Saratoga

Race #8 – The G1 Test – 7f – 5:06 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Royal Charlotte / #2 – Bellafina / #3 – Covfefe

#5 Royal Charlotte is a daughter of Cairo Prince for Chad Brown who is winning 21% with Javier Castellano in the irons. She’s a perfect 4 for 4 and gets added ground with a field loaded with speed. She is stepping up, and Castellano stalked and powered right past in the G3 Victory Ride last out. The faster they go the better she’ll like it. #2 Bellafina is a daughter of Quality Road with Flavien Prat coming in from the left coast. She’s been off 3 months and backs up to a distance where she’s a perfect 2 for 2. Her early foot should allow her to be right on the engine and Prat wins 25% with early speedrunners. #3 Covfefe comes in for trainer Brad Cox and Joel Rosario in the saddle. They ship in from CD as a beaten favorite and Cox wins 31% looking for payback. Rosario is an excellent reinsman and should send right from the gate break. She has a solid work at CD and that should have her ready to strut her stuff.

Race #9 – The G1 Whitney – 1 1/8 – 5:46 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #8 – Preservationist / #6 – McKinzie / #4 – Thunder Snow

#8 Preservationist is a son of Arch for James Jerkins and Junior Alvarado. This is his 3rd off the layoff where the barn wins 17% as they seek his 4th straight win. Cuts back in distance and his form cycle is hard to argue. Alvarado fits like a glove and should be laying just off the speed. #6 McKinzie is a son of Street Sense for Bob Baffert and Mike Smith. Been off 56 days and was blocked and forced to steady in the G1 Met. A perfect stalker with solid works coming in from Del Mar. He was a beaten favorite last out and Baffert comes back to win 24% on this move. #4 Thunder Snow hails from the barn of Saeed bin Suroor with Christophe Soumillon in the irons. He’s a hard knocker who’s been off 56 days. He always gives a strong effort but falls a bit short. He worked 7f at Belmont to prepare and will come calling late in the lane. If he wins it would not be any surprise in this solid field.

Mountaineer

Race #8 – The G3 West Virginia Derby – 1 1/8 – 5:35 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #9 – Mr. Money / #8 – Math Wizard / #1 – Chess Chief

#9 Mr. Money is a son of Goldencents and winner of the G3 Indiana Derby as he seeks his 4th straight win for Bret Calhoun. Gabriel Saez in the irons and worked a bullet off his last win. He should be a major pace player and be hard to handle for a track that plays kindly to speed. #8 Math Wizard was rolling late in the G3 Indiana Derby. Florent Geroux picks up the assignment making the 3rd off the layoff move. His bullet work coming out of the Indiana Derby is a strong sign. He will come running late and Geroux will push the button just at the right time. #1 Chess Chief comes in for trainer Dallas Stewart and Miguel Mena. 3rd off the layoff and was rolling for a minor award in the G3 Indiana Derby. Love his work over the deep CD oval and plays the role of a longe range closer. If the pace falls apart he’ll be a major player.

Del Mar

Race #8 – The G2 Yellow Ribbon – 1 1/16 on the turf – 8:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #4 – Vasilika / #1 – Beau Recall / #9 – Elysea’s World

#4 Vasilika comes from the barn of Jerry Hollendorfer with Julien Leparoux taking over for Flavien Prat who is at Saratoga. She is seeking her 5th in a row and loves Del Mar going 2 for 3 ITM. The barn wins 22% off the last race win and had two months to come in rested. #1 Beau Recall hails from the barn of Brad Cox and Drayden Van Dyke winning 30% at the meet. They ship in from Belmont and his dam Greta D’argent has 8 starters, 6 winners, and 5 turf winners to her credit. She’s a strong closer and will come rolling late for Slam Dunk Racing. #9 Elysea’s World is a daughter of Champs Elysees for Richard Baltas and Joe Talamo. Her strong late kick notched her a 4th place effort in the G1 Gamely and some sparkling works on the turf have her ready to fire.

