His victory in the Los Al Futurity was super impressive and Van Dyke stays in the driver’s seat for Baffert. He has a perfect stalking stride and can be dangerous anywhere on the track. #1 Extra Hope makes his 2nd start of the year and Richard Mandella gets the hot boot, Mike Smith after Prat stays on the speedy Galilean. Flavien Prat is back aboard and Hollendorfer brings another maturing runner to post. This son of Exchange Rate is a stone cold closer. He’s gonna need plenty of early pace and get the jump on Gamer Winner to be the best on this day. #7 Our Braintrust is a son of Freud for the Mark Casse barn. #4 Qurbaan is a solid son of Speightstown who is 6 for 8 ITM on the grass. Kiaran McLaughlin is the trainer and Jersey Joe Bravo in the saddle. He is cutting back from 9f to 8.5 not racing in 56 days and is a stone cold closer. He is dropping down a class level and should be a major factor in this event. #2 Inspector Lynlee has the services of Jose Ortiz in the irons for Shug McGaughey. This son of Lemon Drop kid is 13 for 21 ITM on the sod and had an eventful trip in the G2 Ft Lauderdale last out. He is 1 for 1 at TBD and cuts back in distance from 9f. He’s been on the shelf for 56 days and been working a regular clip at Payson. Ortiz will come rolling late in the lane. #3 Divisidero has the services of Jevian Toledo in the saddle and exits the G2 Ft Lauderdale. BetPTC.com Selections / #8 – So Alive / #3 – Knicks Go / #7 – Five Star General

#8 So Alive is a son of Super Saver and has the services of Javier Castellano in the irons. Ever since he caught a fast track he looked like a new runner. Two of his of three races he was forced to negotiate traffic and looked a very versatile colt. Todd Pletcher sends out another runner for the “Todd Squad” and should get a perfect stalking trip from a rider who gets his picture taken at a 20% clip. #3 Knicks Go is a pure speedster under the guided hand of Albin Jimenez. Ben Colebrook is the trainer and after a beaten favorite effort in the G2 Ky. Jockey Gold Cup at CD he has been on the shelf looking for a top effort. His works at TBD have been promising and look for a gate to wire effort. #7 Five Star General is a speedy sort under Jose Ortiz. Ever since his races have been pulled from the turf he has racked up two in a row. Ortiz wins 19% with speed runners and should give an honest account.

Santa Anita

Race #5 – The G2 Las Virgenes – 1 mile – 4:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #3 – Bellafina / #2 – Enaya Alraab / #4 – Mother Mother

#3 Bellafina is a speedy filly by Quality Road. Flavien Prat has the call for Simon Callaghan and he is winning 25% at the meet. This is her second start of the year and can grab the lead or sit just off and keep an eye on the leader. She was a beaten favorite in the BC Fillies and looks to get everything tied down for 2019 campaign.  #2 Enaya Alraab is a daughter of Uncle Mo and appears to be coming into her own. Mike Smith gets the nod for Doug O’Neill and is rolling at a 32% win clip as a jockey this meet. She has the look of a perfect stalker who will mature like a fine wine.  #4  Mother Mother has Drayden Van Dyke in the saddle and gets blinkers back on today. Trainer Bob Baffert wins 21% on this equipment change and this daughter of Pioneer of the Nile has very dangerous speed.

Race #9 – The G2 San Marcos – 1 1/4 on turf – 6:30 pm EDT

#3 Chicago Style is a son of Kitten’s Joy with Drayden Van Dyke in the irons. He is 8 for4 ITM on the grass and gets added distance. Thom Proctor brings him to post and made a very game move last out. I’m looking for that to be a good sign of things to come for this deep closer. #8 Beach View is a son of Giant’s Causeway and has Rafaelo Bejarano in the driver’s seat. He is 6 for 8 ITM on the grass and two races back made a bold move at the top pick Chicago Style only to get blocked. I’m looking for a solid rematch as they swing for home. #6 Sejo has Flavien Prat in the saddle for John Sadler. They are getting first Lasix shipping over from Longchamp in France. He is 3 for 4 ITM on the greensward. Sadler is 35% ITM with runners coming to the states first out.

