Belmont Race #7 – The G1 Vosburgh – 6f – 4:09 pm

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Imperial Hint / #5 – Silver Ride / #2 – Maniacal

#6 Imperial Hint has Javier Castellano in the saddle for Luis Carvajal. Tons of speed in here and this stalker may be the perfect answer. He’s been off for 2 months since Saratoga and been working bullets in the morning at Parx. He’s looking for three in a row and can lay just off the speed. This son of Imperialism is going to be tough to handle. #5 Silver Ride is a son of Candy Ride for trainer Brian Lynch. Jose Ortiz gets the call and been away for 50 days.  He is three for five ITM and has the look of a solid closer. Ortiz is a big plus and with a clean trip, he could be a major player. #2 Maniacal is a son of Kitten’s Joy making the turf to dirt switch for trainer Mike Maker where he wins 17% on this move. John Velasquez in the saddle and was a beaten favorite at Kentucky Downs. He comes back to the dirt and is one for one at Belmont.

Race #8 – The G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic – 1 1/2 on the turf – 4:42 pm

BetPTC.com Selections / #8 – Channel Maker / #1 – Robert Bruce / #3 – Sadler’s Joy

#8 Channel Maker is a son of English Channel for trainer Bill Mott. Jose Ortiz is the reinsman and is making the third start off a layoff move. He should enjoy the distance going two for three ITM and Ortiz is an excellent judge of pace. He’s a strong closing sort and will come rolling at the top of the lane. His dam In Return has 4 starters, 3 winners, 2 stakes winners, and 2 turf winners to her credit. #1 Robert Bruce comes in for Chad Brown and Irad Ortiz in the saddle. Brown is winning 26% at the meet and “Robert” exits an impressive win in the G1 Arlington Million. He’s been off for 49 days and is a stout closer. Irad Ortiz won on his birthday aboard Robert Bruce and looks to keep the party going on the stretch out in distance. #3 Sadler’s Joy is a son of Kitten’s Joy for trainer Thom Albertrani. This is his third off the layoff start and was a beaten favorite in the G1 Sword Dancer. He should come calling late in the lane and must be respected.

Race #10 – The G1 Jockey Gold Cup – 1 1/4 – 5:50 pm

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Diversify / #8 – Thunder Snow / #4 – Patch

#6 Diversify is a son of Bellamy Road for trainer Richard Violette. This New York bred is eight for eight ITM at Belmont. He’s been off for 56 days and exits an impressive win in the G1 Whitney. This son of Bellamy Road is two for two at the distance and been working bullets in the morning. Irad Ortiz will him in high cruising speed turning for home. #8 Thunder Snow comes to post for Saeed bin Suroor with Christophe Soumillion in the irons. He exits the Gr1 Juddmonte International at York and was doing very well in Dubai. He cuts back in distance and is a closer in the hands of world class rider Soumillion. #4  Patch comes into the race for the Todd Pletcher barn and Calumet Farm. Luis Saez in the irons and is 3rd off the layoff. This son of Union Rags can come running late and light up the tote board.

BetPTC.com Graded Stakes Preview – June 16, 2018

Churchill Downs

Race #6 – G2 Wise Dan Stakes – 1 1/16 turf – 8:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #4 – World Approval / #5- Mr Misunderstood / #1 – Divisidero

#4 World Approval looks to be ready to uncork a big effort. He’s been off for three months and is 2/2 ITM over the CD course. John Velasquez in the irons for Mark Casse who is winning at 20%. He was a beaten favorite last out, and the barn comes back to score 25% on this move. The distance fits going 5 out of 6 ITM and he fires fresh off the layoff. #5 Mr. Misunderstood has been off for two months and ships in from Keeneland. This son of Archarcharch loves the track winning his only two starts and makes a drop in class from the G1 Makers Mile. #1 Divisidero has the services of Jevian Toledo and this son of Kitten’s Joy is making his 2nd start of the year. He’s a stone cold closer and a perfect 3/3 at Churchill.

Race #7 – G2 Fleur de Lis – 1 1/8 – 9:05 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #2 – Mopotism / #3 -Blue Prize / #5 – Song of Spring

#2 – Mopotism is making her second off the layoff run and moves from the turf to the dirt. The Doug O’Neill barn scores at a 19% win clip with his shippers as they travel in from Santa Anita. The change in surface and drop in class may do the trick. #3  Blue Prize can show good speed when asked. Jose Ortiz is in town, and is one of the best speed riders in the country winning 19% with early runners. #5 Song of Spring comes in fresh off a win at Pimlico in the DuPont Distaff. She’s a solid closer with Ricardo Santana in the saddle. I can see her sitting off the pace and making a bid around the far turn.  If there is any rain in the area she’ll be even better.

