Race #9 – The G1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt – 6f – 5:44 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #2 – Strike Power / #1 – Mitole / #4 – Firenze Fire

#2 Strike Power comes from the barn of Mark Hennig with John Velasquez in the saddle. Been away from the races for 50 days and two for two ITM this year. Cutting back in distance today and that could play right into his plans. He is a son of Speightstown who has plenty of speed. Johnny V wins 26% with early runners so he fits this one perfectly. #1 Mitole is a son of Eskendreya for trainer Steve Asmussen and Ricardo Santana. They are seeking their 8th straight win and he is a perfect 4 for 4 this year. Cutting back from the 1 mile distance winning the G1 Met at Belmont. Santana wins 20% with early speedrunners and 49% ITM teaming up with Asmussen. This is the best sprinter/miler in the country and clearly the one to beat. #4 Firenze Fire hails from the Jason Servis barn with Irad Ortiz in the saddle. He is 2 for 3 ITM at the Spa and been off for 49 days. He is 4 for 4 ITM sprinting and cuts back from the one mile G1 Met. He’s a closer and Ortiz wins 22% with late runners.

Race #10 – The G2 Bowling Green – 1 3/8 on the turf – 6:18 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #3 – Ya Primo / #12 – Focus Group / #1 – Arklow

#3 Ya Primo is a son of Mastercraftsman (IRE) for Chad Brown with Jose Ortiz aboard. He’s been off four months after winning the Gr1 Latinoamericano in his native country. The Chilean-bred is 6 for 9 ITM on the turf and working well over the Saratoga surface. First time in the states where Brown wins 21% with fresh faces to his barn. He is bred to relish the green and Jose Ortiz wins 25% with Team Brown. #12 Focus Group is a son of Kitten’s Joy for Chad Brown with Irad Ortiz in the driver’s seat. He loves Saratoga going 4 for 5 ITM over the greensward. He’s a deep closer and that fits Irad Ortiz where he wins 21% with late runners. His last race was the G1 United Nations showing great promise. #1 Arklow is a son of Arch for trainer Brad Cox with Florent Geroux in the saddle. Been off for 50 days and was a beaten favorite in the G2 Belmont Gold Cup. Cuts back from two miles and should come flying late in the lane. Geroux wins 30% with Brad Cox and wins 20% with his turf mounts.

Race #11 – The G2 Jim Dandy – 1 1/8 – 6:51 pm EDT

BetPTC.com Selections / #5 – Tacitus / #6 – War of Will / #2 – Tax

#5 Tacitus is a son of Tapit for trainer Bill Mott and Jose Ortiz. Beaten favorite in the Belmont and is a very strong closer. He is lightly raced coming off a 49 day vacation. He cuts back in distance and Ortiz fits like a glove. #6 War of Will is a son of War Front for Mark Casse and Tyler Gaffalione. Casse is winning 21% at the meet and they’ve been off for 49 days. He takes a drop in class and Gaffalione fits well as he has four wins this year. Tyler G should get a perfect stalking trip in this compact field of six. #2 Tax is a son of Arch for Danny Gargan. Irad Ortiz has the call and he’ll press the early pace or take over and lead the pack. He exits the G1 Belmont as well and owns a bullet work to prepare for this event. He is 5 for 7 lifetime and Gargan is winning 27% at the meet.

Del Mar

Race #8 – The G1 Bing Crosby – 6f – 8:30 pm EDT

BetPTC.com / #3- Cistron / #7 – Recruiting Ready / #8 – Jalen Journey

#3 Cistron comes from the John Sadler barn for Hronis Racing. Victor Espinoza has the mount and this was a speedy turf horse until he tried the grass. Once hitting the new surface he ran even better. He cuts back from 7f and has blistering speed. Been off 2 months and sports a bullet work coming into the race. Look for a top notch effort. #7 Recruiting Ready hails from the Stanley Hough barn with Flavien Prat in the saddle. They’ve been off 50 days and this stalker should be right on the heels of Cistron. Add in a bullet work and Hough may add to his 24% clip for the year. #8 Jalen Journey is a son of With Distinction for trainer Peter Miller who is winning 38% at the meet. 3rd off the layoff and ships in from GP. He has strong early speed and steps up in class under the guidance of Mike Smith where he wins with 39% of his sprinters.

