Sunday’s Haskell

Race #12 – The G1 Haskell Invitational – 1 1/8  5:47 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #7 – Maximum Security / #5 – Mucho Gusto /#1  King for a Day

#7 Maximum Security hails from the Jason Servis barn who is winning at 29% at the meet. Luis Saez in the saddle and after the Derby DQ he had a nice prep in the Pegasus over the track and should be knocking heads on the lead. Look for a big effort today. #5 Mucho Gusto son of Mucho Macho Man for Bob Baffert who has won eight runnings of this race. He is 3rd off the layoff and 7 for 7 ITM lifetime. There is plenty of speed and Joe Talamo should be able to lay just off the main speed waiting to push the button. #1 King for a Day comes from the Todd Pletcher barn with John Velasquez in the irons. This son of Uncle Mo is making a 3rd off move and the barn scores at a 22% clip. The rail has been winning at a 24% clip and owns a sharp work coming into the race.

Del Mar

Race #4  – The G2 San Diego  1 1/16  6:30 pm EDT

#1 Catalina Cruiser is a son of Union Rags for John Sadler with Joel Rosario in the driver’s seat. 2nd off the layoff and the barn wins 16% on this move. He is a solid stalker with sparkling works. He’ll be closer to the pace today and give them plenty of trouble down the lane. #2 Core Beliefs hails from the Peter Eurton barn with Flavien Prat in the saddle. Blinkers on and has been off for 54 days. He’s a nice stalker who is dropping down a notch in from the G1 Gold Cup and cuts back to a kinder distance. #4 Draft Pick comes from the Peter Eurton barn with this son of Candy Ride. Martin Garcia in the irons and makes his 2nd start of the year. His work tabs look like he’s gearing up for a top effort.

#3 Mucho Unusual is a daughter of Mucho Macho Man for Tim Yakteen. Joel Rosario in the saddle making a 2nd off the layoff move where the barn wins 14%. This California bred should relish all of the speed to set up a good stalking trip. The faster they go the better she’ll like it. #5 Apache Princess comes in for Keith Desormeaux with brother Kent Desormeaux in the saddle. They’ve been off two months shipping in from Golden Gate. Kent D rolled off three straight going 6 1/2f on the weeds and they usually take to the mile distance with gusto. Look for her late in the game. #8 Stillwater Cove rolls in from the Wesley Ward barn with a daughter of Quality Road. Victor Espinoza in the irons and he wins 24% on the turf. The barn has been winning 26% for the year.

#5 Brandothebartender makes his 3rd off the layoff for trainer Craig Dollase and Joe Talamo. He is 8 for 15 ITM at Santa Anita and cuts back in distance from a mile. He’s been off for 55 days and is 13 for 16 ITM on the turf. A perfect stalker for Kent Desormeaux and he fires well off the shelf. #1 Kanthanka comes in for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. He was a beaten favorite in the G2 Kona Gold as the barn wins 23% looks for payback. Flavien Prat in the saddle is a plus as he’s winning 26% on the greensward.

Race #7 – The G2 Charles Whittingham – 1 1/4 on the turf – 7:00 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – United / #3 – Marckie’s Water / #7 – Ashleyluvssugar

#5 United is a son of Giant’s Causeway for Dick Mandella. Flavien Prat gets the call as he makes his 3rd off the layoff. They are making the move to change riders to turf master Prat. He gets added distance and should stalk from just off the pace. #3 Marckie’s Water goes to post for Richard Baltas. This son of Tribal Rule is 6 for 10 ITM at Santa Anita and has proven himself going long. I’m looking for a solid stalking trip. #7 Ashelyluvssugar is a son of Game Plan for trainer Peter Eurton. This is a 3rd off the layoff effort for a versatile runner. He can grab the lead of lay just off the pace. Brice Blanc is the pilot and should be on the front at the gate break in this field.