Race #8 – The G1 Stephen Foster – 1 1/8 – 9:39 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – Backyard Haven / #2 – Patch / #1 – Honorable Duty

#6 Backyard Haven looks to be moving up the ladder in fine fashion. Lightly raced son of Tizway and the Chad Brown barn is 1/1 at Churchill. Irad Ortiz has the call and the barn wins at a 27% mark off a last race win. He has the look of a stalker but with the fast finishing Ortiz in the saddle he is excellent at getting his mounts to relax and wait. Look for an explosive effort under the Churchill lights. #2 Patch is making his 2nd start of the year. He came off a 9 month layoff and came rolling late in the lane. Luis Saez aboard for Todd Pletcher and this son of Union Rags may be maturing nicely. #1 Honorable Duty is making his 2nd effort of the year and came right back to score in an O.C. $100,000 to win easily. That was a great prep and looks to turn the table finishing 2nd in this race last year to Gun Runner. He’s not running in this field, and anything close to last year has him right there when the real running begins. Corey Lanerie has the call for Brendan Walsh.

Add in an impressive win in the G3 Victory Starlet after stumbling at the start. #8 – Faypien = Bejarano / Baffert team up (33%) the past two months and she’s been away from the races 49 days. She has plenty of workouts to prepare and cuts back from 1 1/16 – 7f where she is a perfect 2/2. #4 – Tequilita = Luis Saez for Michael Matz and this daughter of Union Rags has been off since the Kentucky Oaks. She’s been working regular and is 1/1 ITM at the Spa.

Race #9 – G1 Whitney – 1 1/8 – 5:46 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – Gun Runner / #5 – Keen Ice / #4 -Tu Brutus

#6 – Gun Runner = Impressive son of Candy Ride for the Asmussen barn. He ran a solid 2nd in the Dubai World Cup and came back 3 months later to score in the G1 Stephen Foster. He ran 3rd in the Travers last year and owns some bullet works over the Oklahoma training track. He is maturing into a machine and has some big plans for later down the road. #5 – Keen Ice = Jose Ortiz for Todd Pletcher (23%) the past 2 months. They bring a son of Curlin to post and made the same travels as Gun Runner and came back to win the G2 Suburban at Belmont. He’s 1/1 at the Spa and has the hot hand of Ortiz. #4 – Tu Brutus = Speedy son of Scat Daddy who will try to go flag to finish. He was a beaten favorite last out and this Chilean-bred can set some blistering fraction if left alone with Irad Ortiz.

Mountaineer

Race #8 – G3 West Virginia Derby – 1 1/8 – 5:21 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #3 – Patch / #5 – Impressive Edge / #7 – Colonelsdarktemper

#3 – Patch = 3-yr-old son of Union Rags exits the Belmont and been off for 56 days. Cuts back from a distance which may be more to his liking. They score (22%) off long layoffs and if you go back to Fair Grounds he was a close 2nd to Girvin who won the Haskell last weekend. Tyler Gafflione in the saddle and will have an honest pace to take a closing run. Rider and trainer have been winning (38%) the past two months and today they wear the Calumet silks. #5 – Impressive Edge = Robby Albarado for Dale Romans and they are 2nd off the layoff. They bring a son of Harlan’s Holiday to post and have faced some tough guys in his past. Albarado rides well for Romans (19%) and could be very dangerous today. #7 – Colonelsdarktemper = Son of Colonel John and has been knocking on the door. He owns some sparkling works including a bullet after the G2 Indiana Derby. Ever since the Pat Day Mile, he has looked better with every start.

Del Mar Race #6 – G2 Sorrento – 6 1/2 f – Two-yr-old fillies – 7:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – Diamondsandpearls / #1 – Surrender Now / #2 – Spectator

#6 – Diamondsandpearls = Mike Smith aboard for Bob Baffert (67%) the past 60 days and this daughter of Congrats had an impressive maiden win. Her works are hot and a stalking trip off the pace may be the order of the day. Smith comes alive for the big races and it is never too early to start finding yourself a 2-yr-old filly for down the road. #1 – Surrender Now = Flavien Pratt and Peter Miller come to post with a daughter of Morning Line. Her sire wins (19%) with her first-time starters and did not disappoint that day. #2 – Spectator = Daughter of Jimmy Creed wins (31%) with his firster’s and did not disappoint winning by 5 3/4 for the Phil D’Amato barn. Jamie Theriot aboard and has every possibility for a big move forward.