Delaware Park

BetPTC.com Selections / #6 – Elate / #3 – Mopotism / #5 – Unbridled Mo

Race #9 – G2 Delaware Handicap – 1 1/4 – 5:35 pm EDT

#6 Elate is a daughter of Medaglia d’ Oro for the Bill Mott barn. Mott does well with layoffs as she comes in off an eight month layoff. She was a beaten favorite last out in the BC Distaff, and Mott wins 19% with fresh runners. There’s a ton of speed in here, and with Jose Ortiz in the irons. She’ll be close stalking just off the pace keeping eye on the leaders. She’s a solid gal going 8 for 10 ITM lifetime and 1 for 1 over the course.

#3 Mopotism is a daughter of Uncle Mo for Reddam Racing Llc. Doug O’Neill and Mario Gutierrez team up as she makes her third race off the shelf. Her last effort in the G2 Fleur De Lis at Churchill showed good promise as she looks to seal the deal today.

#5 Unbridled Mo is trained by Todd Pletcher and has the services of John Velasquez in the saddle. They win 39% as a team and she makes her 2nd start off a layoff dropping in class. She’ll come rolling late as Johnny V knows just when to push the button.

Indiana Grand

Race  #8 – G3 Indiana Oaks – 1 1/16 – 9:01 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Talk Veuve to Me / #7 – Skeptic / #6 – Kelly’s Humor

#5 Talk Veuve to Me comes to post for Rodolphe Brisset who was a longtime assistant to Bill Mott. She exits the G1 Acorn off a game effort against Monomoy Girl and gets added distance to dictate the pace. Julien Leparoux in the irons and she should be tough to reel in.

#7  Skeptic is the daughter of Tiznow for trainer Rusty Arnold. The barn is one for one at Indy and has the look of a midpack stalker. B.J. Hernadez Jr. in the driver’s seat and she moves up in class off two straight wins. This is the acid test she’s been wanting.

#6 Kelly’s Humor is a daughter of Midnight Lute for trainer Brad Cox. In a race filled with speed, this could set up her plans stalking just off the pace. Florent Geroux in the driver’s seat and that moves her chances up greatly.

Indiana Grand

Race #9 – G3 Indiana Derby – 1 1/16 – 9:48 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #8 King Zachary / #9 Funny Duck / #4 Dark Vader

#8 King Zachary should heavily supported at the windows from the Dale Romans barn. This son of Curlin has looked like a new runner since a dismal effort in the Wood Memorial. The way Robby Albarado guided him to victory in the G3 Matt Winn at Churchill Downs was impressive. He’s on the improve and is poised to pounce in the 24th edition of the Indiana Derby.

#9 Funny Duck comes in off a 4th place finish in the G3 Matt Winn. It was blistering hot that night and was forced to steady at the start. Let’s toss that as a bad night. Rusty Arnold is the conditioner with B.J. Hernandez Jr. in the saddle. He ran 4th last out and I’m looking for some big improvement today. His race record the last four is one good and one bad. Maybe it’s time to fire off a big effort.

#4 Dark Vader is the son of Tale of Ekati for trainer Peter Eurton. This Ohio bred ran a big race in the Easy Goer getting beat a neck after bobbling at the start. He’s a good stalker making his 3rd off the layoff. He has a sharp morning work at Santa Anita preparing for this race and seeing a huge effort would not surprise me at all.

Solid works and a top-notch rider make one of the top targets to chase. #7 – Beauly = Corey Lanerie for Brendan Walsh and they bring a daughter of Sea the Stars to post. She is a stone cold closer and Lanerie will have her rolling late in the lane. #4 – La Piba = Jon Court aboard for Brad Cox. Delaware Park

Race #8 – G3 Kent Stakes – 1 1/8 on the turf – 4:55 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #5 – Master Plan (2-1) / #6 – Frostmourne (8-5) / #2 – Lunaire (9-2)

Master Plan = Son of Twirling Candy moves up a notch off his victory in the $50,000 Stanton Stakes. After coming back from Meydan in the UAE Derby he found a new home on turf. Tyler Gafflione in the irons for Todd Pletcher and they are winning (24%) as a team. Pletcher is 2/2 ITM over the course and his runner has faced some tough guys in his travels; Tapwrit, Thunder Snow and Epicharis to name a few. His breeding suggests the turf fits his liking, and the rider is a rising star. Frostmourne = Joel Rosario aboard for Christophe Clement. This is third off the layoff move exiting the G2 Penn Mile. Two races back he received Lasix and this has helped him kick off 2017 in fine fashion. Lunaire = Son of Malibu Moon has the services of Mike Smith and is 2/3 ITM on the turf. He looks to be evolving into a seasoned runner, and in time he’ll be more of a major player.

