behind her. Today is her turn and look for a strong late kick with Ortiz who wins 21% with late runners. #1 Midnight Bisou is a daughter of Midnight Lute for trainer Steve Asmussen with Mike Smith in the saddle. She’s hit the board at the Spa but hasn’t been able to seal the deal. She is seeking her 6th straight win drawing the rail post into the short first turn run. Smith will get her in good shape and look for a renewed battle with Elate. #5 Wow Cat is a daughter of Lookin At Lucky for Chad Brown and John Velasquez in the irons. 2nd start of the year as she is 3 for 3 ITM at Saratoga. This gal was a beaten favorite in the G3 Shuvee and that may have been a perfect prep for today. She shows a snappy work on August 17 and faced some pretty tough gals coming into the race. She’ll be calling late in the lane.

FINALS DAYS!

Race #10 – The G1 Sword Dancer – 1 1/2 on the turf – 4:49 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Ya Primo / #8 – Channel Maker / #9 – Sadler’s Joy

#6 Ya Primo is a son of Mastercraftsman (IRE) for Chad Brown and Jose Ortiz. He gave a solid account of himself in the G2 Bowling Green first time in the states getting Lasix. Draws the rail and owns two bullet works looking to stalk the speed and turn it loose down the lane. #8 Channel Maker comes in for Bill Mott and Joel Rosario. 2nd off the layoff and was wide most of his last trip in the G2 Bowling Green. He still managed a solid 4th as the race was better than appeared on paper. He shows good works and Mott wins 22% off a beaten favorite loss. Look for a mid flight trip moving around the far turn. #9 Sadler’s Joy is a son of Kitten’s Joy for trainer Thom Albertrani and Jose Lezcano. He is 4 for 7 ITM at the Spa and makes his 2nd start of the year. It looks like the Breeders’ Cup is on his mind and was closing quick last out only to get blocked multiple times down the lane. A clean trip and a new rider may make a big difference today.

Race #11 – The G1 Travers – 1 1/4 – 5:44 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Tacitus / #7 – Mucho Gusto / #2 – Code of Honor

#6 Tacitus comes from the barn of Bill Mott and Jose Ortiz. Blinkers on today and was a beaten favorite last out where the barn comes back to win 23%. 2nd time off the layoff, and if that bullet work is any indication I think we’ll see a tough son of Tapit kicking in late. He runs solid every time and the blinkers should keep his mind on business. #7 Mucho Gusto comes from the barn of Bob Baffert with Joe Talamo in the saddle. 2nd best in the Haskell Stakes and Baffert is 1 for 1 at the Spa. He went home to Del Mar to work and comes back fresh and ready. Look for a closeup trip and Talamo wins 20% with early style runners. This son of Mucho Macho Man should be right near the engine as soon as the gates open. #2 Code of Honor hails from the barn of Shug McGaughey with John Velasquez in the saddle. He’s been off 49 days and 1 for 1 at the Spa. He cruised in the G3 Dwyer as a prep and should be right in the mix. He broke his maiden at the Spa and Johnny V knows this son of Noble Mission well. I like his work tab and Shug comes out strong on marquee days.

Belmont

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Mendelssohn / #7 – Firenze Fire / #3 – Rugbyman

Race #6 – G3 Dwyer – 1 mile – 4:36 pm EDT

#6 Mendelssohn is a son of Scat Daddy looking to get back on track in a big way. He’s looking to rebound off a dismal Kentucky Derby effort, and Aidan O’Brien retains the services of nine time Breeders’ Cup winning rider Ryan Moore. I’ll toss out the Derby for a bevy of reasons, and most importantly he caught a monster by the name of Justify. He broke his maiden in Ireland going a mile and has faced every possible surface. He gets 2nd Lasix and should make a big move getting back on track.

#7 Firenze Fire looks to bounce back from the Derby blues as well. Irad Ortiz in the saddle for Jason Servis and won the G1 Champagne last year going a mile. He likes the distance and is 2 for 3 ITM going this far, and we can expect a big closing move fresh off a 2 month layoff.

#3 Rugbyman has Jose Ortiz for Graham Motion in the driver’s seat. A lightly raced colt who broke his maiden by 14 over the track. He looked super running a closing effort in the Easy Goer and adds blinkers today.

Race #8 – G1 Belmont Oaks – 1 1/4 on the turf – 5:46 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 Toinette / #10 Mighty Scarlett / #8 Thewayiam

#5 Toinette has Flavien Prat in the saddle for Neil Drysdale. Prat wins 23% on the turf and she’s a perfect 3 for 3 on the sod. She is a daughter of Scat Daddy and will come calling late in the lane. She’s been off for two months and has four works over the Belmont turf around the dogs. Look for a mighty run against a talented field.

#10 Mighty Scarlett comes to post for Chad Brown with Jose Ortiz in the irons. She’s a daughter of Scat Daddy and is 3 for 3 ITM on the green. She had a building block effort in the G3 Wonder Again, and Ortiz wins 19% over the greensward. When he rides for Chad Brown they win 21% and this lightly raced filly is ready to start her summer campaign.

#8 Thewayiam goes to post for trainer Graham Motion with John Velasquez in the driver’s seat. She’s 8 for 10 ITM on the grass and exits a fast closing effort in the Penn Oaks getting beat as the chalk. Look for a rebound effort worthy of sealing the deal as she’ll come rolling in the final quarter mile under Johnny V.