Fair Grounds

Race #10 – The G2 New Orleans Handicap – 1 1/8 – 4:34 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #10 – Copper Bullet / #4 – Noble Indy / #2 – Lone Sailor

#10 Copper Bullet hails from the Asmussen barn with Jose Ortiz in the driver’s seat. This is his 2nd start of the year and made a red hot move in the G3 Razorback at Oaklawn last out missing by a head for the win picture. He has a solid stalking profile and good works at FG to show his readiness to fire. #4 Noble Indy has Johnny V and Pletcher teaming up and making his 2nd start of the year. He has faced some big names from last year and has some great works at Palm Beach. He is 2 for 2 ITM over the course and gets the big acid test stretching out in distance. #2 Lone Sailor is a stone cold closer with James Graham in the saddle for Thom Amoss. They are winning 26% as a team the past 60 days and he makes his 2nd start of the year and could come rolling for a minor award.

Race #11 – The G2 Muniz Memorial – 1 1/8 on the turf – 5:10 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #3 – Synchrony / #7 – Bricks and Mortar / #8 – Inspector Lynlee

#3 Synchrony has Joe Bravo in the irons for Mike Stidham and this son of Tapit is a perfect 4 for 4 in the Big Easy. This is his 2nd effort of the year and won the G3 FG Handicap impressively. Look for a stout closing move down the lane to take down the prize. #7 Bricks and Mortar is a son of Giant’s Causeway who has been off for 56 days. He is bred to love the turf and looking for his third straight victory.  His dam Beyond the Waves has 7 starters, 7 winners, 4 stakes winners, and 6 turf winners to her credit. #8 Inspector Lynlee is a son of Lemon Drop Kid for Shug McGaughey. Jose Ortiz in the irons and he was ultra impressive winning at Tampa Bay Downs. His 2nd off the layoff and coming in with fresh legs from Payson Park should have him ready to close from the back of the pack.

sunland park derby contest

Race #12 – The G2 Fair Grounds Oaks – 1 1/16 – 5:44 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #2  Serengeti Express / #7 – Slewgoodtobetrue / #8 – Liora

#2 Serengeti Express is a speedy filly from the Tham Amoss barn. James Graham is the reinsman and 2nd start of the year. She drew off impressively winning Rachel Alexandra and is 1 for 1 at FG. Toss out her BC race and she is tough as they come. Catch her if you can. #7 Slewgoodtobetrue hails from the Peter Eurton barn coming from the west coast. She has a perfect stalking style and picks up the services of Florent Geroux. Look for a ground saving trip ready to mix it up around the far turn. #8 Liora is a speedy daughter of Candy Ride and picks up the blinkers for the Wayne Catalano stable. Channing Hill in the driver’s seat and he is an excellent speed rider winning 20% on this type of runner. Look for her early and outside looking for the position.

Race #13 – The G2 Louisiana Derby – 1 1/8 – 6:13 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #10 – Spinoff / #6 – War of Will / #11 – Hog Creek Hustle

#10 Spinoff is a lightly raced son of Hard Spun for the Pletcher barn. His last win by 11 in the O.C. $75,000 arena at Tampa was more impressive than first glance. John Velasquez in the irons and his works are sparkling coming into the race. A perfect stalker who can light up the tote board as War of Will is going to take a big chunk of the money. #6 War of Will is looking for his 4th straight win. Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle for Mark Casse and they look to have a fine runner. But I’m looking down the road a bit when they hit Louisville on Derby day. This son of War Front has gotten better with every start since coming off the turf. Looking for a better price is no sin and they’ll want to keep him out of trouble as much as possible. If he has his own way he’ll be tough to handle. #11 Hog Creek Hustle comes from the Vickie Foley barn and picks up a new rider in Miguel Mena. He has a strong late kick and when he’s ready he’ll come rolling. Take a look at the 59.3 5f work which was 2 outta 53 for the distance and the day. I think he can get a big piece of the pie if he sticks to his guns and keeps his mind on business.

BetPTC.com Horses to Watch – 11/30/17

BetPTC.com – Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

The winter ovals are opening the doors and we’re ready to follow the horses as they make their next stop. But as we ready for the next oval, we need to keep our eyes open for problem runners who have an excuse. They may not have had a good break, stumbled or blocked down the lane. As handicappers, we are always looking to build our bankroll and there is no better time than now. – Just keep your eyes peeled and have these runners on your radar. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com!

