Graded Stakes Preview / BetPTC.com / Ed Meyer

Saratoga

Race #8 – G2 Lake Placid – 1 1/8 on the turf – 4:49 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – Uni / #3 – La Coronel / #4 – Proctor’s Ledge

#6 – Uni = Irad Ortiz aboard for Chad Brown winning (31%) the past few months. They bring a talented gal who shipped over from France in May. – Uni got Lasix for her first trip in the states, and the barn wins (18%) with medication. Her first time out had her closing stoutly against New Money Honey. She gets her 2nd trip to the races and cuts back in distance from 1 1/4 – 1 1/8. Her two morning works are sharp and signal readiness to perform. #3 – La Coronel = Florent Geroux in the irons for Mark Casse. This daughter of Colonel John ships back from Royal Ascot off a 5th place finish in the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes. She’s been on the shelf for 57 days and is 1/1 at the Spa. Her work on 8/11 shows she is ready for a prime effort. #4 – Proctor’s Ledge = Javier Castellano in the saddle exiting a G3 Lake George win. This daughter of Ghostzapper is moving up the class ladder and has plenty of solid races to build upon. This is her 2nd time with Lasix and trainer Brendan Walsh wins (23%) with this addition.

 Race #9 – G1 Alabama – 1 1/4 – 5:22 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #7 – Elate / #1 -New Money Honey / #6 – Salty

#7 – Elate = Jose Ortiz aboard for Bill Mott and was closing with a strong late kick in the G1 Coaching Club Oaks last out.She was kept in tight down the lane and denied any clear sailing to get rolling. Ortiz is winning (20%) at the meet and (21%) with the Mott barn. She’s been training well and looks to be ready for a top-notch effort. #1 – New Money Honey = Javier Castellano in the irons for Chad Brown and they get their picture taken (26%) as a team the past few months. She’s been a tuff turf runner and the barn makes the turf – dirt switch where they score (30%) on the move. You have to respect Brown’s choice, and if she takes to the main track it could be a long day for the other ladies. #6 – Salty = Tyler Gafflione for Mark Casse and they exit the G1 Coaching Club Oaks. She was heavily bet and leapt into the air prior to the start. The bullet work and a clean trip could have her right in the mix at the top of the lane.

Del Mar

Race #8 – G1 Pacific Classic – 1 1/4 – 8:30 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #8 – Arrogate / #2 – Collected / #4 – Sorry Erik

#8 – Arrogate = Mike “Money Man” Smith in the saddle for Bob Baffert winning (42%) the past 60 days. His last effort has the racing world scratching their head after the G2 San Diego Handicap. I’m tossing out the race as a clunker or a delayed Dubai World Cup victory jinx after winning the race at Meydan. His record is 8/9 ITM and even the great ones strike out. Baffert kept her close in California and he’s been training lights out. I’m looking for a big effort that will have us talking about events in the next few months.  #2 – Collected = Martin Garcia for Bob Baffert. He could be an insurance “rabbit” to keep the pace honest to set up Arrogate. This son of City Zip is a tough customer looking for his 4th victory in a row. #4 – Sorry Erik = Kent Desormeaux for his brother Keith. They enter off a win in an O.C. $75k on the turf and I’m going back two races where he faced Irap and Girvin. This has been a key move as runners who locked horns with them have come back to run very well.

Race #10 – G1 Del Mar Oaks – 1 1/8 on the turf – 9:30 pm ET

BetPTC.com Selections – #12- Beau Recall / #10- Dream Dancing / #5 – Con Te Partino

#12 – Beau Recall = Joe Talamo in the saddle for Simon Callaghan. Ships back from Belmont in the G1 Belmont Oaks where she finished 6th. She is 5/7 ITM on the turf and has been training lights out. Cuts back from 1 1/4 – 1 1/8 and will come calling late in the lane under the strong urging of Talamo. #10 – Dream Dancing = Julien Leparoux in the driver’s seat for Mark Casse. Daughter of Tapit is 6/8 ITM on the turf and was caught wide last out in the G3 Lake George. Leparoux fits her well and he’ll be moving late in the lane off two blistering works over the Saratoga turf. #5 – Con Te Partino = Flavien Prat for trainer Wesley Ward. She ships back from Royal Ascot off a win in the Sandringham Hcp and looks to continue with her 3rd start of the 2017 season. Ward would not be sending if he didn’t feel she’s ready and I’m looking for a solid effort in hopes of a Breeders’ Cup plan in her future.