BetPTC.com Selections / #7 – Maximum Security / #5 – Mucho Gusto /#1  King for a Day

#7 Maximum Security hails from the Jason Servis barn who is winning at 29% at the meet. Luis Saez in the saddle and after the Derby DQ he had a nice prep in the Pegasus over the track and should be knocking heads on the lead. Look for a big effort today. #5 Mucho Gusto son of Mucho Macho Man for Bob Baffert who has won eight runnings of this race. He is 3rd off the layoff and 7 for 7 ITM lifetime. There is plenty of speed and Joe Talamo should be able to lay just off the main speed waiting to push the button. #1 King for a Day comes from the Todd Pletcher barn with John Velasquez in the irons. This son of Uncle Mo is making a 3rd off move and the barn scores at a 22% clip. The rail has been winning at a 24% clip and owns a sharp work coming into the race.

Del Mar

Race #4  – The G2 San Diego  1 1/16  6:30 pm EDT

#1 Catalina Cruiser is a son of Union Rags for John Sadler with Joel Rosario in the driver’s seat. 2nd off the layoff and the barn wins 16% on this move. He is a solid stalker with sparkling works. He’ll be closer to the pace today and give them plenty of trouble down the lane. #2 Core Beliefs hails from the Peter Eurton barn with Flavien Prat in the saddle. Blinkers on and has been off for 54 days. He’s a nice stalker who is dropping down a notch in from the G1 Gold Cup and cuts back to a kinder distance. #4 Draft Pick comes from the Peter Eurton barn with this son of Candy Ride. Martin Garcia in the irons and makes his 2nd start of the year. His work tabs look like he’s gearing up for a top effort.

#3 Mucho Unusual is a daughter of Mucho Macho Man for Tim Yakteen. Joel Rosario in the saddle making a 2nd off the layoff move where the barn wins 14%. This California bred should relish all of the speed to set up a good stalking trip. The faster they go the better she’ll like it. #5 Apache Princess comes in for Keith Desormeaux with brother Kent Desormeaux in the saddle. They’ve been off two months shipping in from Golden Gate. Kent D rolled off three straight going 6 1/2f on the weeds and they usually take to the mile distance with gusto. Look for her late in the game. #8 Stillwater Cove rolls in from the Wesley Ward barn with a daughter of Quality Road. Victor Espinoza in the irons and he wins 24% on the turf. The barn has been winning 26% for the year.

BetPTC.com – Horses to Watch – Ed Meyer

The winter ovals are opening the doors and we’re ready to follow the horses as they make their next stop. But as we ready for the next oval, we need to keep our eyes open for problem runners who have an excuse. They may not have had a good break, stumbled or blocked down the lane. As handicappers, we are always looking to build our bankroll and there is no better time than now. – Just keep your eyes peeled and have these runners on your radar. – Best of luck from your friends at BetPTC.com!

Churchill Downs

11/18/17

Race #4 – #9 – Sky Promise – 1 1/16 on the turf

#9 – Sky Promise = Son of Sky Mesa for the Ken McPeek barn. He was adding first-time blinkers and had the services of Robby Albarado. The track was listed as yielding and he seems to enjoy a surface with a little “cut” to it. This day he was tracking from the back and made a strong 4 wide bid to get the show dough.

Race #7 – #2 – Like a Haint – 6f on the main

#2 – Like a Haint = Filly by Archarcharch is fresh off two straight claims and was a beaten favorite the last two. She loves CD going 5/6 ITM. She had the services of apprentice Edgar Morales and was rallying strongly on the outside. The leader and eventual winner floated out a little bit near the wire and won by a head. Some would call it race riding and others would dismiss it as a bad streak of luck. – You’ll need to follow her back as she’ll probably head to Turfway Park.

Fair Grounds

11/18/17

Race #2 – #9 – Much Trouble – 1 and 70 yards on the main

#9 -Much Trouble = Miguel Mena in the saddle for Thom Amoss. Shipping in from Indiana Grand and was a beaten favorite last out. He owned a bullet work over the course and looked to fit. He was carried out at the 3/4 and forced to check up sharply at the 1/8th pole. After all this, he still managed a strong place finish.

