Her last effort was all that and trip to the winner’s circle and Luzzi wins 13% with speed ball runners. #2 Maiden Beauty can layoff the pace and make a bid. She is on the turn back from a mile and I like the idea of mixing her surroundings up a bit. Javier Castellano in the irons and he’s been rolling at a 22% clip to the winner’s circle. I think they’re still trying to find the true meaning of this colt and makes a 2nd off the layoff move since a troubled trip in the gate as a beaten favorite. #3 Breaking Lucky has Luis Saez in the irons for George Weaver. Another runner still trying to find himself and that’s what makes spring at GP attractive. Look for a midpack break second time out this year.

She is 13 for 18 ITM going this far and has the ultra talented Flavien Prat abord winning 24% at the meet. Jerry Hollendorfer is the conditioner and she should calling at the top of the staying out of traffic on the outside. Looks like a lock in this race. #8 Elysea’s World has been off for 4 months coming in from Woodbine in the G1 EP Taylor. She tossed in a dud that day ad comes to California off the break. Bravo to Rosario is a plus on the left coast as he is winning at a 23% number. She is a deep closer and look for her to come rocking at top of the stretch. #6 Amandine is a filly with tactical speed. Drayden Van Dyke aboard and she is 2 for 3 ITM over the SA turf. Look for a close up and DVD to try his hand at wiring the field at a big price.

Look for more of the same as this talented young rider can get to the winner’s circle with a little racing luck. – #5 – It Tiz Well = Drayden Van Dyke for Jerry Hollendorfer and this daughter of Arch is a solid pace player. She should be up close and stalking looking to move just at the right time.

Race #11 – The G1 Pennsylvania Derby – 1 1/8 – 5:45 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections = #4 – West Coast / #8 – Irish War Cry / #5 – Irap

#4 – West Coast = This son of Flatter is starting to show the signs of a real monster on the track. Bob Baffert and Smith team up looking for 5-in-a-row. After his impressive win in the G1 Travers, he has the full attention of handicappers. He cuts back from 1 1/4 and the trainer wins (35%) off a last race win. His race to lose. #8 – Irish War Cry = This son of Curlin should be forwardly placed under Fergal Lynch for Graham Motion. Ever since the Derby he is starting to look his old self but may be catching a tough guy in West Coast this day. He’ll bring his “A” game and that has to be considered before hitting the windows. #5 – Irap = Ever since winning the Ohio Derby he has gained respect. They are cutting back from 1 1/4 and the lesser distance may fit him well. Mario Gutierrez for Doug O’Neill and they are winning (20%) the past few months as a team. A perfect stalker who can be a major player at the top of the lane.

BetPTC.com Selections – #2 – Songbird / #3 – Going for Broke / #4 – Forever Unbridled

#2 – Songbird = Daughter of Medaglia d’ Oro is 2/2 at the Spa and an impressive 14/14 ITM. Mike Smith aboard for Jerry Hollendorfer and she is making her 3rd start off the layoff (22%) and left California off a very sharp work going 47.1. She cuts back in distance and is 2/2 ITM going 9f. Smith travels in to ride this majestic gal and she can set the pace or lay right behind the leader. If she brings her “A” game she’ll be tough to stop. #3 – Going for Broke = This daughter of Blame is a stone cold closer with one of the strongest finishing riders with Irad Ortiz. She is 3/3 ITM at Saratoga coming from the Chad Brown barn. She’s run second to Songbird and knows how to get rolling late in the lane. The barn wins (32%) going from a sprint to a route, and last out she ran 7f closing late. #4 – Forever Unbridled = She exits a G2 win at CD and is 5/5 ITM going this distance. This is her 2nd off the layoff where Brown wins (22%) and (27%) off the last race win. She has a perfect stalking style and Jose Ortiz is having a super year (23%). She is maturing nicely and has the style that fits the race. #4 – By the Moon = She is a daughter of Indian Charlie and has the services of Rajiv Maragh. He is a very strong finishing rider and her stalking trip can be accentuated with a good late punch. She is 5/5 ITM at Saratoga and has some good works and an excellent sprint race to build upon. #6 – Distinta = John Velasquez in the irons for Todd Pletcher (33%) and she comes in from GP. Her races have been solid but she’ll be making a step up the class ladder.

BetPTC.com

Race #8 – The G1 Allen Jerkins Stakes – 7f – 3:35 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #7 – Coal Front / #9 – American Anthem / #1 – Practical Joke

#7 – Coal Front = Son of Stay Thirsty is a perfect 3/3 and looks to add another for the Todd Pletcher barn. He moved up in class off a maiden win in the G2 Amsterdam and was very game when the real running began. Lightly raced and has few things to pick apart. He’s pretty good right now, and we’ll know if he’s ready for that next level after Saturday. #9 – American Anthem = Bob Baffert trainee has been a tough customer and he is 2/2 at the distance. Ever since the SA Derby, he has matured into a very nice colt. He’s rolled off 2 straight going 7f and Mike Smith is his pilot. Baffert is 2/2 ITM at the Spa and wins (29%) off a graded win. #1 – Practical Joke = 2/2 with wins at the Spa and had a troubled trip in the Haskell. Joel Rosario for Chad Brown and they make a cut back in distance from 1 1/8 – 7f where the barn wins (35%). Ever since the Kentucky Derby, he is training well and running strong. The rail is a plus and the trainer knows how to bring them ready.