Race  #8 – The G2 Triple Bend – 7f – 7:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #1 – American Anthem / #3 – Law Abiding Citizen / #5 – Nero

#1 American Anthem hails from the barn of Bob Baffert. Mike Smith in the irons as they ship back from CD as a beaten favorite in Louisville on Derby weekend. This son of Bodemeister cuts back in distance where he is 5 for 5 ITM going 7f. Look for an up close effort under the guidance of Smith. #3 Law Abiding Citizen goes to post for trainer Mark Glatt. This son of Twirling Candy hasn’t run in 55 days and makes a turf to dirt switch. He won the G3 San Simeon and has some sharp morning works coming into the race. He will be forwardly placed at the gate break. #5 Nero is a son of Pioneer of the Nile for Bob Baffert. Drayden Van Dyke gets the nod and the colt has been working sharply. He’s been on the shelf for 55 days and I’m looking for an up close effort.

Belmont Race #4 – The $100,000 Awad – 1 mile on the turf – 2:22 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #9 – Law and Order / #6 – Empire of War / #4 – Absolved

#9 Law and Order is a son of Violence shipping in from Laurel Park. Fergal Lynch is the pilot and exits off a strong closing win in the Laurel Futurity going 6f on the turf. He gets added distance and Lynch wins 17% on the turf. Trainer Louis Linder wins 19% on the year and 13% with his shippers. He should be closing from off the pace but much closer than last out. #6 Empire of War is a speedy colt from the Todd Pletcher barn who just broke his maiden going this far last out. Manny Franco is the reinsman and went wire to wire from the #11 post last out. He has solid morning works and last out showed promise going long. If left alone on the front end could be very dangerous. #4 Absolved is a son of Blame who should get a perfect mid pack stalking trip. Trainer Claudio Gonzalez wins 28% on the year and brings in Kevin Gomez for the call. This is his 3rd off the layoff move and sports a bullet work over the Belmont oval in preparation. His dam Berry Blessed has 9 starters, 7 winners, and 4 turf winners to her credit.

Race #9 – The G3 Bold Ruler – 7f – 5:08 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Delta Prince / #5 – Petrov / #4 – Coal Front

#6 Delta Prince makes the turf to dirt switch for James Jerkins with Irad Ortiz in the irons. A beaten favorite in the G1 Woodbine Mile. Cutting back to 7f may be an ask for this solid closer, but Ortiz is an excellent judge of pace. His last three works are super and if they are any indication we may be seeing a big effort in here. #5 Petrov is a solid son of Flatter for trainer Ron Moquette. He ships back from Remington Park as a beaten chalk and the barn comes back to score 22% on this move. He should be a mid pack stalker and with that sparkling bullet work, he is bound to take action at the windows. #4 Coal Front has been off for a year from the races. He has shown a great deal of speed for trainer Todd Pletcher who wins 31% with long layoffs. This ridgling is 4 for 5 ITM lifetime with wins and Pletcher can come right off the bench and fire.

Keeneland

Race #9 – The G2 Fayette – 1 1/8 on the dirt – 5:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Leofric / #6 – Hofburg / #1-Prime Attraction

#5 Leofric is a son of Candy Ride who has been away from the races for 56 days for trainer Brad Cox.  Florent Geroux in the saddle and is 2 for 2 with wins. He shows a good work pattern and Cox wins 28% with layoff runners coming back to the races. He exits the G1 Woodward facing Yoshida who was ultra tough that day. He should be forwardly placed and give a great account of himself today. #6 Hofburg exits the G1 Pennsylvania Derby and has faced some of the toughest runners of the year. This son of Tapit has one bad race to his credit and that was the Kentucky Derby. He is a stone cold closer, and Jose Ortiz aboard for trainer Bill Mott do very good work together. #1 Prime Attraction has Kent Desormeaux in the irons for James Cassidy. A mid pack stalker has a dangerous look as he can jump up at any time and run a big effort. He’s always knocking on the door and drawing the rail may be a bonus for Kent D saving all the ground.

Saratoga

Race #8 – The G1 Alfred Vanderbilt – 6f – 5:02 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #4 Imperial Hint / #3 Warrior’s Club / #1 Switzerland

#4 Imperial Hint has the services of Javier Castellano in the saddle. He’s winning at 28% this meet and comes to post for trainer Luis Carvajal who is ITM 42%. He’s been off for 50 days and has been working bullets in the morning. He is 6 for 9 at the distance and cuts back from 6.5f to 6f. He’ll be right in the mix charging for the lead and should be tough the final furlong.