BetPTC.com Horses to Watch – 7/11/17

Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

Most of the country had all eyes on Belmont with a spectacular day of racing on tap. They didn’t disappoint, and the track crew gets the big award having to deal with a deluge of rain the day prior.  There are plenty of runner’s we’ll be watching for months to come off this day of incredible action. – Here are some runners who may have flown under your radar, but they offer a good deal value if you follow them back to the races next out. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com !

7/8/17

Belmont

Race #3 – Maiden Sp Wt – 5 1/2f on the main track

#4 – Roaming Union = Mike Smith was aboard for Kelly Breen. He was forced to check up strongly at the break and fanned out 6 wide at the top of the lane. This race should be a great learning tool for races ahead.

Race #8 – G1 Belmont Oaks – 1 1/4 on the turf

#7 – Uni = Irad Ortiz in the saddle for Chad Brown making her first start in 58 days after shipping over from France. Brown has been winning at (27%) at the meet and she broke slow at the start and was in tight along the hedge. She was closing stoutly and will be fun to follow right back for good things to come.

Race #10 – G1 Belmont Derby – 1 1/4 on the turf

#1 – Good Samaritan = Joel Rosario for Bill Mott. 3rd off the layoff for this son of Harlan’s Holiday and hit the gate at the break. He was three-wide turning for home and dove to the rail trying to save ground. He opened at (12-1) and was bet down to ($5.60-1) as the public saw the value in this runner. He’ll bring plenty of good runs in days to come.

7/8/17

Belterra Park

Race  #5 – Claiming – 1 mile and 70 yards – (Originally scheduled for 1 mile on the turf )

#6 – Gem Digger = Odhair Mayta aboard for Stephanie Preston an (80%) winning trainer with only 5 starts this meet / 4 wins and 1 third place finish. This daughter of Tale of Ekati  was fresh off a maiden win and three off the shelf. She reared at the start and made a strong effort to get back in the game. With a little racing luck she’ll be a major player.

7/9/17

Belmont

Race #3 – Allowance – 7f on the turf

#3 – Rubilinda = Jose Ortiz in the irons for Chad Brown. This daughter of Frankel is bred to relish the turf and was taking the next step up the ladder. She broke inward at the break and steadied twice hard during the race. I would use this effort as a learning tool for the future. She’ll reward her backers next time out.

7/9/17

Belterra Park

Race #2 – Maiden Special Weight – 5f on the turf

#3 – As You Do = 1st time starter by Colonel John for the red-hot barn of Dane Kobiskie (43%) at the meet. He was working well and weaved through traffic like a professional. He’ll be effective sprinting or getting more ground adding to this win.

Graded Stakes Preview – Saturday, July 8, 2017

BetPTC.com / Graded Stakes Preview / Ed Meyer

Belmont Race #6 – G3 Dwyer – 1 mile on the main- 4:38 pm

BetPTC.com Selections – #2 – (6-5) Battalion Runner / #3 – (7-5) Practical Joke / (#5 – (5-1) Giusseppe the Great

Battalion Runner is a good looking son of Unbridled’s Song who is 4/4 ITM lifetime. He ran a game effort in the G2 Wood Memorial finishing second to Irish War Cry. Cuts back from 1 1/8 to a mile, and makes his first start off the layoff for Todd Pletcher. The barn wins (29%) with rested runners and a couple bullet works over the course has everything looking good. Practical Joke comes in for Chad Brown exiting the Kentucky Derby. He’s been on a brief vacation for 2 months and may not have taken to the track in Louisville. Solid stalker type who plans to come calling down the lane. Giusseppe the Great is a lightly raced colt from the barn of Nick Zito. He is 4/4 ITM this year and was picking up the pieces in the G2 Woody Stephens finishing 2nd.

