Silver Max holds off Wise Dan to win the Shadwell

After a deluge of rain washed the Shadwell Turf off of the turf, Silver Max went all the way to win the $750,000 event on Saturday.  Sent off as the 7/1 second choice, Silver Max (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) and Robbie Albarado went out to dictate terms early on as Wise Dan secured a mid-pack stalking position.  The Polytrack was soaked with standing water as Silver Max set very quick fractions.  Wise Dan (BetPTC.com Top Selection) moved up to second on the far turn and looked like he was poised to make his challenge on the far turn.  But Silver Max kept on finding more on the lead and held on to win by a length and a quarter over Wise Dan.  Willcox Inn (BetPTC.com 3rd Selection) ran on to finish third and complete a trifecta worth $278.

We Miss Artie closed from far back early on to win the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity.  We Miss Artie was 9th in the early going as Solitary Ranger went out to set the fractions.  But none of the early pacesetters were around late as We Miss Artie closed in for the win, while long shots Smarty’s Echo and Arctic Slope ran on to run second and third.  Better Lucky (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) won a hard fought battle on the grass in the First Lady Stakes, holding off a very tough favorite in Dayatthespa.  Better Lucky got a nice trip as Daisy Devine (BetPTC.com 3rd Selection) went out and set a strong pace over the yielding surface.  Better Lucky and Julien Leparoux made their move on the final turn and catapulted to the lead, holding off Dayatthespa who ran well down the stretch to finish second.

Judy The Beauty (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) was able to pull off a huge upset, besting Gypsy Robin (BetPTC.com Longshot) and more importantly Groupie Doll (BetPTC.com Top Selection) in the TCA Stakes.  Judy The Beauty was 3/1 on the board and sat far back as Gypsy Robin set the pace.  Groupie Doll made her move on the outside and Judy the Beauty hooked right onto her hip.  Judy The Beauty had much more left down the lane though than did the favorite and pulled clear to win by a length.  Havelock used a patented Garrett Gomez off the pace ride to get a win in the Woodford Stakes.  And on Friday it was My Conquestadory (BetPTC.com Top Selection) who made an eye-catching move to win the Alcibiades Stakes over Rosalind (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) who ran second.

Power Broker wins a sloppy Indiana Derby

Keeneland wasn’t the only track getting rained on Saturday afternoon.  Indiana Downs was soaked, but that didn’t stop Power Broker from scoring a big win in the Grade 2 Indiana Derby.  Sent off as the 8/5 favorite in the field of twelve, Power Broker found himself in fourth early on, stalking Ruler of Love and Calvin Borel who went out to set the early tempo.  Bradester (BetPTC.com Top Selection) made his move after the lead turning for home, but that lead was short lived as Power Broker blew by in the final furlong and edged clear to win by almost two lengths.  Bradester finished up in second while Holy Lute (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) finished up in third.

Pure Fun showed that the layoff was no problem for her as she splashed home to a victory in the Indiana Oaks.  Making her first start since the Kentucky Oaks, Pure Fun and Victor Lebron were last early on as favored Fiftyshadesofhay (BetPTC.com Top Selection) went out and grabbed the early lead.  Pure Fun was last early on, but got rolling on that final turn and cruised by late to win going away by almost two lengths.  Long shot Oscar Party (BetPTC.com Longhshot) finished second, while Fiftyshadesofhay held on for third.

Points Offthebench gets another Grade 1 at Santa Anita

Points Offthebench is quickly becoming one of the top sprinters in the country, and he added the Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship to his resume on Saturday.  Sent off at odds of 9/2, Points Offthebench (BetPTC.com 3rd Selection) sat back in mid-pack early on as Distinctiv Passion went out and opened up a big lead early and setting a wicked fast pace in the process.  Distinctiv Passion turned for home in front, but Points Offthebench and Mike Smith came roaring home on the outside and grabbed the lead inside the furlong pole. Goldencents (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) put in a big rally on the outside, but fell a half length short in finishing second.

In the City of Hope Mile it was No Jet Lag (BetPTC.com Longshot) who got up to win at 13/1.  Favored Obviously (BetPTC.com Top Selection) grabbed the lead turning for home, but the effects of being up close to a hot pace finally caught up with him as No Jet Lag blew on by.  He Be Fire N Ice finished second with Barocci (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) finishing third at 13/1.

Kid Dreams dominates the Hawthorne Derby

Kid Dreams and Francisco Torres blew away their rivals on Saturday under the lights at Hawthorne as they won the Hawthorne Derby by almost eight lengths.  Breaking from the rail and sent off at odds of 9/2, Kid Dreams settled in fifth early on as Mongolian Saturday and Five Iron (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) went out and traded punches on the front end.  Kid Dreams was angled out by Torres turning for home and they burst away from their competition and winning with easy.  Charming Kitten (BetPTC.com Top Selection) finished up in second while Five Iron (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) rounded out the trifecta.
