Race #4 – #4 – Tweeting – 6f on the main

Florent Geroux aboard for Thom Proctor with a good looking 1st timer. A well-bred filly by Uncle Mo was last away from the break and was carried wide into the final turn for home. This gal managed a solid bid for 3rd and should rebound nicely for a solid trainer.

Race #6 – #9 – Awesome Saturday – 6f on the main

First timer from the Bret Calhoun barn with B.J. Hernandez in the irons. This son of Any Given Saturday was forced to check sharply and still managed to hit the after-burners and close with a flourish to get the win. He has the look of a repeat player who deserves a play right back.

Race #9 – #3 – Shane’s Girlfriend – 1 1/16 on the dirt

Mario Gutierrez in the driver’s seat for Doug O’Neill. They shipped in from California and was working very well in the mornings. She was slammed on both sides leaving the gate and she still tried to rebound with her first start of 2017. Sent off the odds-on chalk, her back class gives us plenty to look forward.

Race #10 – #1 – Bullard’s Alley – 1 1/8 on the turf

Solid runner from the Tim Glyshaw barn. This was his 2nd start off the shelf and may need a little class relief dropping out of graded company. This son of Flower Alley seems to enjoy the sod and lesser foes can have a strike at a sweet price.

Gulfstream Park

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

The Sam F. Davis, San Vincente, and WEBN Stakes gave us a little glimpse of good things to come from the three-year-olds.  If you’re a horse player you have to love this time of year. The marquee events start catching your eye on Monday, and before you know you’ll be thinking of Saturday. With every passing morning the sun is coming up minutes earlier, and I can smell the roses blooming in Louisville. – But hold your horses ! – There’s a bevy of races that offer plenty of bankroll building value, and many runners who’ll get a pass this weekend as they may not have put forth their best effort due to unforeseen circumstances. Be on the lookout and give them a good look before heading to the windows. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com !

Gulfstream Park

2/11/17

Race #6 – #9 – Love Me in Malibu – 7 1/2f on the turf

Javier Castellano was the pilot, and the daughter of Malibu Moon has been off for two months shipping in from Churchill Downs. She was dropping in class and the Eddie Kenneally barn wins 37% dropping down two class levels. She was sent off the odds-on chalk and bumped at the start and forced wide throughout the race.

Race #7 – #5 – Snag – 1 1/16 on the turf

This son of Harlan’s Holiday was backing up from 2 miles on the turf and brought together the team of Florent Geroux and Todd Pletcher. He was dropping in class to the O.C. $35,000 level and looked to be a player. The colt saved ground along the rail and was forced to tap on the brakes and await room at the 1/4 pole. He still managed a solid bid but had to settle for 4th money this day.

Race #8 – #1 – Rocketry – 7 1/2f on the turf

First time starter from the James Jerkins barn and drew the rail post. he has been training a solid clip at Palm Meadows and he bred to relish the turf. – Nik Juarez found himself back in the rear and had the look of a runner who has good racing interest but will need a bit more ground. Be on the lookout for a little longer race and the barn will have all systems go !

Race #9 – #3 – Puca –  1 1/8 on the turf – G-3 Suwannee River

Five-yr-old daughter of Big Brown making her first start in two months shipping in from Aqueduct. She hails from the Bill Mott barn, and had the services of veteran turf rider Jose Lezcano. – She was a off a beat slow from the gate break and forced 7 wide into the far turn while making up ground. Maybe a small drop in class does the trick, or she’ll score at a big price at this class level. Either way, this is a follow right back to the windows runner.

Race #10 – #5 – Flatlined – 1 1/8th on the turf

Have you ever had a bad hair day for no reason ? – Well this gelding tossed in a clunker and there is no real explanation. Jersey-Joe Bravo had the call for Charles Dickey and is 9/12 ITM over the green. – He showed no real effort and was forced five wide down the backstretch. – He has the look of a turfer who will jump up and pay box cars, and you’ll want him in your exotic wagers.

Race #11 – #7 – Sharp Azteca –  1 mile GP Handicap

This son of Freud has the look of a runner who could relish the sprint or stretch out a bit and get the job done. He showed the way and drew off by a 4 1/2 length victory. 7/9 ITM for the Jorge Navarro barn and loves the GP oval. – This was his first start back off the G-1 Malibu and I think were in for a treat in the 2017 season.

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

Rain, bitter cold, and sub zero windchill’s covered many ovals this past weekend. – It never stopped the mailman, and the horsemen always try to put on the show. When the winds start making that five degree night in the minus zone and rain holds court in areas that see little to no precipitation. Thoroughbred racing is at the mercy of Mother Nature. – Rest assured, the rain and cold won’t last forever and you’ll be seeing a full compliment of red-hot racing action soon.  In the meantime, here are some runners you’ll be waiting to see hit the entry box as they’ll offer up some good value at the windows. Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com !