Race #9 – Delaware Handicap – 1 1/4  on the main – 5:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #5 – Songbird (1-5) / #3 – Weep No More (6-1) / #4 – Line of Best Fit (12-1)

Songbird = Mike Smith aboard for Jerry Hollendorfer and they have a monster of a filly here. She is 13/13 ITM with 12 wins. She has two races at 1 1/8th at two- and is maturing into a gal we’ll be talking about for years. Her works at Santa Anita look solid and is 2nd off the layoff winning the G1 Odgen Phipps at Belmont. Weep No More = 3rd start off the layoff for the Rusty Arnold barn. 1st-time blinkers, and she has run 4th and 5th against Songbird. Even with her “A +” game, she’ll have her hands full, but minor awards are not out of the question. Line of Best Fit = Solid gal who has been very consistent a few class levels below for trainer Kieron Magee (38%). She could easily be a part of the exotics.

Indiana Grand

Race #8 – G3 Indiana Oaks – 1 1/16 on the main track – 9:21 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #4 – Majestic Quality (3-1) / #8 – Mopotism (7-5) / #6 – Stonetacular (7-2)

Majestic Quality = Kent Desormeaux in the irons for his brother Keith. Ever since she came off the turf four races back, she has been looking better by the step. Her last effort in the G2 Summertime Oaks had her in full gear rolling late in the lane. I like her last two races and feel she is maturing into a fine young lady. They ship in from California and the “Brother’s D” come to the Hoosier state to take down the money. Mopotism = This daughter of Uncle Mo looked great last out and leaves California with a very sharp work to her credit. She was knocked around quite a bit in the Kentucky Oaks and has the look of a freshened filly. Stonetacular = She will be handled by B.J. Hernadez and shows solid speed. She was a beaten favorite last out and the Neil Howard barn comes back to win (28%) off this angle. She is 5/5 ITM moving up the ladder in good hands.

Race #9 – Indiana Derby – 1 1/16 on the main track- 9:49 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections – #9 – Untrapped (6-1) / #2 – Irap (8-5) / #3 – Wild Shot (8-1)

Untrapped = 2nd off the layoff for this son of Trappe Shot. The Ohio Derby run was good but not a peak effort. Ricardo Santana in the saddle for Steve Asmussen and this colt may be feeling his old self again. The last race didn’t use all of his reserves and I think he’ll come back and report home better. Santan has finished no worse than third and fits him well. This colt will come calling late in the lane. Irap = Reddam Racing Llc, Doug O’Neill, and Mario Gutierrez make a good team. He followed the same Derby trail run and it was grueling. Irap was impressive down the lane in the Ohio Derby and is coming back in less than three weeks. We’ll know about two minutes after post time if the Ohio Derby took too much away from this solid colt. Wild Shot = Rusty Arnold brings a nice colt to post. After his win in the Pat Day Mile at Churchill, I started seeing a good deal of talent. Look for an up close stalking effort making a move at the top of the lane.

Fair Grounds

2/25/17

Race #4 – #4 – Tweeting – 6f on the main

Florent Geroux aboard for Thom Proctor with a good looking 1st timer. A well-bred filly by Uncle Mo was last away from the break and was carried wide into the final turn for home. This gal managed a solid bid for 3rd and should rebound nicely for a solid trainer.

Race #6 – #9 – Awesome Saturday – 6f on the main

First timer from the Bret Calhoun barn with B.J. Hernandez in the irons. This son of Any Given Saturday was forced to check sharply and still managed to hit the after-burners and close with a flourish to get the win. He has the look of a repeat player who deserves a play right back.