#3 Warrior’s Club is a son of Warrior’s Reward. He is 2 for 2 ITM at Saratoga and cuts back from 7f as a beaten favorite. If the pace is hot he’ll be motoring in high gear under Luis Saez for Coach D. Wayne Lukas.

#1 Switzerland is a son of Speightstown for trainer Steve Asmussen winning 22%. Ricardo Santanna his go to rider in the irons is a big plus. He’s been away for two months and his works have been sharp. He’ll be looking for 5 in a row today.

Race #9 – G2 Bowling Green – 1 3/8 on the turf – 5:40 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #3 Bigger Picture / #6 Sadler’s Joy / #7 Hi Happy

#3 Bigger Picture comes in for trainer Mike Maker with Jose Ortiz in the irons. He exits the G1 United Nations and is 3 for 4 ITM at the Spa. He was closing stoutly running third and now takes a drop back in class to the G2 level. This is the exact path from last year and he was beaten a neck in the shadow of the wire. He looks to seal the deal today.

#6 Sadler’s Joy is the son of Kitten’s Joy with Javier Castellano in the irons. He is 3 for 4 ITM at Saratoga and has been away from the races 49 days. The distance should fit him perfectly and look for a long range out of the clouds closing effort today.

#7 Hi Happy is a son Pure Prize for the Todd Pletcher barn winning 31%. John Velasquez in the saddle and he should be forwardly placed in the hands of an excellent reinsman. He’s 1 for 1 at the distance and will be showing the way.

Del Mar

Race #9 – The G1 Bing Crosby – 6f – 9:00 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #2 American Pastime / #4 American Anthem / #3 Roy H

#2 American Pastime is a son of Tapizar for the Bob Hess barn. He’s been off for 8 months exiting the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He has a bullet work at Del Mar and looks ready to fire off a big effort freshened up.

#4 American Anthem rolls in for trainer Bob Baffert with Mike Smith in the saddle. This son of Bodemeister is looking to make it three in a row and is making a 3rd off the layoff move. His works are sharp and he’s gonna’ be tough to handle.

#3 Roy H is a son of More Than Ready for the Peter Miller stable. Kent Desormeaux has the call and has been off since the Dubai Golden Shaheen. He’s been working a regular clip and this speedy fella is 2 for 2 ITM at Del Mar.

Graded Stakes Preview / BetPTC.com / Ed Meyer

Saratoga

Race #8 – G2 Lake Placid – 1 1/8 on the turf – 4:49 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – Uni / #3 – La Coronel / #4 – Proctor’s Ledge

#6 – Uni = Irad Ortiz aboard for Chad Brown winning (31%) the past few months. They bring a talented gal who shipped over from France in May. – Uni got Lasix for her first trip in the states, and the barn wins (18%) with medication. Her first time out had her closing stoutly against New Money Honey. She gets her 2nd trip to the races and cuts back in distance from 1 1/4 – 1 1/8. Her two morning works are sharp and signal readiness to perform. #3 – La Coronel = Florent Geroux in the irons for Mark Casse. This daughter of Colonel John ships back from Royal Ascot off a 5th place finish in the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes. She’s been on the shelf for 57 days and is 1/1 at the Spa. Her work on 8/11 shows she is ready for a prime effort. #4 – Proctor’s Ledge = Javier Castellano in the saddle exiting a G3 Lake George win. This daughter of Ghostzapper is moving up the class ladder and has plenty of solid races to build upon. This is her 2nd time with Lasix and trainer Brendan Walsh wins (23%) with this addition.

