BetPTC.com Graded Stakes Preview / Ed Meyer

Woodbine

Race #9 – G1 Highlander – 6f on the turf – 4:51 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #8  Belvoir Bay / #6  Long On Value / #2 Imprimus

#8 Belvoir Bay has the services of Tyler Baze for Peter Miller. She ships in from Santa Anita where she rolled off three straight wins. This daughter of Equiano will come calling late in the lane and cuts back from 6 1/2 to 6 panels. Miller scores 18% with shippers and 24% off a last race win.

#6 Long On Value comes off a 2nd time off the layoff move for trainer Brad Cox who wins 27% with freshened runners. He closed stoutly in the Mighty Beau Stakes at Churchill and ran in the G1 Woodbine Mile last year where he had a bumpy trip. Florent Geroux in the saddle and has two solid works to signal readiness.

#2 – Imprimus ships in from Pimlico and is a perfect 4/4 with wins. He’s moving up in class and Joel Rosario is the pilot. He gets an added furlong to run and today will be the acid test to see what his future holds. His last win in the Turf Sprint at Pimlico showed signs of ready to move to the next level.

Woodbine

Race #10 – $1,000,000 Queens Plate – 1 1/4 – 5:36 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #11 Wonder Gadot / #10 Telekinesis / #7 Dixie Moon

#11 Wonder Gadot is a daughter of Medaglia d’ Oro. She gets first time blinkers for Mark Casse who wins 18% on this equipment change. John Velasquez is the reinsman and she is 2/2 ITM over the synthetic surface. Look for an up close stalking trip and was a beaten favorite last out. Casse comes back to score 26% getting some payback on this move.

#10 Telekinesis ships in from Keeneland going 2nd time off the layoff. He won the Woodbine Plate Trial under Patrick Husbands for Mark Casse. This son of Ghostzapper appeared to relish the surface and should jump right out and dictate the pace today. Catch him if you can.

#7 Dixie Moon is a daughter of Curlin who is 4/4 ITM at Woodbine. She won the Woodbine Oaks beating Wonder Gadot and returns Eurico Da Silva to the saddle. She has the look of a perfect stalker and can easily take down the prize today.

Monmouth

Race #11 – G1 United Nations – 1 3/8 on the turf – 6:01 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 Money Multiplier / #8 Bigger Picture / #1 Funtastic

#5 Money Multiplier comes in for trainer Chad Brown who sends out four runners to take down the dough. “Jersey” Joe Bravo in the irons and this son of Lookin At Lucky has a strong late punch. He is 3/3 ITM in New Jersey and exits a perfect prep win over the course. He finished 2nd in this race in 2016 and should relish the distance.

#8 Bigger Picture hails from the barn of Mike Maker. He is coming in fresh off a 49 day layoff and has the services of Kendrick Carmouche. He won last year’s edition of this race and is looking to make it two in a row. The morning works show all systems are ready coming into the race.

#1Funtastic has Antonio Gallardo in the driver’s seat for Chad Brown. This son of More than Ready ships in from Belmont and moves up in class off the last race win. Gallardo wins 23% on the sod and he’ll be a little closer to the pace today.

Older Males Line Up in the Historic Pimlico Special!

BetPTC.com selections (Friday, Race 7 Pimlico.  Post 2:39 pm Eastern)

1st – #2 Stanford (8/5)   2nd – #1 Page McKenney (5/2)   3rd – #3 Savoy Stomp (15/1)

The Pimlico Special was created to serve as a match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral.  Today’s race does not have the same grandeur but it faces some tough customers in STANFORD and PAGE McKENNEY, who meet again after running 1-2 in the $1,250,000 Charles Town Classic.  I think it is instructive that both horses, rather than take on the heavy hitters, run for Friday’s much lower purse of $300,000.  SAVOY STOMP is a somewhat reliable horse that has potential in the vertical gimmicks.

Turf Sprinters “Throw It Down” in the 5 Furlong Jim McKay

BetPTC.com selections (Friday, Race 8 Pimlico.  Post 3:13 pm Eastern)

1st – #7 Rocket Heat (5/2)   2nd – #4 Expected Ruler (20/1)   3rd – #2 Ben’s Cat (9/5)

ROCKET HEAT proved beyond a doubt in his last race that he excels in 5 furlong turf sprints.  Play with caution Friday, as he is coming off a career top and there will be only 14 days between races.  EXPECTED RULER looks slow on paper, but he is the only horse improving in this field besides the top selection and could surprise.  BEN’S CAT is Maryland’s favorite gelding and will win a few races this year but Rocket Heat may be too tough for BC to handle.