Race #3 – #4 – Summer Luck – 6f on the dirt

Javier Castellano in the irons for Mark Casse. A solid daughter of Lookin at Lucky had her first start in 57 days. She was bumped at the break and checked back shortly after. The good news is she managed to get it all together and turn in a very impressive 3rd place effort. She was turning back from a mile at Churchill and this race may be sign of good things to come.

Race #4 – #2 – Shiraz – 7 1/2f on the turf

Paco Lopez in the saddle for Mike Maker, and they brought a son of Tale of the Cat to post. It was his second off the layoff shipping in from New York and he checked off heels losing his action. The upside was he still managed a show placing after getting a tough trip.

Race #5 – #4 -Expedition –  1 1/16 on the main

Javier Castellano in the driver’s seat for Todd Pletcher. This son of Pioneer of the Nile bobbled at the break and got back on path down the backstretch. He was in a striking position to make a run and appeared to call it an early day. This was his 2nd lifetime effort and he should improve for the trainer next out as the barn is known for getting all the bugs out ready to roll.

Race #7 – #7 – Something Awesome – 7f on the dirt

Corey Lanerie was in the saddle and his mount was making his 1st start in 55 days. He shipped in from Woodbine and came rolling 7 wide late with very good energy.

Race #8 – #6 – Inflexibilty – 1 1/16 on the turf

Joel Rosario in the saddle for Chad Brown. They brought a daughter of Scat Daddy who was a first timer coming off a solid work tab at Palm Meadows. She was bothered at the start and this took her mind completely off business. Brown will have her more focused as he wins (25%) on the turf.

Race #9 – #7 – Bellavais – 7 1/2f on the turf

John Velasquez was aboard this filly making her first start in 59 days shipping in from Aqueduct. She was hammered in and threaded the needle at the top of the lane. At the 1/4 pole she tipped off making her run when an opponent struck her with a whip across her nose. She jumped a shadow and tried to bite the other horse. – The good news is she won by 3/4 and will only get better from here.

Tampa Bay Downs

1/7/17

Race #3 – #4 – Big Bad Kitty – 6f on the dirt

He was a first time starter with Erick Rodriguez in the irons. Sent off the odds-on favorite he hit the side of the gate upon leaving and was off very slow. – This race is one for the trash bin as he’ll come back ready to reward his backers.

The races are getting better with each passing weekend, and you can smell the aroma of roses  in the distance. – It won’t be long until we’ll be singing “My Old Kentucky Home”  with a tear in our eye. Now before you start etching in stone your Triple Crown hopeful, remember there are many races to come, and many runners will appear out of thin air. – Nothing new, it happens every year. That is one of the best surprises of Thoroughbred racing. – Before you sit back and wait for the spring to arrive, here are some runners that will have you jogging to the windows the next time they hit the track.

Gulfstream Park

Race #10 – 2/3/16 – #2 – 1 3/16 on the turf

#2 – Songoficeandfire = Jose Lezcano had the call for Bill Mott. This mare settled out nicely behind runners under the guided hand of Lezcano, and waited patiently for a seem. It just wouldn’t appear, and he finally had to “bull” his way over to get out as he had tons of runner. This move had him tap on the brakes, and when he finally saw daylight he ran out of real estate. – Lezcano and Mott are 37% ITM as team,  and I would look for some payback next up.

Dubai / Meydan

Race #2 – 2/4/16 – #3 – 5f on the turf

#3 – Naadirr = Christophe Soumillion aboard for Marco Botti, and his runner closed very fast down the lane. It had the look of a solid prep, and the commentators made note he’ll be returning later for the reminder of the Carnival. Soumillon is one of the best turf riders in the world, and he waited patiently before giving a little gas and accelerated swiftly with no real urging.

Dubai / Meydan

Race #5 – 2/4/16 – #2 – 1 3/4 mile

#2 – Famous Kid – James Doyle had the assignment for Saeed bin Suroor, and this runner was locked in against the fence by State Empire. Once Doyle was able to guide his runner off the hedge he had a very strong late kick to finish up 3rd. – Hoping to see a return later in the month for the Carnival.

Race #8 – 2/6/16 – Race #8 – #8 – 1 1/16 on the turf

#8 – Who’s Your Drama = Javier Castellano in the irons for Todd Pletcher. This was the second effort off the shelf for the son of Big Drama, and had been working well at Palm Meadows. – Confidently handled and had the misfortune of running into some slow fractions. He closed up very solid after being 14th in this field. – An effort pretty much the same has him in the winner’s circle.

Race #12 – 2/6/16 – #4 – 1 1/8 on the turf

#4 – All Included = Luis Saez aboard for Todd Pletcher.  He was holding the rail most of the trip, and when called upon for his best stride was a little erratic trying to work off the rail. – The connections team up to win 35% as team, and this son of Include looks to be on target for a great 2016.
