#4 Santa Monica is a daughter of Mastercraftsman (IRE) for trainer Chad Brown with Irad Ortiz in the saddle. This is her 2nd off the layoff where Brown wins 25% and is two for two ITM at the Spa. She is a stout closer and had to steady sharply last out. She regained her momentum and finished a game third. Look for a strong finish by Ortiz down the lane. #2 Fool’s Gold is a daughter of Medaglia d’ Oro for Chad Brown and Javier Castellano. She is 2 for 2 ITM at the  Spa and won the G3 Waya last out. Her solid late kick will fit in with well with the distance. Castellano wins 23% on the greensward. #1 Empress of the Nile is a daughter of Pioneer of the Nile for trainer Graham Motion and Irad Ortiz. Motion is 4 for 6 ITM the past couple weeks as she makes a 3rd off the layoff move capped with a 7 wide late rally win last out. She is 2 for 3 ITM at Saratoga and Ortiz in the irons is ultra attractive.

#7 Yoshida is a son of Heart’s Cry (JPN) for trainer Bill Mott and Joel Rosario in the driver’s seat. 2nd off shipping in from Churchill Downs and his last effort in the G1 Whitney was strong. He is 2 for 2 ITM at the Spa and runners coming through Kentucky have been doing well at the Spa. Rosario fits and Mott is dangerous every time he saddles. He won this race last year on his way to the Breeders’ Cup. #3 Vino Rosso is a son of Curlin for trainer Todd Pletcher and Johnny V. Blinkers off today and the barn wins 23% on this equipment move. They are coming off a short 25 day layoff and Pletcher has a maturing runner looking for a sharp effort. #9 Tom’s d’ Etat is a son of Smart Strike for trainer Al Stall and Irad Ortiz. He’s a horse for the course going a perfect three for three at the Spa. Ortiz should have him up close leading the train. Ortiz wins 24% with early runners and has a solid win in the Alydar Stakes.

#1 Vasilika is a daughter of Skipshot for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. She reunites with Flavien Prat and makes her 2nd off the layoff move. She was a beaten favorite in the G2 Yellow Ribbon and stretches out to a preferred distance where she’ll stalk mid pack and pounce. #9 Elysea’s World is a daughter of Champs Elysees (GB) making her 2nd off effort for Richard Baltas. She’s a stone cold closer and the added ground should be welcome. She’ll be in high gear turning for home. #4 Toinette is a daughter of Scat Daddy for trainer Neil Drysdale and Rafael Bejarano. She is 1 for 1 at Del Mar and gets added distance. This is her 2nd start of the year and is 5 for 6 with wins on the green. She’ll be stalking the speed and make a big run around the far turn. BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Bast / #7 – Inspiressa / #2 – Comical

#5 Bast is a two yr old daughter of Uncle Mo for trainer Bob Baffert winning 25% with Drayden Van Dyke in the driver’s seat. They add blinkers today and that yields a 35% win clip for the barn. She was off slow last out and came flying four wide in the lane closing stoutly. The blinkers should keep her focused and stretching out in distance should be a real bonus. The rider and trainer have been five for five the past two weeks and owns a sharp work to have her ready. #7 Inspiressa hails from the barn of Peter Eurton with Joe Talamo in the irons. This daughter of Commissioner wins 33% with his firsters and she did not disappoint. She was forced out in the G2 Sorrento with 1st Lasix and second time Lasix gets a 29% win clip for the barn. She takes her game to the next level and I’m looking for a big effort. #2 Comical comes from the Doug O’Neill barn with Norberto Arroyo. 3rd off the shelf and this speedy gal should be dangerous with a new rider today. She should have a garden trip just off the leader and take over the engine down the backstretch. O’Neill wins 17% with his sprinters.

The faster they go the better she’ll like it. #5 Apache Princess comes in for Keith Desormeaux with brother Kent Desormeaux in the saddle. They’ve been off two months shipping in from Golden Gate. Kent D rolled off three straight going 6 1/2f on the weeds and they usually take to the mile distance with gusto. #5 United is a son of Giant’s Causeway for Dick Mandella. Flavien Prat gets the call as he makes his 3rd off the layoff. They are making the move to change riders to turf master Prat. He gets added distance and should stalk from just off the pace. #3 Marckie’s Water goes to post for Richard Baltas. This son of Tribal Rule is 6 for 10 ITM at Santa Anita and has proven himself going long. I’m looking for a solid stalking trip. #7 Ashelyluvssugar is a son of Game Plan for trainer Peter Eurton. This is a 3rd off the layoff effort for a versatile runner. He can grab the lead of lay just off the pace. Brice Blanc is the pilot and should be on the front at the gate break in this field.