 Race #9 – G1 Alabama – 1 1/4 – 5:22 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #7 – Elate / #1 -New Money Honey / #6 – Salty

#7 – Elate = Jose Ortiz aboard for Bill Mott and was closing with a strong late kick in the G1 Coaching Club Oaks last out.She was kept in tight down the lane and denied any clear sailing to get rolling. Ortiz is winning (20%) at the meet and (21%) with the Mott barn. She’s been training well and looks to be ready for a top-notch effort. #1 – New Money Honey = Javier Castellano in the irons for Chad Brown and they get their picture taken (26%) as a team the past few months. She’s been a tuff turf runner and the barn makes the turf – dirt switch where they score (30%) on the move. You have to respect Brown’s choice, and if she takes to the main track it could be a long day for the other ladies. #6 – Salty = Tyler Gafflione for Mark Casse and they exit the G1 Coaching Club Oaks. She was heavily bet and leapt into the air prior to the start. The bullet work and a clean trip could have her right in the mix at the top of the lane.

Del Mar

Race #8 – G1 Pacific Classic – 1 1/4 – 8:30 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #8 – Arrogate / #2 – Collected / #4 – Sorry Erik

#8 – Arrogate = Mike “Money Man” Smith in the saddle for Bob Baffert winning (42%) the past 60 days. His last effort has the racing world scratching their head after the G2 San Diego Handicap. I’m tossing out the race as a clunker or a delayed Dubai World Cup victory jinx after winning the race at Meydan. His record is 8/9 ITM and even the great ones strike out. Baffert kept her close in California and he’s been training lights out. I’m looking for a big effort that will have us talking about events in the next few months.  #2 – Collected = Martin Garcia for Bob Baffert. He could be an insurance “rabbit” to keep the pace honest to set up Arrogate. This son of City Zip is a tough customer looking for his 4th victory in a row. #4 – Sorry Erik = Kent Desormeaux for his brother Keith. They enter off a win in an O.C. $75k on the turf and I’m going back two races where he faced Irap and Girvin. This has been a key move as runners who locked horns with them have come back to run very well.

Race #10 – G1 Del Mar Oaks – 1 1/8 on the turf – 9:30 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #12- Beau Recall / #10- Dream Dancing / #5 – Con Te Partino

#12 – Beau Recall = Joe Talamo in the saddle for Simon Callaghan. Ships back from Belmont in the G1 Belmont Oaks where she finished 6th. She is 5/7 ITM on the turf and has been training lights out. Cuts back from 1 1/4 – 1 1/8 and will come calling late in the lane under the strong urging of Talamo. #10 – Dream Dancing = Julien Leparoux in the driver’s seat for Mark Casse. Daughter of Tapit is 6/8 ITM on the turf and was caught wide last out in the G3 Lake George. Leparoux fits her well and he’ll be moving late in the lane off two blistering works over the Saratoga turf. #5 – Con Te Partino = Flavien Prat for trainer Wesley Ward. She ships back from Royal Ascot off a win in the Sandringham Hcp and looks to continue with her 3rd start of the 2017 season. Ward would not be sending if he didn’t feel she’s ready and I’m looking for a solid effort in hopes of a Breeders’ Cup plan in her future.

Graded Stakes Preview – Saturday, July 15, 2017

BetPTC.com / Graded Stakes Preview / Ed Meyer

Delaware Park

Race #8 – G3 Kent Stakes – 1 1/8 on the turf – 4:55 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #5 – Master Plan (2-1) / #6 – Frostmourne (8-5) / #2 – Lunaire (9-2)

Master Plan = Son of Twirling Candy moves up a notch off his victory in the $50,000 Stanton Stakes. After coming back from Meydan in the UAE Derby he found a new home on turf. Tyler Gafflione in the irons for Todd Pletcher and they are winning (24%) as a team. Pletcher is 2/2 ITM over the course and his runner has faced some tough guys in his travels; Tapwrit, Thunder Snow and Epicharis to name a few. His breeding suggests the turf fits his liking, and the rider is a rising star. Frostmourne = Joel Rosario aboard for Christophe Clement. This is third off the layoff move exiting the G2 Penn Mile. Two races back he received Lasix and this has helped him kick off 2017 in fine fashion. Lunaire = Son of Malibu Moon has the services of Mike Smith and is 2/3 ITM on the turf. He looks to be evolving into a seasoned runner, and in time he’ll be more of a major player.