Race #9 – #3 – Shane’s Girlfriend – 1 1/16 on the dirt

Mario Gutierrez in the driver’s seat for Doug O’Neill. They shipped in from California and was working very well in the mornings. She was slammed on both sides leaving the gate and she still tried to rebound with her first start of 2017. Sent off the odds-on chalk, her back class gives us plenty to look forward.

BetPTC.com

Race #10 – #1 – Bullard’s Alley – 1 1/8 on the turf

Solid runner from the Tim Glyshaw barn. This was his 2nd start off the shelf and may need a little class relief dropping out of graded company. This son of Flower Alley seems to enjoy the sod and lesser foes can have a strike at a sweet price.

Gulfstream Park

Race #5 -#4 – Blue Buff – 5 1/f on the dirt

First timer by Unbridled’s Song with Joe Bravo in the irons. He was working lights out in the morning at Palm Meadows and his dam (Fiery Pulpit) has three wins from 4 starters. He was wide down the backstretch and won impressively. He is a strong candidate to move up the ladder with promise.

Race #8 – #2 – I’m Stepping It Up – 7f on the main

Fresh off the claim for John Servis. 9-year-old son of Congrats and was forced to tap on the brakes down the backside. Once he was in gear he out put forth an honest effort for the show dough.

BetPTC.com Horses to Watch – 9/26/16

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

The autumn racing season is next up to watch and wager, and this is what the racing world has been sweating out all summer.  This past weekend was a little reminder of what Mother Nature gave us the past three months. Her sweltering heat will be replaced by crisp autumn breezes and a foliage show that illuminates most of the country. – As you start digging out your hoodies and winter clothes, keep your eyes peeled for these runners the next time they hit the track. They have an excuse, and this could translate to a bumper payday next time to the races. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com !

Belmont

9/24/16

Race #3 – #4 – Mo Town – 1 mile on the dirt

Impressive son of Uncle Mo settled out and drew off to win by a powerful 7 lengths for the Tony Dutrow barn. – He is a playback and may offer a price moving up the ladder.

Race #6 – #7 – On Tap – 7f on the dirt

Linda Rice trainee was three-wide early and dug in gamely to present a solid challenge down the lane to get 2nd money.

Race #8 – #7 – Stormy Victoria – 1 mile on the turf

The G-3 Noble Damsel stakes was not kind as this gal never looked comfortable one step. Three wide, unsettled, and just off the bit during the race but somehow managed a solid effort in the final stages to be third.

Race #10 – #7 – Sneaky Fudge Face – 6f on the dirt

Awkward at the start as the gates opened and was forced to take up sharply. Scrap this race from your memory, and hopefully she’ll have the opportunity to come back and give a better effort.

Churchill Downs

9/24/16

Race #1 – #1 – Incensed – 5f on the turf

Bumped soundly at the break, and soldiered on as the beaten chalk to finish up a game second place finish.

Race #8 – #8 – Leofric – 1 1/16 on the dirt

He was forced into a traffic jam and had to split runners twice to get into position. Once free, he came under a strong ride to get the show money.

BetPTC.com – Horses to Watch – 2/23/2016

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

Can you feel the days getting longer by the minute and the stakes races drawing closer ? – Me too ! – This time of year has every horse player sitting on the edge of their seats waiting to see the next marquee race unveiling great things to come. At the time of this post there are only 75 days until we’ll be watching the 142nd renewal of The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports ! – But don’t jump the gun just yet, here are some runners you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled the next time they take the track. They are worth a good hard look, and a nice piece of your wagering bankroll.

Gulfstream Park

Race #3 – 2/15/16 – #2 – 7f on the dirt

#2 – Twenty in One = Closed very fast down the lane under the guidance of Rafael Hernandez in a 3/4 time of 109.2. – She caught a “speed fest” on this day, and anything that isn’t as salty should fit her like a glove for the Tomlinson barn.

Gulfstream Park

Race #7 –  2/15/16 – #11 – One mile on the turf

#11 – Purely Bay = J.J. Castellano had the call and his runner was making a “second off the layoff” run. Castellano knew he couldn’t catch the leaders as he weaved through traffic trying to save ground, but his dead last explosive run may be just what handicappers could expect next out. Looked like he had plenty in the tank wrapped up, and that may work out well for the punters.