Fair Grounds

Race #10 – The G2 New Orleans Handicap – 1 1/8 – 4:34 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #10 – Copper Bullet / #4 – Noble Indy / #2 – Lone Sailor

#10 Copper Bullet hails from the Asmussen barn with Jose Ortiz in the driver’s seat. This is his 2nd start of the year and made a red hot move in the G3 Razorback at Oaklawn last out missing by a head for the win picture. He has a solid stalking profile and good works at FG to show his readiness to fire. #4 Noble Indy has Johnny V and Pletcher teaming up and making his 2nd start of the year. He has faced some big names from last year and has some great works at Palm Beach. He is 2 for 2 ITM over the course and gets the big acid test stretching out in distance. #2 Lone Sailor is a stone cold closer with James Graham in the saddle for Thom Amoss. They are winning 26% as a team the past 60 days and he makes his 2nd start of the year and could come rolling for a minor award.

Race #11 – The G2 Muniz Memorial – 1 1/8 on the turf – 5:10 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #3 – Synchrony / #7 – Bricks and Mortar / #8 – Inspector Lynlee

#3 Synchrony has Joe Bravo in the irons for Mike Stidham and this son of Tapit is a perfect 4 for 4 in the Big Easy. This is his 2nd effort of the year and won the G3 FG Handicap impressively. Look for a stout closing move down the lane to take down the prize. #7 Bricks and Mortar is a son of Giant’s Causeway who has been off for 56 days. He is bred to love the turf and looking for his third straight victory.  His dam Beyond the Waves has 7 starters, 7 winners, 4 stakes winners, and 6 turf winners to her credit. #8 Inspector Lynlee is a son of Lemon Drop Kid for Shug McGaughey. Jose Ortiz in the irons and he was ultra impressive winning at Tampa Bay Downs. His 2nd off the layoff and coming in with fresh legs from Payson Park should have him ready to close from the back of the pack.

sunland park derby contest

Race #12 – The G2 Fair Grounds Oaks – 1 1/16 – 5:44 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #2  Serengeti Express / #7 – Slewgoodtobetrue / #8 – Liora

#2 Serengeti Express is a speedy filly from the Tham Amoss barn. James Graham is the reinsman and 2nd start of the year. She drew off impressively winning Rachel Alexandra and is 1 for 1 at FG. Toss out her BC race and she is tough as they come. Catch her if you can. #7 Slewgoodtobetrue hails from the Peter Eurton barn coming from the west coast. She has a perfect stalking style and picks up the services of Florent Geroux. Look for a ground saving trip ready to mix it up around the far turn. #8 Liora is a speedy daughter of Candy Ride and picks up the blinkers for the Wayne Catalano stable. Channing Hill in the driver’s seat and he is an excellent speed rider winning 20% on this type of runner. Look for her early and outside looking for the position.

Race #13 – The G2 Louisiana Derby – 1 1/8 – 6:13 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #10 – Spinoff / #6 – War of Will / #11 – Hog Creek Hustle

#10 Spinoff is a lightly raced son of Hard Spun for the Pletcher barn. His last win by 11 in the O.C. $75,000 arena at Tampa was more impressive than first glance. John Velasquez in the irons and his works are sparkling coming into the race. A perfect stalker who can light up the tote board as War of Will is going to take a big chunk of the money. #6 War of Will is looking for his 4th straight win. Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle for Mark Casse and they look to have a fine runner. But I’m looking down the road a bit when they hit Louisville on Derby day. This son of War Front has gotten better with every start since coming off the turf. Looking for a better price is no sin and they’ll want to keep him out of trouble as much as possible. If he has his own way he’ll be tough to handle. #11 Hog Creek Hustle comes from the Vickie Foley barn and picks up a new rider in Miguel Mena. He has a strong late kick and when he’s ready he’ll come rolling. Take a look at the 59.3 5f work which was 2 outta 53 for the distance and the day. I think he can get a big piece of the pie if he sticks to his guns and keeps his mind on business.

