Vargas is winning 20% on the year and wins 19% with pressing style runners. #5 Diamond King is a son of Quality Road for trainer John Servis. Jose Ortiz aboard the stalker and can be on the pace or just off. Ortiz wins 19% with close up close runners as they make a switch in riders. #3 Runnin’toluvya is a speedy gelding seeking his 11th straight victory shipping in from Charles Town where he wins flag fall to finish. Angel Suarez in the irons and he’ll be tough to catch.

BetPTC.com Selections / #1 – Bigger Picture / #4 – Focus Group / #6 – Zulu Alpha

#1 Bigger Picture is from the Mike Maker barn with Jersey Joe Bravo in the saddle. He scored in the G2 Elkhorn at Keeneland and is a stone cold closer. He’s been off two months and is 5 for 9 ITM going the distance. The rider is well acquainted with the New Jersey track. #4 Focus Group is a son of Kitten’s Joy for trainer Chad Brown. 3rd off the layoff and exits the G1 Man O’ War as a beaten favorite. He is 2 for 3 ITM at the distance and a stout closer. Jose Ortiz wins 21% with Brown and 18% on the turf. #6 Zulu Alpha is a son of Street Cry for Mike Maker. Channing Hill has the call as they make the 3rd off the layoff move. Hill fits the runner as they reunite from 2018 winning efforts.

Belmont

9/30/17

BetPTC.com Selections = #4 – Takaful / #5 – Mr. Crow / #2 – El Deal

Race #7 – G1 Vosburgh – 6f on the main- 4:04 pm ET

#4 – Takaful = Son of Bernardini exits a solid effort in the G1 H Allen Jerkins and cuts back in distance from 7f to 6f. He sports a bullet work and if you go back to last October you’ll see this guy broke his maiden over “Big Sandy” going 6 1/2f. The shorter distance, the bullet work and returning to a track he enjoys may be all good signs at the betting windows. – #5 – Mr. Crow = Son of Tapizar for the Todd Pletcher barn and he has rolled off two impressive wins. Today is a big step in class, but if the past efforts hold any good news is that he may be ready for this move. Luis Saez and Pletcher have been 4/14 the last two weeks as a team. #2 – El Deal = Speedster from the Jorge Navarro barn who has rolled off three straight wire-to-wire wins. He has plenty of speed and exits a win in the G1 Vanderbilt. He’s been off for two months and has been working a regular clip at Monmouth Park.

Race #8 – G3 Pilgrim – 1 1/16 on the turf – 4:37 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections = #6 – Maraud / #5 – Voting Control / #8 – Evaluator

#6 – Maraud = 2-yr-old son of Blame who was ultra impressive in his maiden win. His dam has 3 starters, 3 winners, and 3 turf winners. John Velasquez aboard for Todd Pletcher and they have been winning 29% the past few months as a team. He was heavily bet in debut and did not disappoint. This next step looks well within his scope if his last race was any indicator. #5 – Voting Control = Son of Kitten’s Joy is well-bred to relish the sod for the Chad Brown barn with Javier Castellano aboard. He was 6 wide and made an impressive late punch over the Belmont green getting his maiden win at first asking. #8 – Evaluator = Joel Rosario in the irons and this New York-bred won at first asking and had a troubled trip in the G3 With Anticipation for New York runners. He was a beaten chalk that day, and the public will probably be using the Mike Dilger runner to complete exotic wagers.

Race #9 – G1 Beldame – 1 1/8 on the main – 5:11 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections = #1- Elate / #7 -Eskenformoney / #5 – Money’soncharlotte

#1 – Elate =Bill Mott trainee who exits a win in the G1 Alabama. She has a couple very nice works, and two back was a bullet over the Oklahoma training course. She cuts back in distance and ran an eventful trip against Abel Tasman in the G1 CCA where she was trapped in tight along the rail this day. Ortiz is named, and he and Mott have had a good run as a team winning 27% the past 60 days. – Look for a strong late run from this little lady. #7 – Eskenformoney = Javier Castellano and Pletcher hook up and she is 2/3 ITM at Belmont. She put the finishing touches on her efforts with a solid morning work. She always brings her “A” game. #5 – Money’soncharlotte = Kelly Breen brings his daughter of Mizzen Mast for the George Hall barn. She has rolled off three straight and makes a big jump up the class ladder. She’ll be forwardly placed and may try and take over about the 5/16th’s pole. A solid stalker who is in very good form.