Churchill Downs

11/18/17

Race #4 – #9 – Sky Promise – 1 1/16 on the turf

#9 – Sky Promise = Son of Sky Mesa for the Ken McPeek barn. He was adding first-time blinkers and had the services of Robby Albarado. The track was listed as yielding and he seems to enjoy a surface with a little “cut” to it. This day he was tracking from the back and made a strong 4 wide bid to get the show dough.

Race #7 – #2 – Like a Haint – 6f on the main

#2 – Like a Haint = Filly by Archarcharch is fresh off two straight claims and was a beaten favorite the last two. She loves CD going 5/6 ITM. She had the services of apprentice Edgar Morales and was rallying strongly on the outside. The leader and eventual winner floated out a little bit near the wire and won by a head. Some would call it race riding and others would dismiss it as a bad streak of luck. – You’ll need to follow her back as she’ll probably head to Turfway Park.

Fair Grounds

11/18/17

Race #2 – #9 – Much Trouble – 1 and 70 yards on the main

#9 -Much Trouble = Miguel Mena in the saddle for Thom Amoss. Shipping in from Indiana Grand and was a beaten favorite last out. He owned a bullet work over the course and looked to fit. He was carried out at the 3/4 and forced to check up sharply at the 1/8th pole. After all this, he still managed a strong place finish.

Del Mar

11/19/17

Race #7 – #10- Pants on Fire – 1 mile on the turf

#10 – Pants on Fire = Corey Nakatani in the irons for Richard Baltas.  3-yr-old filly by Sir Percy (GB) is regally bred for the green. She came flying and would have taken flight if she had wings. The way she maneuvered through runners and weaved in and out closing like gangbusters. – Follow her right back.

Race #8 – #2 – Solid Wager – $100k Cary Grant – 7f on the main

#2 – Solid Wager = Peter Miller is the conditioner and he has been red-hot winning 33%. He was a beaten favorite last out and was left at the post this day. – Victor Espinoza saved ground and swung out gamely making a strong 5 wide move. Everything seemed to fit and he’ll give them fits next time out.

BetPTC.com Horses to Watch – 4/11/17

This far down the road I was hoping for a little clearer picture. There are worse things I suppose, but for a horse player the muddied waters of the Derby picture can start you guessing. I was thinking why not try and use this to my advantage ? I need to dig in deeper and find a runner or two that tossed in a clunker. Or, how about a win by the unlikely runner who ran his best to date ? All good examples of finding hidden value. I’m going back over race replays and start the process of finding a fat priced runner who can light up the tote board. With 25 days and 9 hours at the time of this entry there is plenty of time to start building your blockbuster ticket. – In the meantime there is a little window to nail down some winners who may have had a compromised trip or an excuse last out. Either way, value is on the horizon and all you have to do is keep your eyes peeled. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com !

Keeneland

4/7/17

Race #4 – #1 – Roustabout – 1 1/16

Miguel Mena in the saddle for Al Stall. The Fair Grounds shipper is a son of Harlan’s Holiday and was in pretty tight at the 1/4 pole. Once Mena broke free he was beaten by a dirty nose right at the wire. If he comes back this meet go to the windows with both hands !

Aqueduct

4/8/17

Race #9 – #2 Tommy Macho – 7f – G-1 Carter Stakes

Luis Saez had the call for Todd Pletcher. Trapped on the rail down the lane making his first start in 56 days. Saez tipped off the rail for clear sailing and tried to split runners in the final 1/8th. Green Gratto and Unified slammed the door shut and he didn’t make the gap. An inquiry didn’t help his case, but we saw there was some promise. I think we’ll see big things from this son of Macho Uno this year.

Keeneland

4/9/17

Race #2 – #6 – Our Girl Abby – 4 1/2f

Jose Ortiz in the saddle for Mike Maker. Two-year-old daughter of Majestic Warrior had been training over the poly at Turfway Park. Her dam My Paige’s Jewel is 1/1 with her poly runners. She saved ground and commenced a bid earning the show spot. Look for her right back at the boutique meeting.

Race #7 – #5 – Plueven – 1 1/16 on the turf

Corey Lanerie in the driver’s seat for Phillip Sims. This son of Turtle Bowl was on the class drop and making his bid for the first time in four months. He made a strong move but came up a little leg weary down the lane. They’ll probably target Churchill Downs as he loves the Louisville sod.