Saratoga

Race #8 – The G1 Test Stakes – 7f – 5:10 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 Seperationofpowers / #7 Mia Mischief / #2 Spectator

#6 Seperationofpowers is a daughter of Candy Ride for the Chad Brown barn. She had an eventful trip last out stumbling and forcing to steady. She still came flying with Jose Ortiz, and he stays aboard to seal the deal. She has the look of a very solid player.

#7 Mia Mischief comes in for trainer Steve Asmussen and his go to rider Ricardo Santana. They are looking to rebound off a beaten favorite effort in the G3 Victory Ride at Belmont. She takes a step up in class and gets added ground today. She’ll be showing the way when they turn for home.

#2 Spectator rolls in for the Michelle Nevin and John Velasquez. She’s making a 2nd start off a brief layoff and should be stalking close to the leaders. The barn wins 26% with graded stakes.

Race #9 – The G1 Whitney – 1 1/8 – 5:46 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 Diversify / #2 Backyard Heaven / #4 Mind Your Biscuits

#6 Diversify is a son of Bellamy Road with Irad Ortiz as the reinsman. He is one for one at the Spa and cuts back from a mile and a quarter. He should be right there having a major say in the pace of the race. His bullet work shows all systems are go.

#2 Backyard Heaven comes in for the Chad Brown barn. He’s a beaten chalk from the G1 Stephen Foster and he’s been away for 49 days. His races are always an honest effort and I’m looking for a big move forward with a sharp and fresh runner today.

#4 Mind Your Biscuits is a talented son of Posse. He’s 3 for 5 ITM at Saratoga, and just got beat in the G1 Metropolitan last out. Joel Rosario in the saddle and he’ll have his high cruising speed in top gear as they turn for home.

Mountaineer

Race #8 – The G3 West Virginia Derby – 1 1/8 – 5:35 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 Once On Whiskey / #2 Draft Pick / #8 Mr. Freeze

#5 Once On Whiskey is a son of Bodemeister making his second off the layoff move. Trainer Bob Baffert had him cranked up in the Los Al Derby going to the winner’s circle. He has the hot reinsman Flavien Prat aboard, and his connections win 33% with shippers.

#2 Draft Pick got beat in the Los Al Derby for trainer Peter Eurton. Ever since the spring he appears to be putting it all together. Eurton wins 19% with graded stakes and has a sharp work coming into the race. He should be right at the front calling the shots under the guidance of Joe Talamo.

#8 Mr. Freeze hails from the barn of Dale Romans with Robby Albarado in the irons. He was 3 wide rolling late in the Iowa Derby and needed a little more distance. The added ground today may fit with some solid pace, and look for him to come calling in the final furlong.

Delaware Park

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Elate / #3 – Mopotism / #5 – Unbridled Mo

Race #9 – G2 Delaware Handicap – 1 1/4 – 5:35 pm EDT

#6 Elate is a daughter of Medaglia d’ Oro for the Bill Mott barn. Mott does well with layoffs as she comes in off an eight month layoff. She was a beaten favorite last out in the BC Distaff, and Mott wins 19% with fresh runners. There’s a ton of speed in here, and with Jose Ortiz in the irons. She’ll be close stalking just off the pace keeping eye on the leaders. She’s a solid gal going 8 for 10 ITM lifetime and 1 for 1 over the course.

#3 Mopotism is a daughter of Uncle Mo for Reddam Racing Llc. Doug O’Neill and Mario Gutierrez team up as she makes her third race off the shelf. Her last effort in the G2 Fleur De Lis at Churchill showed good promise as she looks to seal the deal today.

#5 Unbridled Mo is trained by Todd Pletcher and has the services of John Velasquez in the saddle. They win 39% as a team and she makes her 2nd start off a layoff dropping in class. She’ll come rolling late as Johnny V knows just when to push the button.

Indiana Grand

Race  #8 – G3 Indiana Oaks – 1 1/16 – 9:01 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Talk Veuve to Me / #7 – Skeptic / #6 – Kelly’s Humor

#5 Talk Veuve to Me comes to post for Rodolphe Brisset who was a longtime assistant to Bill Mott. She exits the G1 Acorn off a game effort against Monomoy Girl and gets added distance to dictate the pace. Julien Leparoux in the irons and she should be tough to reel in.