Race #8 – G1 Belmont Oaks – 1 1/4 on the main track – 5:46 pm

BetPTC.com Selections – #8 -(7-2) New Money Honey / #2 – (15-1) Beau Recall / #7 – (6-1) Uni / #12 – (5-2) Sistercharlie

New Money Honey is making her 2nd start off a two month layoff in the hands of Javier Castellano. Her last effort in the G3 Wonder Again showed good promise coming in fresh and ready. She showed a whole new dimesion grabbing the lead going wire-to-wire. Chad Brown is the trainer and comes back to score (27%) off a stakes win. She is 2/2 at Belmont, and you have to respect the barn on big race days. Beau Recall ships in from Santa Anita, and has the services of Flavien Prat who wins (21%) on the turf. She is conditoned by Simon Callaghan and looks to put away the bridesmaid dress and walk into the winner’s circle. By all accounts she looks to be sitting on a big effort. Uni is a daughter of More than Ready for Chad Brown / Irad Ortiz. She is coming over from France, and Brown wins (29%) with new runners in his barn. Sistercharlie has been a monster and her last race at Chantilly was a big effort in the Group 1 Prix de Diane.  I love the move to Chad Brown / John Velasquez , and there is not much you couldn’t like. Opening up at (5-2) and breaking from the #12 post is enough to send me looking for a better price. If she runs half of her last race she’ll be tough, but you’re not going to get the price you deserve. I’m leaning to the other Chad Brown runners who offer a better price.

Race #9 – G2 Suburban Handicap – 1 1/4 – 6:18 pm

BetPTC.com Selections – #6 – (4-5) Shaman Ghost / #5 – (8-1) Follow Me Crev / #3 – (15-1) Sunny Ridge

Shaman Ghost is shooting for three straight wins. This son of Ghostzapper was closing stoutly in the G3 Pimlico Special. 2/3 ITM at Belmont and gets an added 1/16th of a mile to target. He appears to be hitting his gear at the right time and is 4/5 at the distance. Follow Me Crev exits the G1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita and has faced some real tough guys along his journey. He sports a bullet work going 1:13 flat at Santa Anita and ships to New York for trainer Vladimir Cerin. Sunny Ridge is a son of Holy Bull and 2/2 ITM over the Belmont surface. Manny Franco in the irons for Jason Servis (33%) and they could get a piece of the pie stalking just off the speed.

Race #10 – G1 Belmont Derby – 1 1/4 on the turf – 6:50 pm

BetPTC.com Selections – #1 – (12-1) Good Samaritan / #6 – (8-1) Arlow / #5 – (5-1) Called To The Bar

Good Samaritan exits the G3 Pennine Ridge at Belmont. This son of Harlan’s Holiday has returned to the races stronger than ever in 2017. The distance should not be a problem and draws the golden rail winning at a rate of (29%). Bill Mott  is the trainer and Joel Rosario has been the only rider aboard. You’ll  see him working up the rail looking for his path at the 1/4 pole.  Arklow was the longshot winner who beat Good Samaritan in the G2 American Turf at Churchill Downs. Mike Smith stays aboard, and this son of Arch is 2/2 on the greensward. Smith is winning at (42%) at Belmont and the “Money Man” cometh for a very good reason. I think we’ll be hearing good things from this guy in the future. Called To The Bar ships in from France and is 4/4 ITM on the turf. He has been away from the races for 46 days and the son of Henrythenavigator. He has won at this distance for rider Maxime Guyon at Chantilly.