Race #9 – Delaware Handicap – 1 1/4  on the main – 5:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #5 – Songbird (1-5) / #3 – Weep No More (6-1) / #4 – Line of Best Fit (12-1)

Songbird = Mike Smith aboard for Jerry Hollendorfer and they have a monster of a filly here. She is 13/13 ITM with 12 wins. She has two races at 1 1/8th at two- and is maturing into a gal we’ll be talking about for years. Her works at Santa Anita look solid and is 2nd off the layoff winning the G1 Odgen Phipps at Belmont. Weep No More = 3rd start off the layoff for the Rusty Arnold barn. 1st-time blinkers, and she has run 4th and 5th against Songbird. Even with her “A +” game, she’ll have her hands full, but minor awards are not out of the question. Line of Best Fit = Solid gal who has been very consistent a few class levels below for trainer Kieron Magee (38%). She could easily be a part of the exotics.

Indiana Grand

Race #8 – G3 Indiana Oaks – 1 1/16 on the main track – 9:21 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #4 – Majestic Quality (3-1) / #8 – Mopotism (7-5) / #6 – Stonetacular (7-2)

Majestic Quality = Kent Desormeaux in the irons for his brother Keith. Ever since she came off the turf four races back, she has been looking better by the step. Her last effort in the G2 Summertime Oaks had her in full gear rolling late in the lane. I like her last two races and feel she is maturing into a fine young lady. They ship in from California and the “Brother’s D” come to the Hoosier state to take down the money. Mopotism = This daughter of Uncle Mo looked great last out and leaves California with a very sharp work to her credit. She was knocked around quite a bit in the Kentucky Oaks and has the look of a freshened filly. Stonetacular = She will be handled by B.J. Hernadez and shows solid speed. She was a beaten favorite last out and the Neil Howard barn comes back to win (28%) off this angle. She is 5/5 ITM moving up the ladder in good hands.

Race #9 – Indiana Derby – 1 1/16 on the main track- 9:49 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #9 – Untrapped (6-1) / #2 – Irap (8-5) / #3 – Wild Shot (8-1)

Untrapped = 2nd off the layoff for this son of Trappe Shot. The Ohio Derby run was good but not a peak effort. Ricardo Santana in the saddle for Steve Asmussen and this colt may be feeling his old self again. The last race didn’t use all of his reserves and I think he’ll come back and report home better. Santan has finished no worse than third and fits him well. This colt will come calling late in the lane. Irap = Reddam Racing Llc, Doug O’Neill, and Mario Gutierrez make a good team. He followed the same Derby trail run and it was grueling. Irap was impressive down the lane in the Ohio Derby and is coming back in less than three weeks. We’ll know about two minutes after post time if the Ohio Derby took too much away from this solid colt. Wild Shot = Rusty Arnold brings a nice colt to post. After his win in the Pat Day Mile at Churchill, I started seeing a good deal of talent. Look for an up close stalking effort making a move at the top of the lane.

BetPTC spring 2016 offer

BetPTC.com – Horses to Watch – 1/11/16

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

Another week in the books and I can feel the marquee races ready to heat up. You can begin the count down when Oaklawn kicks open the doors for racing, and next weekend you’ll start seeing big time runners at Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds.  – But, I digress. There is always plenty of action to heat up during the winter months. In keeping with that thought, you’ll want to keep your antennae’s up for these runners next time they hit the track.

Aqueduct – 1/7/16 – Race #4 – #11 – One mile on the inner track

#11 – Fly Ash = Kendrick Carmouche had the assignment, and had everything going her way. She kicked out at the 1/8th pole and started to find her best stride and even had the lead for a jump or two. – She was bested by a late flying runner and wrapped up to keep gas in the tank.

Aqueduct – 1/7/16 – Race #5 – #6 – 1 1/16 on the inner track

#6 – Pushme Pullyou = Manny Franco in the irons for Joe Orseno, and was checked up into the first turn and was bothered badly. She had to wheel out into the three or four path and lost a heap of ground. Once she got herself in order, there was a solid effort shown from the 3/8th’s pole to the wire. – A clean trip may have her in the catbird seat.