Race #10 – The G1 Belmont Derby – 1 1/4 on the turf – 6:50 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #7 Catholic Boy / #8 Hawkish / #4 Hunting Horn

#7 Catholic Boy has Javier Castellano in the saddle aboard this son of More than Ready. He is 3 for 4 ITM on the grass and locked horns with some of the big boys. Trainer Jonathon Thomas wins 38% with graded stakes and comes in 2nd off a layoff. He won at first asking off a 3 month layoff and is looking for continued improvement rolling late in the lane.

#8 Hawkish is a son of Artie Schiller who won the G2 Penn Mile. He begins his summer campaign with Manny Franco in the saddle for James Toner. He owns a sharp work around the dogs over the Belmont weeds. Franco will uncork a rally when he gives the cue.

#4 Hunting Horn has Ryan Moore in irons for Aidan O’Brien. They bring a son of Camelot to post who won the Group 3 Hampton Court at Royal Ascot. He gets first Lasix and Ryan Moore comes to the big city to take down a nice score with a repeat effort.

BetPTC.com / Graded Stakes Preview / Ed Meyer

Belmont Race #6 – G3 Dwyer – 1 mile on the main- 4:38 pm

BetPTC.com Selections – #2 – (6-5) Battalion Runner / #3 – (7-5) Practical Joke / (#5 – (5-1) Giusseppe the Great

Battalion Runner is a good looking son of Unbridled’s Song who is 4/4 ITM lifetime. He ran a game effort in the G2 Wood Memorial finishing second to Irish War Cry. Cuts back from 1 1/8 to a mile, and makes his first start off the layoff for Todd Pletcher. The barn wins (29%) with rested runners and a couple bullet works over the course has everything looking good. Practical Joke comes in for Chad Brown exiting the Kentucky Derby. He’s been on a brief vacation for 2 months and may not have taken to the track in Louisville. Solid stalker type who plans to come calling down the lane. Giusseppe the Great is a lightly raced colt from the barn of Nick Zito. He is 4/4 ITM this year and was picking up the pieces in the G2 Woody Stephens finishing 2nd.

Race #8 – G1 Belmont Oaks – 1 1/4 on the main track – 5:46 pm

BetPTC.com Selections – #8 -(7-2) New Money Honey / #2 – (15-1) Beau Recall / #7 – (6-1) Uni / #12 – (5-2) Sistercharlie

New Money Honey is making her 2nd start off a two month layoff in the hands of Javier Castellano. Her last effort in the G3 Wonder Again showed good promise coming in fresh and ready. She showed a whole new dimesion grabbing the lead going wire-to-wire. Chad Brown is the trainer and comes back to score (27%) off a stakes win. She is 2/2 at Belmont, and you have to respect the barn on big race days. Beau Recall ships in from Santa Anita, and has the services of Flavien Prat who wins (21%) on the turf. She is conditoned by Simon Callaghan and looks to put away the bridesmaid dress and walk into the winner’s circle. By all accounts she looks to be sitting on a big effort. Uni is a daughter of More than Ready for Chad Brown / Irad Ortiz. She is coming over from France, and Brown wins (29%) with new runners in his barn. Sistercharlie has been a monster and her last race at Chantilly was a big effort in the Group 1 Prix de Diane.  I love the move to Chad Brown / John Velasquez , and there is not much you couldn’t like. Opening up at (5-2) and breaking from the #12 post is enough to send me looking for a better price. If she runs half of her last race she’ll be tough, but you’re not going to get the price you deserve. I’m leaning to the other Chad Brown runners who offer a better price.

BetPTC cash is king

Race #9 – G2 Suburban Handicap – 1 1/4 – 6:18 pm

BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – (4-5) Shaman Ghost / #5 – (8-1) Follow Me Crev / #3 – (15-1) Sunny Ridge

Shaman Ghost is shooting for three straight wins. This son of Ghostzapper was closing stoutly in the G3 Pimlico Special. 2/3 ITM at Belmont and gets an added 1/16th of a mile to target. He appears to be hitting his gear at the right time and is 4/5 at the distance. Follow Me Crev exits the G1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita and has faced some real tough guys along his journey. He sports a bullet work going 1:13 flat at Santa Anita and ships to New York for trainer Vladimir Cerin. Sunny Ridge is a son of Holy Bull and 2/2 ITM over the Belmont surface. Manny Franco in the irons for Jason Servis (33%) and they could get a piece of the pie stalking just off the speed.

Race #10 – G1 Belmont Derby – 1 1/4 on the turf – 6:50 pm

BetPTC.com Selections – #1 – (12-1) Good Samaritan / #6 – (8-1) Arlow / #5 – (5-1) Called To The Bar

Good Samaritan exits the G3 Pennine Ridge at Belmont. This son of Harlan’s Holiday has returned to the races stronger than ever in 2017. The distance should not be a problem and draws the golden rail winning at a rate of (29%). Bill Mott  is the trainer and Joel Rosario has been the only rider aboard. You’ll  see him working up the rail looking for his path at the 1/4 pole.  Arklow was the longshot winner who beat Good Samaritan in the G2 American Turf at Churchill Downs. Mike Smith stays aboard, and this son of Arch is 2/2 on the greensward. Smith is winning at (42%) at Belmont and the “Money Man” cometh for a very good reason. I think we’ll be hearing good things from this guy in the future. Called To The Bar ships in from France and is 4/4 ITM on the turf. He has been away from the races for 46 days and the son of Henrythenavigator. He has won at this distance for rider Maxime Guyon at Chantilly.
