Weekend Recap 8/11

Dice Flavor flies late to get the La Jolla at Del Mar

Dice Flavor needed every inch of the mile and one sixteenth on Saturday in the La Jolla at Del Mar.  Sent off at odds of 8/1, Dice Flavor and Garrett Gomez found themselves back in eighth early on as Rosengold and Den’s Legacy went out and set a very strong pace of 22.99 and 45.81 for the opening quarter and half.  Den’s Legacy took over as the field came into the stretch and looked to be clear at the sixteenth pole, but Dice Flavor and Garrett Gomez shook loose to the outside and came roaring in the final strides, getting up to win by half a length.  Den’s Legacy held onto the second spot while Pure Loyalty got up for third.  All of the top three finishers came in at 8/1 which led to a trifecta of $609.

Devious Intent pulls off a shocker in the Gardenia

Groupie Doll received all the accolades coming into the Grade 3 Gardenia and rightly so, but after the one mile race it was Devious Intent who got the money.  Magic Hour (BetPTC.com Longshot) went out to take the lead early, while Devious Intent (BetPTC.com 3rd Selection) stayed right to her outside, just a half length back for much of the journey.  Groupie Doll (BetPTC.com Top Selection) found herself in seventh early on and made a steady move into contention as the field ran on the wide sweeping far turn at Ellis Park.  Groupie Doll moved up to join the top two at the top of the lane, but both Magic Hour and Devious Intent just kept on finding more and kept Groupie Doll at bay.  In the final hundred yards it became clear Groupie Doll wasn’t going to get it done.  Devious Intent finally pushed ahead of Magic Hour late to get up and win by a neck.  They were three quarters of a length ahead of Groupie Doll who ran third.  The BetPTC.com exacta paid $334 for every $2 and a box of our selections in the trifecta yielded a $758 return for every $1.

Brethren takes home the Evangeline Mile

Brethren sat a great trip on Saturday night and used that trip to take home a win in the $125,000 Evangline Mile.  Sent off at odds of 9/1, Brethren sat in second early on as fellow 9/1 shot Unitas went out and set the pace early on.  Brethren took over as the field ran to the quarter pole and never looked back down the home stretch, opening up to win by three and a quarter lengths.  Long shot Alabama Martini (BetPTC.com Longshot) closed up from last to finish in second, ahead of heavily favored Sabercat (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) who ran third but never really threatened.

Skylander Girl rolls to the Ontario Debutante win at Woodbine

Skylander Girl came into the Ontario Debutante as the lone stakes winner in the field, and she left with the same credentials as she won the $125,000 stakes event.  Sent off as the 2/1 second choice in the field of five, Skylander Girl (BetPTC.com 2nd Selection) sat in second as heavily favored Conquest Whiplash went out and set the early fractions.  Conquest Whiplash kept the lead into the stretch, but James McAleney put Skylander Girl in position and she rolled by to grab the lead and pulled away in the final furlong to win by two and a half lengths.  Sweetsoutherndame (BetPTC.com Longshot) got up to run second over Madly Truly (BetPTC.com Top Selection) who finished third, completing a BetPTC.com Trifecta worth $137.60 for a $2 ticket.