Calendar16_300x250_ptc

Gulfstream Park – 1/7/16 – Race #6 – #5 – 6 1/2 on the main course

#5 – Grey Glory = Luis Saez had the call for Thom Albertrani, and they plain out hooked a monster on this day by the name of Deep Sea. Saez set the tempo and did an excellent job guiding his mount. Anyone but Deep Sea in the race, and this guy wins for fun.

Gulfstream Park – 1/8/16 – Race #8 – #3 – 6 1/2 on the main track

#3 – Enchantress = Joel Rosario had the call for Todd Pletcher, and this gal was bumped soundly at the start. Rosario did an excellent job getting this gal to settle out and was all over the track trying to pick up steam down the lane. She looked a little green, and you can bet dollars to donuts Pletcher will have her all cranked up next up.

Santa Anita – 1/9/16 – Race #6 – #3 – 6 1/2f on the dirt

#3 – Let’s Meet in Rio = Kent Desormeaux handled the mount for Bob Baffert. He was in high gear rounding the final turn, and when he angled out was bumped soundly at the 3/16th’s pole. Give him pace and a clear path and it may be lights out.

BetPTC.com – Horses to Watch – 10/5/15

BetPTC.com – Ed Meyer

Hurricane Joaquin gave most of the nation a watery smooch, as some of the best pre-Breeder’s Cup races were taking place. As the countdown begins, and the real runners start to shake out from the pretenders. One has to question whether or not we saw a solid glimpse of things to come, or just really good runners looking to score a bumper payday. Either way, as the biggest wagering weekend of the year approaches, we’re just getting started to sift through all of the information to find the paper trail to the winner’s circle. – In addition to the marquee events, there were a bevy of races that were filled with action and excuses. Here are some very nice runners who look like a good thing next time they in the paddock.

Belmont Park – 10/3/15 – Race #1 – #1 – 6 1/2f on the dirt.

#1 – Luminary Flight = John Velasquez was aboard for an eventful trip as his mount broke in the air and brushed the starting gate doors. After attempting to settle out for a shot at redemption, he entered the far turn three wide and bumped late in the lane.

Belmont Park – 10/3/15 – Race #5 – #5 – one mile on the dirt.

#5 -Red Vine = Joel Rosario teamed up with Christophe Clement. He stumbled at the start and was immediately sandwiched between runner son both sides. After being pin-balled around, he regained composure to put together a top notch run. I think a cleaner trip makes him an appointment for the winner’s circle.

Keeneland – 10/3/15 – Race #6 – #3 – 6f on the dirt.

#3 – Judy the Beauty = Mike Smith was in town to ride for Wesley Ward,  and this top shelf gal is always worth the trip. That is, until Saturday. – “Judy” was pocketed up most of the race and the patient Smith waited for the seam to open. She was begging out for room and denied down the lane. Once freed up along the rail it was a little two late as the outer two had momentum and did not allow her time to fire up her jets.  – Give her just half a bad trip and she’ll make em’ pay down the lane.

Keeneland – 10/3/15 – Race #8 – #7 – 1 1/16 on the dirt.

#7 – Exaggerator = Kent Desormeaux aboard for his brother had a eerie feel of last year’s juvenile run. He did everything right for most of the trip and spilt horses down the lane to offer up a razor sharp challenge. He did get a little lost nearing the top of the lane and Kent D. got his mind right back on business and he responded quickly. – Each passing race has him maturing, and I think next trip out will be his coming out party.

Keeneland – 10/4/15 – Race #7 – #4 – 6f on the dirt.

#4 – Conquest Tiz One = Javier Castellano aboard for Mark Casse who comes loaded for bear this meet. Jumped out to fight for the lead, settled in with solid pace and looked like a player as they turned for home. She did everything right but win. Maybe it was the fractions, the track condition, or just a bad luck turn. But she’ll get more from this race and be much the better next up.

Belterra Park – 10/4/15 – Race #5 – #9 – One mile on the dirt.

#9 – Tally Jax = John McKee in the saddle for Eduardo Caramori who has been every effective on the Ohio circuit. He stalked perfectly, and put together a solid bid. He made some late gain, but the track was a sticky goo that ranged between muddy and gummy. It just didn’t fit his liking, and with a surface with a little more grab. I think we’ll have a trip to the winner’s circle coming soon.