Race #9 – The G1 Forego – 7f – 4:12 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #10 – Drefong / #6 – Mind Your Biscuits / #2 – Ross

#10 – Drefong = A son of Gio Ponti comes to post for the Bob Baffert barn. Mike “Money-Man” Smith was in the saddle when he ducked into the gap and lost his rider. This is his 2nd start of the 2017 season and the plan looks to return to the left coast for the Breeders’ Cup with a win. He is a monster sprinter and won going 7 panels in the Kings Bishop at the Spa. Smith is a great judge of pace and he looks to be the one to beat as they come back to notch a trip to the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar. #6 – Mind Your Biscuits = He came back off a win in the Gr.2 Golden Shaheen at Meydan and rolled in the G2 Belmont Sprint. He is maturing into a big boy and his races are showing a new dimension every trip. He’s been off for 49 days and Chad Brown will have him cranked up as he is ITM (50%) with rested runners. #2 – Ross = A bit of a wild card who is here for a reason. Andrasch Starke aboard for trainer Peter Schiergen from Germany. He exits off a 6 1/2f win at Deauville only 19 days ago and has run in group company on synthetic and turf. I’m going to use him to complete my exotics, and a price may accompany him to the starting gate.

Race #10 – G1 Sword Dancer – 1 1/2 on the turf – 4:49 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #5 – Money Multiplier / #4 – Hunter O’Riley / #2 – Bigger Picture

#5 – Money Multiplier = Javier Castellano for Chad Brown (20%). This son of Lookin At Lucky is making his 2nd start of the year and a very nice win in the G2 Monmouth. He enjoys the Spa going 3/3 ITM and last year got caught up in traffic and was forced to take up in this race last year. He should be stalking mid-pack and moving before they hit the top of the lane. #4 – Hunter O’Riley = Won the G2 Bowling Green as our pick last out to light up the board. I think there’s more in the tank and he’ll come rolling like a down bound train in the stretch. Florent Geroux stays aboard and is a come from the clouds type who would benefit from some early pace. #2 – Bigger Picture = Jose Ortiz for Mike Maker and they are making a 3rd off the layoff move (25%). He is 2/3 ITM at the Spa and is a very strong closer. Ortiz is having a great year and he wins (21%) with turf runners. They have a solid post draw and the rider knows the greensward as well as anyone.

Race #11 – The G1 Travers – 1 1/4 – 5:44 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #2 – Tapwrit / #3 – West Coast / #9 – McCraken

#2 – Tapwrit = Earlier this year he peaked too soon and his best race was the Tampa Bay Derby. He never really got a break until he went on the shelf after the Derby and had three weeks to the Belmont where he bested the field by two lengths. Once Todd Pletcher figured out this son of Tapit, he’s had a two-month break from his victory in the Belmont. He owns some solid works and the rider/trainer are 6/7 ITM the past two weeks. He looks ready and all reports are good. #3 – West Coast = Baffert / Smith team up with a son of Flatter. He is looking for his 4th straight win and was an easy winner of the Los Al Derby. They never raced him as a two -yr-old and he is getting better by the race. You can bet dollars to donuts Smith will have him in the hunt at the top of the lane. #9 – McCraken = He looked like a winner in the G1 Haskell getting nailed on the wire. His only bad race was the Derby and he is 7/8 ITM lifetime. – B.J. Hernandez in the irons once again for Ian Wilkes and do not leave this guy off your ticket. He’ll chase the leaders and make a big move about the 5/16th’s pole hitting high gear. I like his stride, and the rider is underrated. He’ll be looking for some payback after the Haskell and this is a perfect place to show his ability.

Graded Stakes Preview – Saturday, July 15, 2017

BetPTC.com / Graded Stakes Preview / Ed Meyer

Delaware Park

Race #8 – G3 Kent Stakes – 1 1/8 on the turf – 4:55 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #5 – Master Plan (2-1) / #6 – Frostmourne (8-5) / #2 – Lunaire (9-2)

Master Plan = Son of Twirling Candy moves up a notch off his victory in the $50,000 Stanton Stakes. After coming back from Meydan in the UAE Derby he found a new home on turf. Tyler Gafflione in the irons for Todd Pletcher and they are winning (24%) as a team. Pletcher is 2/2 ITM over the course and his runner has faced some tough guys in his travels; Tapwrit, Thunder Snow and Epicharis to name a few. His breeding suggests the turf fits his liking, and the rider is a rising star. Frostmourne = Joel Rosario aboard for Christophe Clement. This is third off the layoff move exiting the G2 Penn Mile. Two races back he received Lasix and this has helped him kick off 2017 in fine fashion. Lunaire = Son of Malibu Moon has the services of Mike Smith and is 2/3 ITM on the turf. He looks to be evolving into a seasoned runner, and in time he’ll be more of a major player.