Race #10 – G1 Joe Hirsch – 1 1/2 on the turf – 5:45 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections = #4 – Sadler’s Joy / #5 – Beach Patrol / #1 – Money Multiplier

#4 – Sadler’s Joy = Son of Kitten’s Joy is 3/5 ITM over the course and makes his 3rd off the shelf move. He was an impressive winner in the G1 Sword Dancer and has the services of Julien Leparoux looking to make it two-in-a-row. He is 4/4 ITM going this route of ground, and this is going to be a big plus when they turn for home. #5 – Beach Patrol = Speedy son of Lemon Drop Kid for the Chad Brown barn. They exit a win in the G1 Arlington Million and if he can handle the added distance he’ll be a major player. The rider and trainer are 2/2 as a team the past few weeks and he comes in well-rested being away from the races for 49 days. #1 – Money Multiplier = Son of Lookin at Lucky is making his 3rd off the shelf 25% and was a very game in the G1 Sword Dancer and draws the red-hot rail spot. 2017 has shown us a maturing runner who can very easily take down the prize if given a clean trip. Javier Castellano in the saddle for Chad Brown this day.

BetPTC.com Horses to Watch – 8/3/17

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

The weekend had all eyes on the Spa and Monmouth Park, and this was a great weekend to watch and wager. Tracks were stocked with graded stakes and solid performers. Good Samaritan won the G1 Jim Dandy making his first trip over the dirt for Bill Mott. The trainer always wins one on his birthday, and this was quite the present as he is heading toward the G1 Travers in late August. – Monmouth did not disappoint with a super undercard, and Girvin nailing McCraken on the square in the G1 Haskell. – Here are some runners who may have had a troubled trip or a good excuse for not making it to the winner’s circle. Keep them on your radar screen before heading to the windows. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com!

Saratoga

7/29/17

Race #7 – Alw – 1 1/16 on the turf – #7 – Mom’s On Strike

#7 – Mom’s On Strike = Filly by First Dude and she came flying late last in the $200,000 Pebbles. They made a rider change from Rajiv Maragh to Luis Saez who is winning (16%) on the turf and making her first start in 9 months. She was dropping in class and saw every bit of the track this day getting caught 4 wide on the first turn and 5 wide on the final turn. She closed like a downbound train getting beat by a 1 3/4. She’ll get into gear and rebound greatly off this race.

Race #9 – G2 Bowling Green – 1 3/8 on the turf – #4 – Sadler’s Joy

#4 – Sadler’s Joy = Son of Kitten’s Joy was making his first start off the shelf in 49 days for Thom Albertrani. He was exiting the G1 Manhattan and looked to fit like a glove in this race. Javier Castellano was weaving in and out of traffic getting caught wide a few times. Once he shook free and started to roll he was inhaled by the top two down the lane. I’m tossing this one to “race-rust” and we’ll look for good things to come on the next outing.

BetPTC cash is king

Race #10 – G1 Jim Dandy – 1 1/8 – #4 – Pavel

#4 – Pavel = Trainer Doug O’Neill shipped in from California off an impressive 6 1/2f mdn win. This son of Creative Cause may be a good runner to follow as he had to show the connections he has the makings but he may need a little more time. From a maiden score to a G1 across the country may have been too much to ask. Keep your eyes peeled for him next time out as I think he’ll reward his backers coming soon.

Saratoga

7/30/17

Race #8 – A.O.C – 6f on the main – #3  Duquesne Whistle

#3  Duquesne Whistle = Son of Posse from the Linda Rice barn had the services of hot rider Ricardo Santanna. He was making his third off the shelf (25%) and had a bullet work on 6/25 before his victory on 7/1/17 at Belmont. He looked like a good play at (12-1) and he lost his footing at the start and then had to be “snatched” up by the rider to keep off of another runner. Once he got moving he made a solid effort running 4th this day.

Belterra Park

7/29/17

Race #3 – Mdn Sp Wt – 1 1/16 on the turf – #6 – Grey Queen

#6 – Grey Queen = Shipping in from Indiana Grand for the Calumet Farm connections. Edgar Paucar was the rider and trainer Jose Fernandez is winning (20%) on the year. – This daughter of More Than Ready was blocked, shuffled back and still came flying very quickly to be a bridesmaid this day. – She gets her picture taken next out with a cleaner trip.