Santa Anita

4/9/17

Race #2 – #3- Papaslilprincess – 1 1/16

Bryan Pena had the call and was fresh off the claim for trainer Steve Knapp. She is 6/14 ITM at SA, and was squeezed back at the break costing precious ground.

Race #4 – #5 – Tiz Jolie – 7f on the main

Tyler Baze in the irons fresh off the claim and blinkers off for this run. This son of Tiz Wonderful was making a 2nd start off a one month break and and hopped at the start costing the runner some needed ground. Better things are coming his way next time to the races.

Race #6 – #8 – Rocketann – 5 1/2f

Santiago Gonzalez in the saddle making her second start of the year. She usually dukes it out with Cal-bred stakes runners and the welcome drop to maiden special weight looked good. She was forced three wide on the final turn and may have added to the ground she covered. Maybe a better trip is just what the doctor ordered and we’ll have a runner who can make amends for her last race.

BetPTC.com – Horses to Watch – 12-14-2015

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

The “holiday hustle” is starting to take a toll on this handicapper. I’m not alone, and by no means do I have the market cornered. This time of year finds many of us running around making last minute plans, and finding that gift of perfection. In the end, I’m a bit tired but it is definitely worth the hustle. If you haven’t heard it, or a maybe a few days too early. Merry Christmas ! – Just sit back and enjoy a warm cup of tea by the fire. The glow of the fireplace crackling across the room, and you have a little gift waiting. – Here are some ponies that are sure to make your season bright !

Gulfstream Park – 12/9/15 – Race #2 – #16 – 7f on the dirt ( originally scheduled for 7 1/2 on the turf)

#16 – BB Sea = Corey Lanerie had the call for Charles Dickey. As the race came off the greensward, the outside runners started getting played at the windows. She broke alertly and was running in top form. No problems early on, and the fractions were honest. The 11 post wasn’t the worst thing to happen at the races, and she looked game. I feel the good track may have been a little tiring for the front runners early in the card. No bad moments or challenging issues. This gal has the look of a runner who will come back to set the pace and blaze away next out.

Aqueduct – 12/10/15 – Race #2 – #1 – 6f on the inner track

#1 – Alysaro = Harry Hernandez was the rider for David Jacobson, and if you don’t watch the New York races closely. Pay close attention to this 5 pound apprentice. – He was in good shape as Hernandez likes to stay close to the rail. He tipped off the fence around the 1/16th pole only to find Chelios and Forest Boy bumping like pinballs. He was in tight, and had to steady momentarily. – As they galloped out past the wire, his acceleration was impressive and warrants a trip or two to the windows next out.

Aqueduct – 12/11/15 – Race #5 – #2 – one mile on the inner track

#2 – Be a Hero = Kendrick Carmouche likely had the best runner in the race. The rider had his mount perfectly measured and worked off the rail at the 1/4 pole. He was immediately greeted by Piloting bearing out and knocking him off course. The rider stayed on task and was bumped soundly down the lane many more times. – He ran a very game third closing stoutly and was put up to 2nd place via a DQ. Not bad considering the trip, but he won’t be second best when they come storming home next out.

Gulfstream Park – 12/11/15 – Race #2 – #13 – One mile on the dirt

#13 – Poco Man = Edgard Zayas had the call, and was beginning to set sail for home when  forced five wide at the 1/8th pole slowing his late kick. Once back on target, he was forced wider and still managed to accelerate late in the lane to finish 4th. Give him clear sailing, and the next stop will be the winner’s circle.

Gulfstream Park – 12/11/15 – Race #7 – #13 – 7 1/2f on the turf

#13 – War Order = Julien Leparoux was the reinsman and had a less than a perfect trip. He was forced into tight quarters early on, and had to fight to get any position. He made a bold wide move at the head of the lane, and was forced out and denied a lane to run. He was forced to check man times and still managed to show good late kick. I would toss this race out, as this two-year-old making his second start since shipping in from Belmont will be on high alert next time to the races.

Fair Grounds – 12/11/15 – Race #6 – #9 – 1 1/16 on the turf

#9 – Hopeful Notion = Miguel Mena had the call, and his mount clipped heels with Benwill who went down through this mishap. After settling out and finding his feet again he managed  a strong effort tom finish third in the “Big Easy.” – Tough race, and a very tough break, and be on the look for a clean trip in New Orleans.