Race #8 – G2 Yellow Ribbon – 1 1/16 on the turf – 8:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – Pretty Gal / #7 – Cambodia / #4 – Juno

#6 – Pretty Gal = Mike Smith in the irons for Paulo Lobo. Smith wins (20%) with his turf runners and this daughter of Harlan’s Holiday is cutting back from 1 1/8 – 1 1/16. She drops in class from the G1 Gamely and could track from the back of the pack looking to make a sustained late rally. She is 6/10 ITM on the sod and is in the right hands today. #7 – Cambodia = Draden Van Dyke for Thom Proctor and they bring a daughter of War Front to post making her second off the layoff. She ships in from Parx and Proctor wins (21%) with a new face in the barn. She is 8/8 ITM on the green and can play the role of an up-close stalker. #4 – Juno = Gary Stevens is the pilot for Neil Drysdale and he wins (23%) on the weeds. She can dictate the pace and lose the field if left alone. She is 7/10 ITM on the greensward, and since getting Lasix three back she’s been knocking on the door.

Race #1 – Mdn Sp Wt  – #7 – Clear Convincing – 1 1/16

Irad Ortiz in the saddle for Chad Brown winning (24%). 2nd time start for the son of Giant’s Causeway, and his first race was against the one-eyed wonder Patch at Gulfstream. He was closing at the end and was bet heavy at the windows. He was rolling and hooked a “monster” in eventual winner The Big Fundemental winning by 8 1/2 lengths. This colt should get better with time.

Belmont

4/28/17

Race #4 – #6 – Wonder Meister – 1 1/16 on the turf

Irad Ortiz in the driver’s seat and this son of Bodemeister was trying the turf for the first time. His dam Wonderously has 7 starters, 6 winners, and 3 turf winners. He made a mile late kick and finishing fourth with a very strong rider change going to post.

BetPTC.com Horses to Watch – 4/4/17

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

As we close in on 33 days to the first Saturday in May, I’m really leaning toward a price. I’m not sure which one yet, but there is still plenty of time to do some value shopping. As the next couple of weekends promise to be more than super, be sure to take it all in before declaring your Derby runner. Time is on our side as we get ready to watch and wager on the (G-1) Santa Anita Derby, (G-2) Bluegrass Stakes and (G-2) Wood Memorial. There is still time to build your bankroll, and here are some runners that didn’t give a top-notch effort or had a good excuse. You’ll want to follow them right back as a big effort may be just around the corner. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com !

Gulfstream Park

4/1/17

Race #2 – #11 – Monterey Marianne – 7 1/2f on the turf

Paco Lopez had the call for Jane Cibelli. The filly was coming off a 7 month layoff from Monmouth and working a regular clip at Palm Meadows. She was a handful this day tugging at the rider begging to takeoff and had to check and be restrained. Maybe she’s feeling just fine but needed one to work out the bugs. – I’m watching for her next effort at a price.

Race #4 – #2 – Delta Prince – 1 mile on the turf

Jose Ortiz had the call for James Jerkins and this son of Street Cry was a perfect 2/2 over the sod. His 2nd effort of 2017 was exiting off a win and looked strong around the far turn as Ortiz guided him into a clear lane. He was out-kicked by eventual winner All Included who looked super as the odds-on favorite. Delta Prince may have needed a race just like this to get the competitive juices rolling, and I think we’ll see big things from this guy.

Race #8 -#9 Taperge – 1 mile on the turf

Javier Castellano in the saddle for Chad Brown always has to be respected. This daughter of Tapit flashed a good sign of things to come. Brown is winning at a white-hot (24%) and this was her third start in 2017. She got motoring and looked to have a dangerous turn of foot. This was a step up in class and I think she’ll grow into herself nicely.

Race #14 – The Florida Derby – #11 -Gunnevera – 1 1/8

Javier Castellano in the driver’s seat for Antonio Sano and they broke from the outside post. This son of Dialed In was ready to give maximum effort and had to be restrained, and then urged to move about the 3/8th’s pole. He never found that comfortable stride, and I’m not tossing out the “Gun” for one average effort. No matter where he lands he’ll be a nice runner down the road.

Fair Grounds

4/1/17

Race #9 – The Mervin Muniz -#10 -Oscar Nominated – 1 1/8 on the turf

Florent Geroux in the saddle for Mike Maker.  This son of Kitten’s Joy came in 3/3 ITM and loves the “Big Easy.” – He was a beaten chalk last time out and comes back to win (27%) next up. He was 3-4 wide on both turns and still managed a strong effort.

Race #11 – The Louisiana Derby – #1 – Patch – 1 1/8 on the main

Take nothing away from the impressive victory of Girvin. He did everything great and did not disappoint the faithful. – Patch was handled by Tyler Gafflione for Todd Pletcher and this was his third start in 2017 with no starts in his two-year-old season. – He bumped his rival and had to gather his composure quickly. After getting it all together he spun three-wide and made a game chasing effort. – Not sure where he’ll end up when the smoke clears, but he’ll get better like a fine wine.