Race #4 – Starter Alw – 1 3/16 on the main – #4 – National Defense

#4 – National Defense = Solid gelding shooting for three-in-a-row. He was 6/8 ITM over the track and made a perfect stalking move under Euclyn Prentice Jr. – He made a ground saving move against the rail and tried to tip off for clear sailing. He was impeded and blocked and was forced to settle for 3rd until a DQ placed him 2nd. I spoke with the riders after he had a meeting with the stewards over this incident and the rider felt he had the best horse by far and lost much of his momentum after being forced to check up off heels. – He’ll be a tough guy next time to the races.

Graded Stakes Preview – Saturday, July 1, 2017

BetPTC.com / Graded Stakes Preview / Ed Meyer

Monmouth Park

Race #11 – G1 United Nations – 1 mile and 3/8th’s on the turf

BetPTC.com Selections = 1. – Itsinthepost (7-2)    2. – Beach Patrol (5-2)   3. – Oscar (5-1) Nominated   4. – Lucky Lindy (15-1)

Itsinthepost ships in from California for Jeff Mullins. Tyler Baze fits this gelding taking down two straight G2 events at Keeneland and Santa Anita. The field shows plenty of early foot, and this stalker should be right off the leaders ready to pounce. Beach Patrol makes his 3rd start off a layoff and should be a major pace presence. This son of Lemon Drop Kid has a case of “seconditis” rolling off four straight place finishes. Florent Geroux aboard for Chad Brown makes him very dangerous. Oscar Nominated is a son of Kitten’s Joy and sports a very nice late turn of foot. Kendrick Carmouche gets the nod and he’ll be in the mix at the top of the lane. Lucky Lindy gets the acid test making a huge jump in class; but not to fret. He’s honest and exits off a win going 5/5 ITM on the turf.

Belmont Park

Race #9 – The G2 Mother Goose – 1 1/16 on the main track

BetPTC.com selections = 1. Unchained Melody (7-2)   2. – Lockdown (2-1)   3. – Vexatious (5-2)  4. – Moana (8-1)

Unchained Melody is a daughter of Smart Strike for the Brian Lynch barn. She is 2/3 ITM and her last trip over the Belmont surface may be a sign of things to come. She sports the best last race Beyer figure and could be maturing at the right time. Lockdown exits the Kentucky Oaks for Bill Mott and earned a 3rd place finish on a sloppy / sealed track. She loves New York and her effort in the G2 Gazelle is better than it looks. Solid works have her ready for a strong summer campaign. Vexatious is a daughter of Giant’s Causeway who exits the Kentucky Oaks. She made a solid move and hung down the lane. She always gets a piece of the pie and faced the boys earlier in the year at Fair Grounds. Moana is a daughter of Uncle Mo. She has the look of a late bloomer and may not have taken to the sloppy track in the G2 Black Eyed Susan. She should relish the fast going expected in the weather report for Belmont.

Santa Anita

Race #4 – G2 San Carlos – 7f on the main track

BetPTC.com selections = 1. – Danzing Candy (4-5)  2. – Ransom the Moon (5-2)  3. – Kobe’s Back (9-2)

Danzing Candy exits two straight wins and his latest in the G3 Lone Star Hcp going 1 1/16. Cuts back in distance where he broke his maiden for Bob Baffert at Santa Anita. – 5/6 ITM and draws the rail with the services of Mike Smith. He should be ultra tough. Ransom the Moon is a son of Malibu Moon and ships in from Woodbine. He rolled off two impressive wins at SA and attracts the services of Flavien Prat for Phil D’Amato yielding a (27%) win clip as a team. Kobe’s Back has Gary Stevens in the saddle for Peter Eurton (28%). 6/9 ITM over the course and has been facing better in the G1 ranks.

Gulfstream Park

Race #12 – G2 Princess Rooney – 7f on the main track

BetPTC.com selections = 1. – Curlin’s Approval (9-2) 2. – Lightstream (7-2)  3. – Kinsley Kisses (6-1) – 4. – Dearest (4-1)

Curlin’s Approval 2nd start off the layoff and reunites with Luis Saez. Daughter of Curlin loves GP and is 6/8 ITM over the course. She has rolled off three very nice works over the Hallandale oval. Lightstream is making a 3rd off the layoff move and retains Javier Castellano in the irons. Daughter of Harlan’s Holiday broke her maiden going 7f at GP. She’s been facing some tough fillies and will come calling late in the lane. Kinsley Kisses is a daughter of Congrats who is 2/2 at GP and exits the 100k Sugar Maple at Charlestown in the slop. She enjoys the distance and has Tyler Gafflione in the driver’s seat for Todd Pletcher winning at a (37%) clip. Dearest is a solid filly who is 6/6 ITM at GP. She is the picture of consistency and exits off three bullet works.

