by: Ed Meyer

Race #5 – The G1 Forego – 7f – 1:55 pm Analysis / #3 – Jackie’s Warrior / #1 – Baby Yoda / #5 – Cody’s Wish

#3 Jackie’s Warrior is a speedy son of Maclean’s Music going for his fifth straight win for Steve Asmussen. This is his 2nd off the layoff after winning the G1 Vanderbilt impressively. He is 5 for 5 at The Spa and sports a wicked turn of early speed. Joel Rosario has the call and is 4 for 4 ITM going 7 panels. The one to beat. #1 Baby Yoda is a stalker for Bill Mott who is a perfect 3 straight over the Saratoga oval. He draws the rail and Jose Ortiz and should be ready to wait for a garden trip. The bullet work shows me signs of readiness and he looms the major danger. #5 Cody’s Wish is a stout closer for Bill Mott with Junior Alvarado in the saddle. He is a neck short of shooting for his 6th straight win and steps up the class ladder today to try his hand at the next level. He has looked solid and can be a player in your exotics.

Race #8 – The G1 Allen Jerkins – 7f – 3:52 pm Analysis / #6 – Jack Christopher / #8 – Gunite / #9 – Accretive

#6 Jack Christopher hails from the Chad Brown barn with Jose Ortiz in the irons. He was perfect heading into the G1 Haskell where he came up a bit short. They cut back to 7f, and this should allow the son of Munnings to stalk just off the lead and takeover when ready. Ortiz fits him well and should get his best with a more friendly distance. #8 Gunite is a stalker for Steve Asmussen and Tyler Gaffalione. This son of Gun Runner is 3 for 3 ITM over the track and Tyler G is the perfect fit. Gaffalione wins 26% with Asmussen and will give it a good try against this group. #9 Accretive is a closer for Chad Brown and Irad Ortiz. Lightly raced and only two trips to the races resulting in a maiden win and neck loss in the G2 Amsterdam. Irad is one of the best closing riders in the country and scores at a 28% clip with Brown. This son of Practical Joke is going to be running late and could upset the apple cart.

Race #9 – The G1 Personal Ensign – 1 1/8 miles dirt – 4:32 pm Analysis / #3 – Clairiere / #2 – Search Results / #5 – Malathaat

#3 Clairiere is third off the shelf and 3 for 3 ITM at the Spa for Steve Asmussen and Joel Rosario. She is a daughter of Curlin and can put together a string late kick down the lane. Rosario is winning 21% at the meet and fits perfectly for her running style. #2 Search Results is a stalker for Chad Brown and Flavien Prat. Prat rises to the occasion on the marquee days and had a great prep win in the G3 Molly Pitcher. She drops Lasix and has to bring her top game to seal the deal today. #5 Malathaat is a closing daughter of Curlin for Todd Pletcher and John Velasquez. 3rd off the layoff and loves Saratoga. She can come rolling late but will need a very solid pace. She is 5 for 5 ITM at the distance.

Race #10 – The G1 Sword Dancer – 1 1/2 on the turf – 5:05 pm Analysis / #6 – Gufo / #8 – Soldier Rising / #3 – Broome

#6 Gufo is a late runner for Christophe Clement and Joel Rosario. He is 2 for 2 ITM over the course and G1 United Nations was the perfect prep and gets blinkers back today. The sharp work has me thinking they may have just what the Dr. ordered and have him ready for a top effort today. He is a turf monster who should relish the distance. #8 Soldier Rising hails from the Clement barn as well with Jose Ortiz in the saddle. This son of Frankel (GB) loves the greensward and can come calling late in the lane. #3 Boome goes to post for Aiden O’Brien and Ryan Moore today. He has been knocking heads with the Euros and was just beat in the BC Turf at Del Mar in 2021. Ryan Moore making the trip has me interested in keeping him in my wagers.

Race #11 – The G1 Travers – 1 1/4 miles dirt- 5:44 pm Analysis / #8 – Zandon / #6 – Epicenter / #1 – Cyberknife

#8 Zandon hails from a leading barn with Flavien Prat getting the call. 2nd time off the layoff where the barn wins 29%. He is 6 for 6 lifetime ITM and looks to be ready for a late summer campaign. Part wins 27% with Chad Brown and will launch a late bid ready to steal the show. #6 Epicenter won the G1 Jim Dandy last out for Steve Asmussen and Joel Rosario. He is perfect at Saratoga and has not run a bad race leading up to the Derby and after. He’ll be a little closer to the pace and look for a tactical move from Rosario. He has traded some punches with Zandon, and I look for more of the same today. #1 Cyberknife gets the rail draw for Brad Cox and Florent Geroux. Since the Derby he is a perfect 2 for 2 and ready to take his game higher. This son of Gun Runner has tactical closing ability and can be upset minded.