Race #9 – Delaware Handicap – 1 1/4  on the main – 5:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #5 – Songbird (1-5) / #3 – Weep No More (6-1) / #4 – Line of Best Fit (12-1)

Songbird = Mike Smith aboard for Jerry Hollendorfer and they have a monster of a filly here. She is 13/13 ITM with 12 wins. She has two races at 1 1/8th at two- and is maturing into a gal we’ll be talking about for years. Her works at Santa Anita look solid and is 2nd off the layoff winning the G1 Odgen Phipps at Belmont. Weep No More = 3rd start off the layoff for the Rusty Arnold barn. 1st-time blinkers, and she has run 4th and 5th against Songbird. Even with her “A +” game, she’ll have her hands full, but minor awards are not out of the question. Line of Best Fit = Solid gal who has been very consistent a few class levels below for trainer Kieron Magee (38%). She could easily be a part of the exotics.

Indiana Grand

Race #8 – G3 Indiana Oaks – 1 1/16 on the main track – 9:21 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #4 – Majestic Quality (3-1) / #8 – Mopotism (7-5) / #6 – Stonetacular (7-2)

Majestic Quality = Kent Desormeaux in the irons for his brother Keith. Ever since she came off the turf four races back, she has been looking better by the step. Her last effort in the G2 Summertime Oaks had her in full gear rolling late in the lane. I like her last two races and feel she is maturing into a fine young lady. They ship in from California and the “Brother’s D” come to the Hoosier state to take down the money. Mopotism = This daughter of Uncle Mo looked great last out and leaves California with a very sharp work to her credit. She was knocked around quite a bit in the Kentucky Oaks and has the look of a freshened filly. Stonetacular = She will be handled by B.J. Hernadez and shows solid speed. She was a beaten favorite last out and the Neil Howard barn comes back to win (28%) off this angle. She is 5/5 ITM moving up the ladder in good hands.

Race #9 – Indiana Derby – 1 1/16 on the main track- 9:49 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #9 – Untrapped (6-1) / #2 – Irap (8-5) / #3 – Wild Shot (8-1)

Untrapped = 2nd off the layoff for this son of Trappe Shot. The Ohio Derby run was good but not a peak effort. Ricardo Santana in the saddle for Steve Asmussen and this colt may be feeling his old self again. The last race didn’t use all of his reserves and I think he’ll come back and report home better. Santan has finished no worse than third and fits him well. This colt will come calling late in the lane. Irap = Reddam Racing Llc, Doug O’Neill, and Mario Gutierrez make a good team. He followed the same Derby trail run and it was grueling. Irap was impressive down the lane in the Ohio Derby and is coming back in less than three weeks. We’ll know about two minutes after post time if the Ohio Derby took too much away from this solid colt. Wild Shot = Rusty Arnold brings a nice colt to post. After his win in the Pat Day Mile at Churchill, I started seeing a good deal of talent. Look for an up close stalking effort making a move at the top of the lane.

6/17/17

Santa Anita

Race #6 – #2 – Pacific Wind – G-2 Honeymoon – 1 1/8 on the turf

A very nice daughter of Curlin who won at first asking over the SA turf. She has the look of a good stalker and hails from the barn of Peter Eurton (21%). This was her first start off a brief freshening and stepped up in class. She has hooked the winner the winner Sir Cat Sally twice, and was a troubled third both times. – She has a good late kick but we didn’t get a chance to see it as she was forced to steady off heels into the turn. Once she got it together she made a solid run for the show dough.

Race #9 – #3 – It Tiz Well – G-2 Summertime Oaks – 1 1/16

Mike Smith teamed up with Jerry Hollendorfer, and they know the way to the winner’s circle. She has faced some tough gals, and was (2-1) against the Kentucky Oaks winner Abel Tasman in the G-1 SA Oaks. She was forced to steady in the first turn, and again when she turned for home and tried to squeeze up the inside. – Toss this race, but you’ll have to use her in multi-race exotics to get the value you deserve.

6/17/17

Belterra Park

Race #1 – #6 – Cap’s Tale – 5f on the turf

It was his 3rd start off the layoff shipping in from Churchill Downs. This son of Tale of the Cat was stepping up in class and cutting back in distance. The turf rail was out 18 feet, and he managed a stout closing effort where speed rules the day. “Pede” Prentice split runners gaining quickly and is sure to bring the same game and more next time.

Race #4 – #9 – Sacred Promise – 1 mile on the turf

This son of Super Saver was making his first start on the turf for trainer Kellyn Gorder. He has travelled to Indiana, Turfway, Mahoning Valley and now Belterra. – He broke slowly at the break and circled six wide on a turf course that had the rail set 18 feet out. – I wouldn’t rule out another jump in class, and with a little cleaner trip he’ll give them fits.

Race #5 – #3 — Backsplash – 1 mile on the main track

Perry Ouzts aboard the Cleveland invader who left Thistledown off a win. She is a gamer who likes to run late and ready to ply her trade at Belterra. She bobbled at the start and looked awkward for most of the race. Once she got in gear, she managed a 5 wide run to be a bridesmaid this day. She is one to play right back no matter where she runs.