Woodbine (Sunday, July 2)

Race #10 – The $1 million / 158th Running of The Queen’s Plate – 1 1/4 on tapeta

BetPTC.com selections – 1. King and His Court (5-1)  2. – Holy Helena (3-1)  3. – Inflexibility (10-1)  4. – Channel Maker (4-1)

King and His Court is the son of Court Vision and is 8/9 ITM at Woodbine. He closed stoutly last out in the Plate Trial and was the Canadian two-year-old champ. Today he looks to set the record straight and take down the Queen’s Plate. Holy Helena is a daugher of Ghostzapper who loves the Tapeta surface. She sports a bullet work off that win and seeks to become the 3rd filly in seven runnings to win the race. Inflexibility makes her 3rd off the shelf effort and was a beaten favorite in the Woodbine Oaks facing Holy Helena. Castellano and Chad Brown team up as she looks to roll from off the pace. Channel Maker shipped in from Keeneland two back and put in a strong rally last out under Rafael Hernandez. This son of English Channel has been running on the turf and gets his second chance over the tapeta surface.

BetPTC.com – Horses to Watch – 8/17/15

BetPTC.com – Ed Meyer

The eyes of the racing world were focused on Arlington Park, and all went according to plan except the excessive rain that arrived late in the card. I hope you had a solid day, as there was plenty of money on the table to be swooped up for the taking. – This handicapper had the dreaded three-outta-four lament when Secret Gesture (GB) was disqualified and placed third drifting out nearing the wire. – The turf course was firm the race prior and yielding the next. It took me back in the time machine when young Jamie Spencer was taken down from a winning effort aboard Powerscourt years earlier. – But he did turn the tables rolling right back the following year and showing his heels to the field. – With the bevy of racing action going on this time of year, there are plenty of races to examine. Here are a few that ran into some trouble causing them not to give their best effort. You’ll want to follow these right back when they hit the track next out.

Saratoga – 8/10/15 – Race #9 – #11 – 5 1/2f on the turf

Sanfiera = Joel Rosario aboard for Wesley Ward and this usually produces good things. The daughter of Sunriver looked good at first asking, and she was part of a pace that turned 21.4 and 44.3 in the early fractions from the outside post. She was beaten by a fast closing Aussie Prayer, and with a better post the barn wins 20% with turf runners. Keep your eyes peeled for this gal to come right back and run big

Monmouth – 8/14/15 – Race #4 – #3 – 5f on the turf

Sterling’s Maximus = Trevor McCarthy was dead last going short and began to put together a run that made him look like he was about to overcome the poor beginning. This run was put on hold being shut down along the rail at the 1/8th pole and will fit under the “beaten favorite” angle for handicappers next out. A clean trip has her mowing them down in the stretch.

Saratoga – 8/14/15 – Race #4 – #1 – 5 1/2f on the turf

Tiz a Chance = Irad Ortiz and Graham Motion had a nice runner here, but the bumping and checking made it impossible to get into stride. Doesn’t sound like much in the big picture, but the race was decided by a head. 2nd time Lasix next out and a top notch barn gives him wings down the lane.

Gulfstream Park – 8/14/15 – Race #4 – #2 – 5f on the turf

Whisperonthestreet = Tyler Gaffalione broke through the gate before the start with this filly and that us usually a bad omen for gamblers. She was fresh off the claim from the Wesley Ward barn, and came off a beat slow to hustle up in between runners. Once she was in position, she dropped the anchor down the lane for another day. At (5-2) the public was on her like a cheap suit and she’ll reward her backers when she gets loose on the lead and shows heels and hind quarters next out.

Gulfstream – 8/16/15 – Race #11 – #3 – 1 mile on the turf

Overseer = Eddie Castro was forced to steady into the first turn and settled his mount out nicely. He made a nice run around the 3/8th’s pole and encountered traffic problems once again nearing the 1/4 pole. He still managed to work a solid effort into the race by finishing second, and with a little better trip this runner will scold the field next out for keeping him in the pocket.