Del Mar

11/19/17

Race #7 – #10- Pants on Fire – 1 mile on the turf

#10 – Pants on Fire = Corey Nakatani in the irons for Richard Baltas.  3-yr-old filly by Sir Percy (GB) is regally bred for the green. She came flying and would have taken flight if she had wings. The way she maneuvered through runners and weaved in and out closing like gangbusters. – Follow her right back.

Race #8 – #2 – Solid Wager – $100k Cary Grant – 7f on the main

#2 – Solid Wager = Peter Miller is the conditioner and he has been red-hot winning 33%. He was a beaten favorite last out and was left at the post this day. – Victor Espinoza saved ground and swung out gamely making a strong 5 wide move. Everything seemed to fit and he’ll give them fits next time out.

As the New Year is just days away we start scratching our heads to find new resolutions. Horse Players are most definitely on this bus, and we tend to dig really deep at times when the answers may have been insight the entire time. – Work on money management; narrow your focus of the tracks you follow, or target your best ten races on any given day and wager on five. – It has always been the little things, and sometimes we miss the forest for the trees. Here’s a little something to whet your whistle for 2016, and hopefully get you started on a positive note.  From your friends at BetPTC.com, have a safe and Happy New Year ! – There’s only 131 days until the Kentucky Derby.

Gulfstream Park – 12/26/15 – Race #7 – #6 – 5f on the turf

#6 – Try Your Luck = Jeffrey Sanchez aboard this daughter of Looking at Lucky, and this two-year-old showed a great deal a promise first time to the races. She settled in nicely and tipped off to make her move. She ran a very game 3rd place effort and appeared to have plenty more in the tank.

Gulfstream Park – 12/26/15 – Race #8 – #2 – One mile on the dirt

#2 – Wheels up Now = Luis Saez had the call for Thom Albertrani, and this colt ran a big effort. He was trying 2nd time Lasix, first time blinkers, and was bested by an impressive colt by Uncle Mo. He set the pace going 44.3 and 109.3 in the middle stages, and for a baby that is moving and shaking. Next out should be a “flag fall to that’s all” move to put the field to sleep from the gate break.

Gulfstream Park – 12/26/15 – Race #11 – #7 – 1 1/2 on the turf

#7 – Rosalind = Edgard Zayas in the irons for Chad Brown, and they were beaten by a very talented Goldy Espony ( another Chad Brown runner) who put the field the sleep in this marathon event on the green. – Rosalind was under a snug restraint down the backstretch, and the dawdling fractions may have been her undoing. She tried to produce a rally, but was left in the dust by her impressive stable mate. The race was better than what you’ll see on paper, and hopefully she won’t hook “Goldy” next out.

Santa Anita – 12/26/15 – Race #6 – #6 – One mile on the turf

#6 – Mister Brightside = Mike Smith was the reinsman and this guy has been a handful his last two outings. – Hopping at the start two races back, and steadying multiple times in his next to last effort. Having Smith aboard was the move, and he can get them to settle better than most in the game. – Smith had a “Full-Nelson hammerlock” on his mount as he had to take up just a bit around the first turn and allowed his mount to run freely before the 1/2. – I watched and wondered, but it would be a fools folly to second guess Smith. He knew his mount was acting up, and allowed a quick blast of energy hoping to settle his mount. – He came three wide into the final turn for clear sailing but ran out of gas. I think this will be a very nice play back, and you can expect a sweet price. Once Patrick Gallagher figures out this fella, you’ll get a handsome price at the windows.

Santa Anita – 12/27/15 – Race #4 – #2 – 1 1/16 on the dirt

#2 – Hoffenheim = Victor Espinoza had the call for Bob Baffert and ran what I like to call a ” winner’s race and not getting your picture taken.” – In tight at the start, and settled out nicely. Moved into position to out the field away and tipped off the rail four wide to find his best stride. He drew off by 1/2 at the 111.2 make, and was bested by late closing French Getaway under Kent Desormeaux. – He’ll grow from this effort and you should look very closely for his next out effort.