#7  Skeptic is the daughter of Tiznow for trainer Rusty Arnold. The barn is one for one at Indy and has the look of a midpack stalker. B.J. Hernadez Jr. in the driver’s seat and she moves up in class off two straight wins. This is the acid test she’s been wanting.

#6 Kelly’s Humor is a daughter of Midnight Lute for trainer Brad Cox. In a race filled with speed, this could set up her plans stalking just off the pace. Florent Geroux in the driver’s seat and that moves her chances up greatly.

Indiana Grand

Race #9 – G3 Indiana Derby – 1 1/16 – 9:48 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #8 King Zachary / #9 Funny Duck / #4 Dark Vader

#8 King Zachary should heavily supported at the windows from the Dale Romans barn. This son of Curlin has looked like a new runner since a dismal effort in the Wood Memorial. The way Robby Albarado guided him to victory in the G3 Matt Winn at Churchill Downs was impressive. He’s on the improve and is poised to pounce in the 24th edition of the Indiana Derby.

#9 Funny Duck comes in off a 4th place finish in the G3 Matt Winn. It was blistering hot that night and was forced to steady at the start. Let’s toss that as a bad night. Rusty Arnold is the conditioner with B.J. Hernandez Jr. in the saddle. He ran 4th last out and I’m looking for some big improvement today. His race record the last four is one good and one bad. Maybe it’s time to fire off a big effort.

#4 Dark Vader is the son of Tale of Ekati for trainer Peter Eurton. This Ohio bred ran a big race in the Easy Goer getting beat a neck after bobbling at the start. He’s a good stalker making his 3rd off the layoff. He has a sharp morning work at Santa Anita preparing for this race and seeing a huge effort would not surprise me at all.

BetPTC.com Horses to Watch – 9/2/17

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

When the Travers results hit the history books you know the summer racing season is nearing the finish. The days of sun and fun are slowly creeping toward fall racing and the Breeders’ Cup. – When handicappers see Labor Day on the calendar, it’s time to start thinking Keeneland and Fall Stars weekend. But hold your horses! – There’s plenty of summer action in the plans and wagering opportunities await. While you’re making your plans to hit the track, keep these runners in mind. They may have something more to offer and reward you the next time they hit the track. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com!

Saratoga

8/15/17

Race #6 – Mdn Claiming – 1 mile on the turf

#5 – New Canaan = Jose Ortiz in the saddle for Linda Rice (23%), and they were dropping in class and going from 5 1/2f – 1 mile. She was sent off the odds-on chalk and was forced to check up sharply at the break. Sometimes a bad start can end the race before it begins, and this race needs to be kept in mind as a very good excuse.

Race #7 – The Yaddo Stakes – 1 1/16 on the turf

#7 – Ack Nasty = Joel Rosario in the saddle for Chad Brown. This gal was making her 2nd off the layoff (21%) and 5/6 ITM at the Spa. She stalked at the rear of the field and was blocked badly down the lane this day.

Race #8 – Seek the Ante Stakes – 6 1/2f

#7 – Newport Breeze = Jose Ortiz in the irons for Peter Eurton. They were coming off a win at Del Mar moving up the class ladder. Ortiz had her moving around the far turn this day and looked to be running “green” as a youngster sometimes does. She was forced to settle for 2nd money this day and she’ll only benefit from this effort moving forward.

Saratoga

8/26/17

Race #10 – The G1 Sword Dancer – 1 1/2 on the turf

#5 – Money Multiplier = Javier Castellano aboard this son of Lookin At Lucky making his 2nd start of the season. He was 3/3 ITM at the Spa and probably on the same plan as last year heading into the Breeders’ Cup. He’ll most probably move to Belmont putting the finishing touches on his plans. This plan looks exactly like 2016 and could be a good time to be on the watch. He swung out 6 wide at the top of the lane and started to pick up ground getting bested at the finish. This race is a good sign of things to come.

Race #11 – G1 Travers – 1 1/4

#11 – Gunnevera = Edgard Zayas aboard for Antonio Sano. This son of Dialed In was making his second off a break from the Triple Crown run. He scored easily in a $100k stake at GP and owns a bullet work coming into this race. He was bumped hard at the start and rebounded nicely looking the major danger. The freshening and maturing may be coming at the right time for a fall campaign. He looked very good this day but caught a tiger named West Coast.