Older Mares Meet in the Allaire DuPont Distaff!

BetPTC.com Selections (Friday, Race 9 Pimlico.  Post 3:44 pm Eastern)

1st – #2 Engaginglee (6/1)              2nd – #9 Super Majesty (15/1)

3rd – #6 Savings Account (7/2)       4th – #5 Ahh Chocolate (5/1)

ENGAGINGLEE seems to be going the right way in a very wide open race.  SUPER MAJESTY has a lot of early speed and may wind up getting the right trip.  SAVINGS ACCOUNT and AHH CHOCOLATE haven’t really put it all together but I am not leaving either gal out.

Three Year Old Turf Fillies Gallop for Cash in the Hilltop Stakes

BetPTC. COM Selections (Friday, Race 10 Pimlico.  Post 4:16 pm Eastern)

1st – #4 Spinamiss (9/2)              2nd – #5 Miss Katie May (5/1)

3rd – #9 Channel Regatta (12/1)       4th – #8 Koala Queen (10/1)

SPINAMISS was a little flat last time, looking for a “bounce back” to her better GP races.  MISS KATIE MAY comes out a live Keeneland N1x allowance race that has already produced a winner and two horses that ran against Catch a Glimpse on Ky Oaks Day; she probably fits here.  CHANNEL REGATTA looks like a live local horse, and KOALA QUEEN gets first lasix after winning her first two career starts.

Three Year Old Fillies in Black Eyed Susan Stakes Tops The Friday Pimilco Card

BetPTC.com Selections (Friday, Race 11 Pimlico.  Post 4:50 pm Eastern)

1st – #5 Go Maggie Go (5/2)   2nd – #3 Land Over Sea (2/1)   3rd – #10 Kinsley Kisses (6/1)

GO MAGGIE GO offers slightly better value and in my opinion she is less likely to bounce than LAND OVER SEA.  Land Over Sea is a warrior and figures to contend for top honors.  KINSLEY KISSES has a great foundation to try a route race, although the competition is quite steep.

BetPTC.com – Horses to Watch – 5/17/16

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

As we approach the second jewel of the Triple Crown, we begin the process of reading about the horses. There is no better time to be a horse racing fan, and this time of year has me chomping at the bit. – Try not to get locked down in superstitious beliefs this week.  You know, the tight turns of Pimlico. The short stretch, and a bevy of others that cloud our vision and get in the way of our handicapping. While you’re trying to hold back your enthusiasm, here are a few runners you can keep your eyes peeled. They deserve a good look before heading to post, and that problem trip last out can be a bumper payday next trip.

Belmont

5/11/16 – Race #5 – #2 – 6f on the turf

#2 – Spearhead = Cornelio Velasquez aboard for Jeffrey Engelhardt, and they flat out ran a huge race. – 2nd time off the shelf and good works over the Finger Lakes oval prepared this runner nicely. He ran nip and tuck all the way down the stretch to get bested by a nose from the (1-2) shot from the Mike Maker barn.

Belmont

5/11/16 – Race #6 – #2 – 6f on the main track

#2 – Indulgent = Irad Ortiz in the saddle for Kiaran McLaughlin, and she was sent off the (3-5) chalk in this mdn affair. She hopped at the start erasing all chances, and once she settled in and made a big charge for minor awards she encountered a log jam of traffic. You can bet dollars to donuts the barn will correct these butterflies before the gate break, and she’ll be a handful next time to the races.

Indiana Grand

5/11/16 – Race #4 – #8 – 4 1/2f on the main track

#8 – Envoyer = Ricardo Santana for Steve Asmussen is usually money in the bank over the Indy strip, but was bested to be second this trip. He had all of the public backing at (1-5) and horses can toss in a clunker. It doesn’t take much for short mdn sprinter to get off path going 4 1/2f, and you’ll probably need to use in multi-race exotics to find your best value next out.

Belmont

5/12/16 – Race #3 – #1 – 6f

#1 – In Condition = Manny Franco in the irons for Alan Goldberg, and his runner was stuck in the starting gate and declared a non-starter in this event as he just broke his mdn at Aqueduct last out. He shows plenty of early speed in his past performances, and you can toss this one to the wind. He’ll come out guns blazing next time to the races.

Gulfstream Park

5/12/16 – Race #4 – #1 – 1 1/16 on the turf

#1 – Conquest Artura = Tyler Gafflione for Mark Casse and he was “all dressed up and no place to go” along the rail and blocked badly. Once the rider shifted out late and was forced to circle wide just to get a slice of minor awards. – A little better trip has the connections getting their picture taken in the winner’s circle next out.