Santa Anita

Race #1 – 2/15/16 – #4 -One mile mdn turf event

#4 – Lucy De = Santiago Gonzalez had the assignment for Mike Puype, and did absolutely nothing wrong. – This may be a case a running a “winner’s race” but not getting your picture taken. This was a very strong effort, and they were bested by the (1-2) chalk getting nailed at the wire by a head. – If Gonzalez stays aboard and Puype keeps to task, you’ll want to bet early and often when they enter.

Fair Grounds

Race #11- 2/20/16 – #2 – 1 1/16 on the main track

#2 – Mo Tom = Corey Lanerie was in the saddle for Thom Amoss, and this race was on the minds of every horse player that watched the Risen Star Stakes. – This son of Uncle Mo was far back in the field and didn’t move too early. Lanerie had two graded stakes to his credit this day, and the best was yet to come. He received a little urging and came off the rail briefly to pass tiring runners and dropped right back over to the fence. – Saving ground was a perfect move as he was starting to accelerate when Bistraya drifted over causing the colt to swerve and check sharply. Once Lanerie was in the clear they were inside the 1/8th pole when his mount picked up his action and started to close strongly. – Distance shouldn’t be a problem, and if all things come back fine. He’ll learn from this effort and only get better down the road.

Gulfstream Park

Race #5 – 2/21/16 – #8 – 1 mile on the turf

#8 – Akron Gold = Joel Rosario was named, but was on the shelf due to an injury. – J.J. Castellano picked up the mount, and this three-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’ Oro was pushed out going into the first turn. She settled nicely after the losing some ground, and spun around the field at the 5/16th’s pole three wide. She drew off and looked like a winner, but was bested in the shadow of the wire. – All said and done, losing ground on the first turn and going wide as they approached the stretch may have been just enough to get beat this day. Hard to fault the connections as they few mistakes, so I’ll file this one under bet with both hands next out.

Horse to Watch – Ed Meyer

As you watched the last of the turkey scraps turn into doggie treats, you sit back with a grateful smile on your face. Not only will this be the last you’ll see of turkey until Christmas, you had a mega-dose of watching the two-year-olds strut their stuff around the country. It was that kind of weekend where we get a small glimpse of what awaits in 2016. – It won’t be long now until you’ll start hearing the names of your favorite three-year-old stakes start going to post. Now before you start drifting off into your tryptophan-turkey coma, take a gander at the runners listed below. They had a tough day at the races, and need an extra helping of keeping your eyes peeled when they make their way to the starting gate.

Del Mar – 11/27/15 – Race #8 – #4 – 1 1/16 on the turf

#4 – Seek Again = Jose Lezcano aboard for Bill Mott, and these guys know how to get a turf runner to the winner’s circle. In this G-2 affair, Lezcano had to put on the breaks at different times during the race. He is one of the most under-appreciated turf riders in the country and deserves a big time look the next time this runner takes to the greensward.

Aqueduct – 11/28/15 – Race #6 – #1 – Mile on the turf

#1 – Island Therapy = Irad Ortiz had the call for Rudy Rodriguez, and this runner was enjoying a picture perfect ride from Ortiz until the 1/4 pole. – He had to take up and clipped heels as he swung three-wide for the stretch drive. – A little better trip has him right on target.

Churchill Downs – 11/28/15 – Race #11 – #10 – 1 1/16 on the dirt

#10 – Mo Tom = Corey Lanerie in the irons for this son of Uncle Mo. He broke from the outside post and was dead last most of the race. As the field passed the 3/8th’s, he kicked into gear over the sloppy track and was flying along the rail. As they straightened for home he looked in fine shape skimming the paint and hit the rail about the 1/16th pole. – When two-year-olds have a set back like this, you can usually call it a wrap and wait til’ next time. – I can’t wait for Thom Amoss to bring this runner back to the races.

Fair Grounds – 11/28/15 – Race #9 – #2 – One mile and 70 yards

#2 – Red Zone = Leandro Goncalves in the saddle for Jeff Thornbury. He was under a hammer-lock most of the race, and when he worked off the rail he had to take up in hand once again forcing him to slam the brakes on many times while in tight. – Give him half a path and he’ll make a direct path to the winner’s circle next time out.