Race #13 – Mdn Claiming – 1 1/16 on the turf

#2 – Admirals Cove = Manny Franco in the driver’s seat for David Donk. This son of Hat Trick has been off for 3 months and dropping down in class (20%). – He stumbled badly at the start and finished with a good late kick showing promise for his next effort.

If you see anywhere near (4-5) that may be solid value. #6 – Dickinson = Paco Lopez in the saddle for Kiaran McLaughlin and she is 6/7 ITM on the turf. He’s been off for 55 days and is a deep closing type. He ran a game 3rd against “Ashley” last out and makes the same trip back to the races. #2 – Hunt = Flavien Pratt for Phil D’Amato and he was 2nd in the standings for leading rider last year. Monmouth Park

Race #11 – G1 United Nations – 1 mile and 3/8th’s on the turf

BetPTC.com Selections = 1. – Itsinthepost (7-2)    2. – Beach Patrol (5-2)   3. – Oscar (5-1) Nominated   4. – Lucky Lindy (15-1)

Itsinthepost ships in from California for Jeff Mullins. Tyler Baze fits this gelding taking down two straight G2 events at Keeneland and Santa Anita. The field shows plenty of early foot, and this stalker should be right off the leaders ready to pounce. Beach Patrol makes his 3rd start off a layoff and should be a major pace presence. This son of Lemon Drop Kid has a case of “seconditis” rolling off four straight place finishes. Florent Geroux aboard for Chad Brown makes him very dangerous. Oscar Nominated is a son of Kitten’s Joy and sports a very nice late turn of foot. Kendrick Carmouche gets the nod and he’ll be in the mix at the top of the lane. Lucky Lindy gets the acid test making a huge jump in class; but not to fret. He’s honest and exits off a win going 5/5 ITM on the turf.

She loves New York and her effort in the G2 Gazelle is better than it looks. Solid works have her ready for a strong summer campaign. She always gets a piece of the pie and faced the boys earlier in the year at Fair Grounds. Moana is a daughter of Uncle Mo. Santa Anita

Race #6 – #2 – Pacific Wind – G-2 Honeymoon – 1 1/8 on the turf

A very nice daughter of Curlin who won at first asking over the SA turf. She has the look of a good stalker and hails from the barn of Peter Eurton (21%). This was her first start off a brief freshening and stepped up in class. She has hooked the winner the winner Sir Cat Sally twice, and was a troubled third both times. – She has a good late kick but we didn’t get a chance to see it as she was forced to steady off heels into the turn. Once she got it together she made a solid run for the show dough.

Race #9 – #3 – It Tiz Well – G-2 Summertime Oaks – 1 1/16

Mike Smith teamed up with Jerry Hollendorfer, and they know the way to the winner’s circle. She has faced some tough gals, and was (2-1) against the Kentucky Oaks winner Abel Tasman in the G-1 SA Oaks. She was forced to steady in the first turn, and again when she turned for home and tried to squeeze up the inside. – Toss this race, but you’ll have to use her in multi-race exotics to get the value you deserve.

Belterra Park

Race #1 – #6 – Cap’s Tale – 5f on the turf

It was his 3rd start off the layoff shipping in from Churchill Downs. This son of Tale of the Cat was stepping up in class and cutting back in distance. The turf rail was out 18 feet, and he managed a stout closing effort where speed rules the day. “Pede” Prentice split runners gaining quickly and is sure to bring the same game and more next time.

Race #4 – #9 – Sacred Promise – 1 mile on the turf

This son of Super Saver was making his first start on the turf for trainer Kellyn Gorder. He has travelled to Indiana, Turfway, Mahoning Valley and now Belterra. – He broke slowly at the break and circled six wide on a turf course that had the rail set 18 feet out. – I wouldn’t rule out another jump in class, and with a little cleaner trip he’ll give them fits.

Race #5 – #3 — Backsplash – 1 mile on the main track

Perry Ouzts aboard the Cleveland invader who left Thistledown off a win. She is a gamer who likes to run late and ready to ply her trade at Belterra. She bobbled at the start and looked awkward for most of the race. Once she got in gear, she managed a 5 wide run to be a bridesmaid this day. She is one to play right back no matter where she runs.
